The company has been through many iterations, declaring bankruptcy more than once, rising to as many as 504 locations in 38 U.S. states in the 1980s and falling to fewer than 20 locations on more than one occasion. As of 2024, Rax is based in Ironton, Ohio, and has only six franchisee-owned restaurants still in operation.
Grimaldi's Pizzeria is an American pizzeria chain from the New York City area with over 40 restaurants throughout the United States. Its most famous restaurant is under the Brooklyn Bridge in Brooklyn at 1 Front Street, next door to its original location. Zagat Survey rated Grimaldi's the No. 1 Pizzeria in New York in 2007. With a carry-out and delivery service model in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, in 2022 it had 43 restaurants in operation overall. It does not sell slices, only whole pies, which are cooked by coal-fired brick ovens. It also sells wines and appetizers, as well as calzones. Among desserts are cannoli and tiramisu, as well as New York–style cheesecake.

The chain has also expanded to offer catering and ship frozen pizzas in the United States.
Four Star Pizza is a fast food pizza company which operates throughout Ireland. It originated in Washington, Pennsylvania, US, in 1981 by Alan and Susan Cottrill, who previously operated Domino's Pizza stores in Ohio. Besides sharing the English language, Alan Cottrill sensed a market for American style delivery pizza, and traveled to Ireland in 1986 to launch the chain in Dublin. The first outlet in Ireland opened in 1986.

Winky's Hamburgers was a chain of hamburger fast food restaurants in and near Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was founded by two brothers, Harold and Bernard Erenstein in 1962. Their slogans were "Fast Food Cheap" and "Winky's Makes You Happy To be Hungry." Their signs advertised "Winky's Hamburger 15¢"; other sandwiches offered were The Big Wink, The Great One, and The Ground Rounder. Hot dogs also were on the menu. One of the television commercials for the chain featured a puppet monster reading a list of signs featuring the names of the towns where restaurants were located. Upon learning that there was no Winky's in Wilmerding, the monster ate the panel, exclaiming, "There's no Winky's in Wilmerding!"
Smokin' Joe's is an Indian chain of pizzerias headquartered in Mumbai, India. It was founded in 1993 by Parsi entrepreneurs. Smokin' Joe's currently operates in number of cities in India. It has 58 stores throughout India.
The presence of pizza restaurant chains has contributed to a significant increase in pizza consumption in Mainland China and Hong Kong. This also had an effect of introducing cheese as a culinary ingredient and everyday food in China, which was relatively uncommon in Chinese cuisine prior to the emergence of pizza chains. Pizza Hut opened its first store in China in 1990, and several pizza restaurant chains exist in China today.
