Vastus is an unincorporated community in southern Butler County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. [1]

Contents

The community is on Missouri Route H. Neelyville is five miles to the west, the Black River flows past 3.5 miles to the east, and the Missouri-Arkansas border is 3.5 miles to the south. [2]

History

A post office called Vastus was established in 1891 and remained in operation until 1927. [3] Vastus is a name derived from Latin, signifying "great". [4]

Climate

The climate in this area is characterized by hot, humid summers and generally mild to cool winters. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Vastus has a humid subtropical climate, abbreviated "Cfa" on climate maps. [5]

It sits on the east margin of the Black River floodplain at an elevation of 361 feet. The community of Wilby lies three miles to the north-northwest along the Black River. The Missouri Pacific Railway passes the east side of the community along the margin of the Black River floodplain. The small Lake Locloma lies just to the west of the Black River along Route W.

Keeners is an unincorporated community in northern Butler County, in the U.S. state of Missouri. U.S. Route 67 passes approximately 1.5 mile to the southeast. The Missouri Pacific Railway passes the west side of the community along the Black River floodplain.
