History

106.3 WDFL-FM

On November 16, 1987, the station signed on as WDFL-FM, simulcasting the country format of sister station AM 1240 WDFL (now WZCC). [3] It broadcast from the WDFL tower in Cross City, owned by Women in Florida Broadcasting, Inc. WDFL-FM was a Class A FM station with 3,000 watts of power carrying a satellite-fed country music format on 106.3 MHz.

Simulcast is the broadcasting of programs or events across more than one medium, or more than one service on the same medium, at exactly the same time. For example, Absolute Radio is simulcast on both AM and on satellite radio. Likewise, the BBC's Prom concerts were formerly simulcast on both BBC Radio 3 and BBC Television. Another application is the transmission of the original-language soundtrack of movies or TV series over local or Internet radio, with the television broadcast having been dubbed into a local language.

In broadcasting, sister stations or sister channels are radio or television stations operated by the same company, either by direct ownership or through a management agreement.

WZCC is a commercial classic country radio station in Cross City, Florida, broadcasting to the Tri-County area of Dixie, Levy, and Gilchrist counties on 1240 AM.

Move to 106.9

In 1998, Women in Florida Broadcasting received approval from the Federal Communications Commission to upgrade the signal to a C1, with 4,500 watts, and move it to its current transmitter site, about two miles west of Trenton, Florida. The signal upgrade required WDFL-FM to change its frequency to 106.9 MHz to avoid conflicts with WGUL-FM 106.3 in Beverly Hills, Florida (now WGHR in Spring Hill, Florida).

Federal Communications Commission Independent agency of the U.S. Government

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent agency of the United States government created by statute to regulate interstate communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable. The FCC maintains jurisdiction over the areas of broadband access, fair competition, radio frequency use, media responsibility, public safety, and homeland security.

WGHR (FM)

WGHR is a radio station broadcasting Westwood One's Good Time Oldies format. Licensed to Spring Hill, Florida, United States, it serves the northern Tampa Bay area, including Hernando and Citrus Counties. The station is currently owned by WGUL-FM, Inc..

In 2000, WDFL-FM became WKZY ("Cozy") and its format changed to Adult Standards, fed via satellite from Westwood One's America's Best Music Network (then known as "AM Only").

Westwood One is an American radio network that was based in New York City. At one time, it was managed by CBS Radio, and was later purchased by the private equity firm, The Gores Group. Due to purchases, mergers and other forms of consolidation in the 1980s and 1990s, at one time or another, it had ownership stakes in or syndication rights to some of the most famous brands in network radio, including CBS, NBC, Mutual, CNN, Fox and Unistar. The company was one of the largest producers and distributors of radio programming in the United States. It broadcast entertainment, news, weather, sports, talk, and traffic programming to about 7,700 radio stations across the United States. The company was the top provider of local traffic reports in the US through its subsidiaries, Metro Networks, Shadow Broadcast Services, SmartRoute Systems, and Sigalert.com. Westwood One also offers weather services; originally using Accuweather, Westwood switched to The Weather Channel in 2009.

America's Best Music is the on-air branding of a soft oldies and adult standards 24-hour radio network, formerly known as AM Only. The service is syndicated by Westwood One, a subsidiary of Cumulus Media. It was one of the original Transtar Radio Networks formats. Despite its old name of AM Only, "America's Best Music" is no longer exclusive to AM stations and is carried on some FM stations.

Sale to Pamal Broadcasting

WKZY was sold to Pamal Broadcasting in late 2000, and in April 2001 launched a Soft Adult Contemporary format as "Lite Rock, 106.9 KZY." This format never did well, mostly because it was going up against heritage AC station 98.5 WKTK which has a better signal over the Gainesville-Ocala market. Pamal moved the studios from a single wide mobile home at the Trenton transmitter site to the studios of WLUS (now WDVH) on the east side of Gainesville. From that location, the station consistently had trouble delivering a reliable program feed to the transmitter site.

Pamal Broadcasting, Ltd. is a family-owned radio group with twenty-three stations in medium-to-small markets in the Northeast. Based in the Albany suburb of Latham, New York, Pamal Broadcasting was founded in 1986 as Albany Broadcasting Company, when business man James J. Morrell entered broadcast ownership with the purchase of WFLY and WPTR from Five States Tower Company, a Poughkeepsie, NY based broadcasting company that also owned radio stations WPDH and WEOK in the mid-Hudson valley. The Pamal name, a portmanteau of the names of Morrell's children, was adopted in 1996 though each cluster uses a unique name.

WKTK is a commercial radio station licensed in Crystal River, Florida, broadcasting to the Gainesville–Ocala, Florida area on 98.5 FM. The station began broadcasting in 1976 as WRYO, a religious station. The WKTK calls were adopted in 1986 and the station has been through various forms of the Adult contemporary and Hot AC formats since before finally settling into the mainstream AC sound it now uses. It can be picked up in portions of Orlando, Jacksonville, and the Tampa Bay Area. Each year, beginning in 2015, the station switches to a Christmas music format from mid-December through Christmas Day.

WDVH is a commercial radio station in Gainesville, Florida, broadcasting to the Gainesville-Ocala, Florida area on 980 AM.

In 2003, Pamal changed format to Adult Hits as "106.9 KZY." In October 2005, WKZY along with Pamal's other Gainesville stations moved to a new studio facility in the Sunshine Broadcasting Building, located at 100 NW 76 Drive, in the Tower Hill Office Park. In order to comply with FCC 73.1225(a) (main studio rule), the station maintained its main studio at the Trenton transmitter site.

In 2007, the station was sold to Johnson Licenses, Inc. In December 2007, 106.9 KZY transitioned to Hot Adult Contemporary and later to an Adult Top 40 sound with a rhythmic lean. In 2009, the station changed its format from Adult Top 40 back to a Hot AC. WKZY also changed its slogan from "More Hit Music... Better Mix" to "The Best Mix of the 80's, 90's and today." The station also aired The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show syndicated from Dallas.

Contemporary Christian

On September 20, 2012, WKZY announced a switch to Contemporary Christian Music as 106.9 The Pulse. The Kidd Kraddick Morning Show was discontinued. On November 8, 2012, the station changed its call sign to the current WPLL.

On August 9, 2017, WPLL announced it would end its Contemporary Christian format. The last day of operations was Sunday, August 12. WDVH-FM 101.7 picked up the Christian Contemporary format as "The Joy FM," fed by WJIS in the Tampa area.

On August 14, 2017, WPLL switched to a Classic Country format previously heard on WDVH-FM. [4]
