Fakir Mohan University (FM University) is a state university located at Nuapadhi, Balasore, Odisha, India. It is named after Odia writer Fakir Mohan Senapati.

Contents

History

This university was established by the Government of Odisha, under Section 32 of the Odisha Universities Act, 1989 (Act 5 of 1989). It was carved out of the Utkal University in 1999 and acts as an affiliating university.Professor Gorachand Patnaik an eminent educationist of the state and former Principal of Ravenshaw college is the founding Vice Chancellor of the University. FM University has 93 colleges and 15,000 students at the graduate and postgraduate levels. It is the only university in India that offers a postgraduate course in Ballistics.

Campuses

FM University is functioning in two campuses: the old campus at Januganj, besides the National Highway near Remuna Golei (at 21°30′22″N86°53′28″E / 21.50614°N 86.89101°E / 21.50614; 86.89101 , around 3 km (1.9 mi) from Balasore bus stand and railway station) and the new campus at Nuapadhi (at 21°32′38″N86°48′57″E / 21.5440°N 86.81592°E / 21.5440; 86.81592 , around 15 km (9.3 mi) from Balasore bus stand and railway station). In March 2021 Union minister Pratap Chandra Sarangi inaugurated New Marine Bioresource and Biotechnology Centre at University Balasore campus. [2]

FM University affiliates 96 colleges and 14 professional colleges including two autonomous i.e., FM Autonomous College, Bhadrak Autonomous College. Its jurisdiction extends over Balasore and Bhadrak districts. [3]

The university has a computer lab, bioscience (botany & zoology) and biotechnology lab, BIF- computer lab (at Dept. of Biosciences and Biotechnology), environmental science lab and Physics lab.

There is a centralised computer centre, central library with Internet connection (12 hrs open).

Welfare facilities include UCO bank, two ATMs (SBI and UCO), one canteen, a common gym for both boys and girls, a mini indoor stadium, one cricket field, one volley field, one boys hostel, two girls hostel, staff quarters and a guest house.

Arts Degree started in 1966, Commerce in 1978 and Science in 1980.

Fakir Mohan Medical College and Hospital, established in 2018, is a full-fledged tertiary government medical college and hospital. It is located at Balasore, Odisha. This college imparts the degree Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS). The hospital associated with the college is one of the largest hospitals in the Balasore district. The selection to the college is done on the basis of merit through National Eligibility and Entrance Test. Yearly undergraduate student intake is 100 from the year 2018. It is the sixth medical college opened by the Government of Odisha in 2018.FMMCH stands at second position after SCBMCH Cuttack in terms of Patients load and Regarded as Second most big hospital and college in Odisha according to Govt of Odisha( published on news paper). It is one of the preferred medical colleges among the new medical colleges, due to close proximity to the main town.

Madhumita Das is an Indian academic was the vice-chancellor of Fakir Mohan University, Balasore, Odisha, India from 2017 until 2020. She served several important positions in different national and international institutions such as the South Asian Association of Women Geoscientists (SAAWG), International Association for Promoting Geoethics (IAPG), Italy etc.

Balasore Law College commonly known as BLC is a private law institute situated at O.T Road, Balia in Balasore of Balasore district in the Indian state of Odisha. It offers 3 years and 5 years integrated B.A, LL.B. courses approved by the Bar Council of India (BCI) and it is affiliated to Fakir Mohan University.
