Yokum is an unincorporated community in Upshur County, West Virginia, United States.
West Virginia is a state in the Appalachian, Mid-Atlantic and Southeastern regions of the United States. It is bordered by Pennsylvania to the northeast, Maryland to the east and northeast, Virginia to the southeast, Kentucky to the southwest, and Ohio to the northwest. West Virginia is the 41st-largest state by area and ranks 38th in population, with a population of 1,795,045 residents. The capital and largest city is Charleston.
Upshur County is a county in the U.S. state of West Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,254. Its county seat is Buckhannon. The county was formed in 1851 from Randolph, Barbour, and Lewis counties and named for Abel Parker Upshur, a distinguished statesman and jurist of Virginia. Upshur served as United States Secretary of State and Secretary of the Navy under President John Tyler.
Li'l Abner is a satirical American comic strip that appeared in many newspapers in the United States, Canada and Europe, featuring a fictional clan of hillbillies in the impoverished mountain village of Dogpatch, USA. Written and drawn by Al Capp (1909–1979), the strip ran for 43 years, from August 13, 1934, through November 13, 1977. The Sunday page debuted six months after the daily, on February 24, 1935. It was originally distributed by United Feature Syndicate, and later by the Chicago Tribune New York News Syndicate.
Salomey was the Yokums' beloved pet pig in the classic comic strip Li'l Abner, by cartoonist Al Capp (1909–1979). Salomey, whose name was a pun on both salami and Salome, was supposedly the last female Hammus alabammus—an adorable species of pig, which led to a number of story arcs. Cute, lovable, and intelligent, she was accepted as part of the family.
WQKE, The Quake is broadcast on 93.9 FM in Plattsburgh, New York. The college radio station is supported by the Student Association of SUNY Plattsburgh. Seattle Smooth's dam is the unraced mare, Our Seattle Star, by Seattle Song who was bred to Quiet American; a Grade 1 winner by Fappiano who was in turn sired by the great Mr. Prospector.
