William Leake Andrews

William Leake Andrews (born September 27, 1946) [1] is an American Professor Emeritus of English at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill [2] and a scholar of early African American literature. With books like To Tell a Free Story: The First Century of Afro-American Autobiography, 1760-1865 (1986), Andrews helped establish the academic study of African American literature in the late twentieth century. [3] In 2017, Andrews received the Jay B. Hubbell Medal for Lifetime Achievement in American Literature from the Modern Language Association. [4]

Biography

Early life and education

William Leake Andrews attended Davidson College in North Carolina, where he joined ROTC [5] and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1968. [6] The United States Army commissioned Andrews as a Second Lieutenant in 1968, and he later achieved the rank of Captain. He enrolled in the graduate program in English at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. While pursuing his MA (1970) and PhD (1973), Andrews decided to change his research topic to focus on African American writers like Charles W. Chesnutt. [7]

Academic career

At Texas Tech University, William L. Andrews was an assistant professor of English from 1973 to 1977. [1] In 1976, his article, "William Dean Howells and Charles W. Chesnutt: Criticism and Race Fiction in the Age of Booker T. Washington," won the Norman Foerster Prize for best article of the year in American Literature. [8] [9]

In 1977, Andrews moved to the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he was an assistant professor until 1979 and then an associate professor until 1988. [10] During this time, he published books and editions that promoted the field of African American literature, including The Literary Career of Charles W. Chesnutt (Louisiana State University Press, 1980) [11] and To Tell a Free Story (University of Illinois Press, 1986). The latter argued that African American writers developed strategies, using a range of public writings, to reach skeptical readers and publishers. [12] His critical editions with introductions reintroduced famous narratives by Black American women writers to the public in Sisters of the Spirit: Three Black Women’s Autobiographies of the Nineteenth Century (Indiana University Press, 1986). [13] Andrews also became known as a specialist in the work and life of Frederick Douglass. [14] Andrews was a founding editor of a/b: Auto/Biography Studies [15] and has served as the general editor of the series “Wisconsin Studies in Autobiography” from the University of Wisconsin Press since 1988. [16]

The University of Kansas offered Andrews the position of Joyce and Elizabeth Hall Professor of American Literature with tenure in 1989. He was also the Director of the Hall Center from 1993 until 1996. [1] Andrews continued to edit and publish new editions of African American autobiographies and narratives that had been widely read in the nineteenth century, such as the works of William Wells Brown. [17] These editions, released in print and later digitized, facilitated the use of African American authors in college courses, high school classrooms, and libraries. [18]

In 1997, Andrews accepted the E. Maynard Adams Professorship of English & Comparative Literature at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, which he held until his retirement in 2019. [19] With Henry Louis Gates, Jr., and Nellie Y. McKay, Andrews edited the Norton Anthology of African American Literature (first edition, 1997). [20] His work with Frances Foster and Trudier Harris on The Oxford Companion to African American Literature received accolades for its impact as a reference source. [21] Andrews led the project “North American Slave Narratives,” which became part of Documenting the American South, an award-winning digital humanities resource of texts, images, and recordings from the collections of the University Libraries at UNC. In 2007, his undergraduate alma mater Davidson College awarded him an honorary doctor of letters degree. [22] From 2005-2012, Andrews was the Senior Associate Dean for the Fine Arts and Humanities of UNC. UNC gave him the William F. Little Award for Distinguished Service to the College of Arts and Sciences in 2012. [23] The “Carolina Digital Humanities Initiative,” a project Andrews helped develop as a co-principal investigator, received a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation in 2012 to further digital teaching, research, and collaboration. [24]

Andrews supervised dissertations and mentored colleagues during his career. While at UNC-CH, Andrews helped secure grants to fund graduate fellowships from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. [25] Among his students are academics Andreá N. Williams, Associate Professor of English at The Ohio State University, and Joycelyn Moody, who holds the Sue E. Denman Distinguished Chair in American Literature at the University of Texas at San Antonio. Moody wrote about Andrews’s years of service to the profession “initiating the least experienced students into the world of the academy.” [26] Additionally, Andrews has assisted families in preserving and publishing texts. With Regina Mason, a descendant of the writer William Grimes, Andrews co-edited Life of William Grimes, the Runaway Slave (Oxford, 2008), first published in 1825. Mason characterized the original work as one that “paved the way for the American slave narrative” later in the nineteenth century. [27]

Andrews served on the Davidson College Commission on Race and Slavery between 2018 and 2020. [28] Andrews also worked with the North Carolina Humanities Council and the National Endowment for the Humanities. [29] [30]

In 2019, he published a monograph, Slavery and Class in the American South: A Generation of Slave Narrative Testimony, 1840-1865 with Oxford University Press. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., described Slavery and Class as a “seminal work of scholarship, one destined to generate a new branch of literary studies, dedicated to studying how class mattered within the African American tradition.” [31]

UNC academic-athletic scandal

While he was Senior Associate Dean for Fine Arts and Humanities at UNC-CH, Andrews was selected to co-commission a 2012 report that identified systemic flaws in standards for courses during the University of North Carolina academic-athletic scandal. The resulting report investigated the content and delivery of courses offered by the Department of African and Afro-American Studies between 2007 and 2011 summer sessions. [32]

Personal Life

Andrews has advocated for the human rights of incarcerated people and those who have been in jail with the Religious Coalition for a Non-Violent Durham. A pianist and singer, he has set the poetry of Emily Dickinson to music and performed some of his compositions at the 2013 Emily Dickinson International Society International Conference. [33]

Charron Andrews (née Fenbert) married William Andrews in the summer of 1984. Together, they have two children and one grandchild. By tracing his genealogy, Andrews learned that his Virginian ancestor John Ferneyhough, Jr., joined a local organization in 1835 that opposed abolitionists. In the preface to Slavery and Class, Andrews reflects on being a scholar of African American narrative whose forbears profited from slavery. [34] [35]

Frederick Douglass was an American social reformer, abolitionist, orator, writer, and statesman. He became the most important leader of the movement for African-American civil rights in the 19th century.

The slave narrative is a type of literary genre involving the (written) autobiographical accounts of enslaved persons, particularly Africans enslaved in the Americas, though many other examples exist. Over six thousand such narratives are estimated to exist; about 150 narratives were published as separate books or pamphlets. In the United States during the Great Depression (1930s), more than 2,300 additional oral histories on life during slavery were collected by writers sponsored and published by the Works Progress Administration, a New Deal program. Most of the 26 audio-recorded interviews are held by the Library of Congress.

Charles Waddell Chesnutt was an American author, essayist, political activist and lawyer, best known for his novels and short stories exploring complex issues of racial and social identity in the post-Civil War South. Two of his books were adapted as silent films in 1926 and 1927 by the African-American director and producer Oscar Micheaux. Following the Civil Rights Movement during the 20th century, interest in the works of Chesnutt was revived. Several of his books were published in new editions, and he received formal recognition. A commemorative stamp was printed in 2008.

<i>The Liberator</i> (newspaper) American abolitionist newspaper (1831–1865)

The Liberator (1831–1865) was a weekly abolitionist newspaper, printed and published in Boston by William Lloyd Garrison and, through 1839, by Isaac Knapp. Religious rather than political, it appealed to the moral conscience of its readers, urging them to demand immediate freeing of the slaves ("immediatism"). It also promoted women's rights, an issue that split the American abolitionist movement. Despite its modest circulation of 3,000, it had prominent and influential readers, including all the abolitionist leaders, among them Frederick Douglass, Beriah Green, Arthur and Lewis Tappan, and Alfred Niger. It frequently printed or reprinted letters, reports, sermons, and news stories relating to American slavery, becoming a sort of community bulletin board for the new abolitionist movement that Garrison helped foster.

Plantation tradition is a genre of literature based in the Southern United States that is heavily nostalgic for antebellum times. The ideology is that of the Lost Cause of the Confederacy, though this specific genre is often called "The Plantation Myth."

<i>Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass</i> Autobiography by Frederick Douglass

Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave is an 1845 memoir and treatise on abolition written by African-American orator and former slave Frederick Douglass during his time in Lynn, Massachusetts. It is the first of Douglass's three autobiographies, the others being My Bondage and My Freedom (1855) and Life and Times of Frederick Douglass.

African American literature is the body of literature produced in the United States by writers of African descent. It begins with the works of such late 18th-century writers as Phillis Wheatley. Before the high point of enslaved people narratives, African American literature was dominated by autobiographical spiritual narratives. The genre known as slave narratives in the 19th century were accounts by people who had generally escaped from slavery, about their journeys to freedom and ways they claimed their lives. The Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s was a great period of flowering in literature and the arts, influenced both by writers who came North in the Great Migration and those who were immigrants from Jamaica and other Caribbean islands. African American writers have been recognized by the highest awards, including the Nobel Prize given to Toni Morrison in 1993. Among the themes and issues explored in this literature are the role of African Americans within the larger American society, African American culture, racism, slavery, and social equality. African-American writing has tended to incorporate oral forms, such as spirituals, sermons, gospel music, blues, or rap.

African-American folktales are the storytelling and oral history of enslaved African Americans during the 1700s-1900s. Prevalent themes in African-American folktales include tricksters, life lessons, heartwarming tales, and slavery. African Americans created folktales that spoke about the hardships of slavery and told stories of folk spirits that could outwit their slaveholders and defeat their enemies. These folk stories gave hope to enslaved people that folk spirits would liberate them from slavery. One of these heroes that they looked up to was the charming High John the Conqueror, who was a cunning trickster against his slave masters. He often empowered newly freed slaves, saying that if they needed him, his spirit would be in a local root. Other common figures in African-American folktales include Anansi, Brer Rabbit, and Uncle Monday. Many folktales are unique to African-American culture, while others are influenced by African, European, and Native American tales.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">David Ruggles</span> American abolitionist (1810–1849)

David Ruggles was an African-American abolitionist in New York who resisted slavery by his participation in a Committee of Vigilance and the Underground Railroad to help fugitive slaves reach free states. He was a printer in New York City during the 1830s, who also wrote numerous articles, and "was the prototype for black activist journalists of his time." He claimed to have led more than 600 fugitive slaves to freedom in the North, including Frederick Douglass, who became a friend and fellow activist. Ruggles opened the first African-American bookstore in 1834.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Education during the slave period in the United States</span>

During the era of slavery in the United States, the education of enslaved African Americans, except for religious instruction, was discouraged, and eventually made illegal in most of the Southern states. After 1831, the prohibition was extended in some states to free blacks as well. Even if educating Blacks was legal, they still had little access to education, in the North as well as the South.

<i>The Bondwomans Narrative</i> 19th-century slave narrative by Hannah Crafts

The Bondwoman's Narrative is a novel by Hannah Crafts who claimed to have escaped from slavery in North Carolina. The manuscript was not authenticated and properly published until 2002. Some scholars believe that the novel was written between 1853 and 1861. It is one of the very first books by an African-American woman, others including the novel Our Nig by Harriet Wilson, published in 1859, and the autobiography Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs, published in 1861.

Lunsford Lane was an entrepreneur tobacconist from North Carolina who bought freedom for himself and his family. He became a vocal opponent of slavery and wrote a slave narrative autobiography. His life and narrative shows the plight of slavery, even for the relatively privileged slaves.

Hannah Bond, also known by her pen name Hannah Crafts, was an American writer who escaped from slavery in North Carolina about 1857 and went to the North. Bond settled in New Jersey, likely married Thomas Vincent, and became a teacher. She wrote The Bondwoman's Narrative by Hannah Crafts after gaining freedom. It is the only known novel by an enslaved woman.

"The Passing of Grandison" is a short story written by Charles W. Chesnutt and published in the collection The Wife of His Youth and Other Stories of the Color-Line (1899). The story takes place in the United States in the early 1850s, at the time of anti-slavery sentiment and the abolitionist movement in the Northern United States, and after the passage of the Fugitive Slave Law of 1850.

Mattie Jane Jackson was an African American author. She is known for her 1866 autobiography and slave narrative The Story of Mattie J. Jackson: Her Parentage, Experience of Eighteen Years in Slavery, Incidents During the War, Her Escape from Slavery: A True Story, which contributed to the national knowledge of African American family life during slavery and the Reconstruction era. Her autobiography presents the history of multi-generational familial relationships and their inner strength, despite repeated, forced separation. A copy of the manuscript is held in trust at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Kate Drumgoold was an American woman born into slavery around 1858 near Petersburg, Virginia. Her life is captured in her 1898 autobiography, A Slave Girl's Story, Being an Autobiography of Kate Drumgoold. It offers a message of racial uplift, faith, and education. "It is a rare portrait of a former slave who moved between the highly urbanized environment of New York City and the rural South."

William Grimes was an African American barber and writer who authored what is considered the first narrative of a formerly enslaved American, Life of William Grimes, the Runaway Slave, published in 1825, with a second edition published in 1855. Another revised edition was published by one of his descendants in 2008. Grimes escaped slavery by boarding on a ship called Casket, which sailed from Savannah, Georgia to New York City. He then walked to Connecticut from New York City to begin his life as a free man. Grimes lived in Stratford, Norwalk, Fairfield, Bridgeport and Stratford Point alongside New Haven and Litchfield, Connecticut following his escape from slavery. New Haven was where Grimes eventually settled to live out his final days.

Manisha Sinha is an Indian-born American historian, and the Draper Chair in American History at the University of Connecticut. She is the author of The Slave's Cause: A History of Abolition (2016), which won the Frederick Douglass Book Prize.

Abolitionist children’s literature includes works written for children by authors committed to the movement to end slavery. It aimed to instill in young readers an understanding of slavery, racial hierarchies, sympathy for the enslaved, and a desire for emancipation. A variety of literary forms were used by abolitionist children’s authors including, short stories, poems, songs, nursery rhymes and dialogues, much of it written by white women. Pamphlets, picture books and periodicals were the primary forms of abolitionist children’s literature, often using Biblical themes to reinforce the wickedness of slavery. Abolitionist children's literature was countered with pro-slavery material aimed at children, which attempting to depict slavery as a noble pursuit, and slaves as stupid and grateful, or evil.
