Vikram Deb University (Formerly 'Vikram Deb Autonomous College' & 'Jeypore College') is an autonomous college of Berhampur University in India, located in the city of Jeypore, Koraput district in Odisha, that offers courses primarily at the higher secondary, undergraduate and postgraduate levels. It was established in 1947 by Maharaja of Jeypore Sri Vikram Dev IV or Vikram Deo Verma [1] [2] and has been named in his respect.

Foundation

As a part of welfare activities of the British-Indian government, in 1 July 1947 the government of Jeypore Estate (Orissa Province) under Maharaja Vikram Deo Verma started this institution of higher education at Jeypore as 'Jeypore College'. As a tribute to his philanthrophy the college was renamed to 'Vikram Deb College' in 1961. The college was also upgraded to a first grade college from 1961 and undergraduate courses were started. Honours teaching provisions were made in 1968–73 and Post Graduate courses were started from 1979. The college was declared a lead college in 1991–92.

Present

The courses at the higher secondary level are affiliated to CHSE Board of Odisha and the courses at the undergraduate and the postgraduate level are offered in affiliation with Berhampur University, Berhampur, Odisha. It got its autonomous institution status in 2004. It is recognised by the University Grant Commission (UGC) of India and enjoys the status of a B++ Grade college as assessed by the NAAC. Notable Alumni and Students of Vikram Deb College are also called as 'Vikramites'.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vikram Deo Verma</span> 25th Maharajah of Jeypore

Maharajah Vikram Dev IV or Vikram Deo Varma was the 25th king of the Suryavansh dynasty that ruled over Kalinga and later Jeypore Samasthanam under the British. A patron of the arts and literature, he was also a writer and playwright himself. He was also an administrator, a magistrate for Visakhapatnam by the Madras government in 1914 and involved in the delineation of the state of Odisha.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Jeypore Estate</span> Kingdom of the Kalinga region of India

Jeypore Estate or Jeypore Zamindari was a Zamindari estate of the Madras Presidency in British India. Historically it was a kingdom known as Jeypore Kingdom, located in the highlands of the western interiors of the Kalinga region that existed from the mid-15th century to 1777 CE as a tributary state of the Gajapati Empire and following its decline retained various degrees of semi-independence until it became a vassal state of the British. It eventually formed a part of the linguistic Orissa Province in 1936 upon transfer from the Madras Province and became a part of the independent Union of India in 1947.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Maharaja of Jeypore</span>

Maharaja of Jeypore was the principal title used by the rulers of the Kingdom of Jeypore until its dissolution in 1947. It was also used by the titular rulers until the removal of titles and privileges of all princely states and estates by the 26th amendment of the Constitution of India. However, due to the significance given to the traditional and religious role of a king, evidently, Vishweshwar Dev in 2013 became the Maharaja of Jeypore in pretense.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Vikram Dev</span> 19th maharajah of Jeypore, India

Maharajah Vikram Dev I or Vikram Dev was the king of Jeypore kingdom from 1758 to 1781. He was born in the Suryavansh Shankara Dynasty that ruled the region since 1443. He succeeded his brother Maharaja Lal Krishna Dev in a military coup in what is described as a critical period when the kingdom was under attack from all directions. The king battled and protected his kingdom from the French East India Company in Malkangiri, Marathas in Umerkote belt and the East India Company - Pusapati alliance in Jeypore and Rayagada. He retransferred the capital from Narayanapatna to Jeypore which had been deserted from the time of Balaram Dev in 1711. In the last years of his reign, the kingdom was demoted to a zamindari after they were defeated by the British. He was the 19th king of the Suryavansh dynasty of Kalinga that previously ruled the kingdom from Nandapur.
