Virginia Alice Camealio-Benjamin is a South African politician who has been a Member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature since May 2019. She was a councillor of the Kouga Local Municipality before her election to provincial legislature. Camealio-Benjamin is a member of the African National Congress.

Politics

Camealio-Benjamin is a member of the African National Congress. She served as a councillor of the Kouga Local Municipality. In June 2011, newly elected Kouga mayor Booi Koerat appointed her the member of the mayoral committee for tourism and creative industries. [1] Koerat resigned in 2015 and Daphne Kettledas was elected as his successor. She retained Camealio-Benjamin in her position. [2] She later became chief whip of the ANC caucus. [3]

In the 2016 municipal election, the Democratic Alliance unseated the ANC as the governing party of the municipality. At the inaugural council sitting, the ANC nominated her as their mayoral candidate. She lost to the DA's Elza van Lingen after receiving only 12 votes compared to Van Lingen's 17. [4] Camealio-Benjamin remained ANC chief whip.

Provincial legislature

Camealio-Benjamin was nominated to the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature after the 8 May 2019 provincial election. [5] She was sworn in on 22 May and the ANC appointed her as a whip. On 3 June, she received her committee assignments. [5]

Nolitha Ntobongwana is a South African educator and politician. She currently serves as the chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Infrastructure in the National Assembly. Nokuzola Gladys Tolashe, also known as Sisisi "Sisi" Tolashe, is a South African politician from the Eastern Cape. She was elected as president of the African National Congress (ANC) Women's League in July 2023. In government, Tolashe has been the Deputy Minister in the Presidency for Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities since March 2023.

Zukisa Cheryl Faku is a South African politician and convicted fraudster from the Eastern Cape. A member of the African National Congress, Faku had served as the mayor of the Buffalo City Local Municipality. In 2013 she was elected to take up a seat in the National Council of Provinces. The following year, she was elected to the National Assembly of South Africa. Faku was convicted of fraud in 2016 but remained a Member of Parliament. She resigned from parliament shortly after her re-election in 2019.

Malitaba Sarah Moleleki is a South African politician who has represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the Free State Provincial Legislature since 2014. Before that, she was the Mayor of Maluti-a-Phofung Local Municipality in the Free State until her resignation in September 2013.

Before her election to the provincial legislature, Mabandla was an ANC Youth League activist and a local councillor in Mhlontlo Local Municipality, her hometown.

Comely Humphrey Maqocwa Maxegwana is a South African politician who represented the African National Congress (ANC) in the National Assembly from 2014 until 2019, when he failed to gain re-election. Before that, he represented the ANC in the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature. He was a prominent trade unionist in the Eastern Cape during apartheid and is also a former Provincial Secretary of the ANC's Eastern Cape branch.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Elza van Lingen</span> South African politician (1949–2018)

Elizabeth Christina "Elza" van Lingen was a South African politician. A member of the Democratic Alliance, she was elected a councillor of the Cacadu District Municipality in 2002. She was elected to the National Council of Provinces in 2009. Van Lingen became leader of the DA caucus in the NCOP in 2011, and was re-elected to the NCOP in 2014. From 2016 until her death, she served as the mayor of the Kouga Local Municipality.

Litho Suka is a South African politician and former educator who served as a councillor of Nelson Mandela Bay from 2015 until 2021. He was chief whip of council between 2015 and 2016. Prior to serving in council, Suka was a Permanent Delegate to the National Council of Provinces from 2014 to 2015 and before that, a member of the National Assembly of South Africa from 2009 to 2014. Suka had served as a member of the Eastern Cape Provincial Legislature from 1994 until 2009. He is a member of the African National Congress.
