Watson Chapel is a neighborhood in Pine Bluff, Arkansas. It is located at the fork of U.S. Route 79 (Camden Road) and Highway 54 (Sulphur Springs Road), directly southwest of downtown Pine Bluff.

History

Watson Chapel was named after Cumberland Presbyterian minister Benjamin Watson, who settled in nearby Sulphur Springs in the 1870s. Watson later in 1872 founded a church and school which were named Good Faith church and later in 1876 changed to Watson's Chapel Cumberland Presbyterian Church. On April 5, 1880, the school district was formed, with the school still meeting in Rev. Benjamin Watson's church until a separate school building was erected in 1898. [1]

Education

Watson Chapel is served by the Watson Chapel School District, including Watson Chapel High School. The Pine Bluff and Jefferson County Library System operates the Watson Chapel Dave Burdick Library, near the high school and along U.S. Route 79. Its namesake is the library director from 1991 to 2012. [2]

Interstate 530 (I-530) in Arkansas is a spur route of the Interstate highway system, traveling 46.65 miles (75.08 km) from Pine Bluff north-northwest to Little Rock at an interchange of I-30/I-440/U.S. Highway 65 (US 65)/US 67/US 167. The highway also travels through the cities of Redfield and White Hall. In the future, I-530 will connect I-69 and I-30. Watson Chapel School District No. 24 (WCSD) is a public school district serving the communities of Pine Bluff and Sulphur Springs within Jefferson County, Arkansas, United States. Headquartered in Pine Bluff, Watson Chapel School District employs over 300 faculty and staff to provide educational programs for students ranging from kindergarten through twelfth grade and enrolls more than 2,200 students. In 2007, the ACLU sued the school district because the dress code allegedly denied students their first amendment rights.

Watson Chapel High School is a comprehensive public high school in the Watson Chapel School District in Pine Bluff, Arkansas that serves grades 10 through 12. It is one of three public high schools in Pine Bluff and the only high school managed by the Watson Chapel School District. It serves as the main feeder school for Watson Chapel Junior High School.
