Vusumuzi Robert Shongwe (born 22 April 1958) is a South African politician who is currently serving in the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature. He formerly served in the Executive Council in Mpumalanga province. Between September and November 2015, Shongwe served as acting Premier of Mpumalanga while Premier David Mabuza was on sick leave. He is a member of the African National Congress and was formerly treasurer of the party's provincial executive committee in Mpumalanga, previously the chairperson of the ANC in the Gert Sibande region.
Vusumuzi Robert Shongwe was born on 22 April 1958[ citation needed ] in Breyten near Ermelo in what is now Mpumalanga province. [1]
In the 2014 South African general election, Shongwe was elected as a member of the Mpumalanga provincial legislature for the African National Congress (ANC). [2] He was appointed Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety, Security and Liaison in the province, [3] in which capacity he was the political head of the provincial security structure. [4] [5] [6] [7] While he was in this role, David Mabuza took extended sick leave and Shongwe was appointed acting Premier of Mpumalanga in his stead between September and November 2015. [3] [8] [9]
After the 2016 local government elections, Mabuza reshuffled his cabinet and appointed Shongwe his MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs. [10] He also became Leader of Government Business in the Mpumalanga legislature under Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane. [11] In February 2020, Premier Mtsweni-Tsipane assigned him to meet with Russia's Sverdlovsk region minister of international and foreign economic affairs, Visiliy Kozlov, for bilateral talks held in Mbombela. [11]
In April 2020, Shongwe called on families and municipalities in Mpumalanga to consider starting vegetable gardens in response to the COVID-19 outbreak in South Africa, as an alternative to receiving food donations. [12]
On 24 February 2021, Shongwe returned to his old portfolio as MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison. [13] Shongwe was not included in newly elected premier Mandla Ndlovu's Executive Council following the 2024 election. [14]
In December 2015, Shongwe was elected the provincial treasurer of the ANC in Mpumalanga during an elective congress that also elected Mabuza for a third term as ANC provincial chairperson. [15] [16] Before that, Shongwe had served as regional chairperson of the ANC in the party's large Gert Sibande region. [17]
Shongwe lives in Ermelo in Gert Sibande District Municipality. He is married to Charmaine Zwane and they have three children. [18] Their third child, Sethu Thandiswa, died on 15 April 2015 at the age of eight when she was hit by a speeding car while crossing a street. [19] [20]
Refilwe Maria Tsipane, known as Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane, is a South African politician and a party member of the African National Congress (ANC), who has served as the 7th Chairperson of the National Council of Provinces since 2024. Prior to serving in parliament, she served as the 5th Premier of Mpumalanga between 2018 and 2024. She succeeded former Premier David Mabuza after he was appointed Deputy President of South Africa. Mtsweni-Tsipane was also a Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature and previously served as the MEC for Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs.
Busisiwe Paulina "Busi" Shiba is a South African politician who was the Mpumalanga MEC for Agriculture, Rural Development, Land and Environmental Affairs from 2022 to 2024. She previously served as the Mpumalanga MEC for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs from 2021 to 2022, as the Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature from 2019 to 2021 and as the MEC for Social Development from 2016 to 2019. Shiba is a member of the African National Congress (ANC).
Leonah Lindiwe Ntshalintshali is a South African politician who has been Deputy Minister of Correctional Services and a member of the National Assembly of South Africa since 2024, representing the African National Congress. She was previously Mpumalanga's Member of the Executive Council for Arts, Sports, Culture and Recreation from 2019 to 2021 before serving as the MEC for Social Development from 2021 until 2024. Ntshalintshali was Mayor of Witbank's Emalahleni Local Municipality from 2015 to 2018.
Tsietsi Peter Nyoni is a South African politician and a member of the African National Congress (ANC) who currently serves as the Deputy Director-General for the Mpumalanga Provincial Government. He previously served as one of the executive directors for the Mpumalanga Human Settlements Department until he was removed in 2013 from the position by then Premier David Mabuza. He was appointed to head the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs in the province in August 2016 until February 2020 when current Premier Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane made him the provincial government's Deputy Director-General.
Sasekani Janet Manzini is a South African politician who currently serves as the MEC for Health in the Mpumalanga provincial government, appointed in July 2018 as well as the Provincial spokesperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Mpumalanga. She was elected to serve on the ANC's provincial executive committee (PEC) in December 2015 from the position of provincial African National Congress Youth League (ANCYL) secretary. Manzini served as the MEC for the provincial Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport from August 2016 to July 2018. She has been a member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature since February 2016.
Gillion Pudumo Mashego is a South African politician who served as the Mpumalanga MEC for Public Works, Roads and Transport from July 2018 until February 2021. He has been a Member of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature for the African National Congress since May 2014. He was the provincial Health MEC from May 2014 until July 2018.
Petrus Simon "Pat" Ngomane is a South African politician. A member of the African National Congress, he was elected to the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature in May 2014. He served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for Community Safety, Security and Liaison from August 2016 until May 2019, when he was appointed MEC for Finance, Economic Development and Tourism. Ngomane served in the position until an executive council reshuffle in February 2021.
Mohita Latchminarain is a South African politician from Mpumalanga who served as the Member of the Executive Council (MEC) for the Mpumalanga Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport from February 2021 until October 2022. She formerly served as Speaker of the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature from 2014 until March 2018, when she was first appointed to the Mpumalanga Executive Council as the MEC for Culture, Sport and Recreation. Michael "Ngrayi" Ngwenya is a South African politician from Mpumalanga. He was Regional Chairperson of the African National Congress (ANC) in Ehlanzeni, Mpumalanga from 2011 to 2019, in which capacity he was an influential ally of Premiers David Mabuza and Refilwe Mtsweni-Tsipane. In July 2021, he was suspended from the party for five years because of his role in organising a political rally in support of former President Jacob Zuma. Nicknamed 'Lomdzala', Ngwenya joined the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in June 2023. Immediately after Joining EFF, the ANC offices in Drikoppies, Mpumalanga rebranded from the traditional ANC colours to EFF colours and logo.He has successfully established eff at Nkomzazi changing the minds of old people whom were captured by the Corrupt ANC. Ngrayi Ngwenya is currently a fighter until God remembers him.
