The Yonge Street Rapidway is a bus rapid transit corridor on Yonge Street in York Region, Ontario, Canada. Construction of the Yonge Street portion of the network began in 2014. [1] The Rapidway is primarily used by the Viva Blue service.

The Yonge Street Rapidway is central to the Vivanext transport masterplan and will eventually extend from the Richmond Hill/Langstaff Urban Growth Centre at Highway 7 to Green Lane in East Gwillimbury. [2]

In February 2010, a public open house was held for the first segment of the Yonge Street Rapidway, which will extend from Mulock to Davis Drive in Newmarket. [3]

The first segment from the Newmarket Bus Terminal on Davis Drive to Mulock Drive opened in January 2020. The second segment, from 19th Avenue to the Richmond Hill Centre Terminal at Highway 7, opened in December 2020. [2]

The corridor was originally intended to continue south of Richmond Hill Centre Terminal towards the regional bus terminal at Finch subway station in Toronto. However, with the anticipated northward extension of the Yonge–University subway, the Rapidway's southern terminus will be Richmond Hill Centre. [4]

Stations

Excluding the terminals, there will be up to 19 Rapidway stations between Newmarket and Richmond Hill. Ten stations were open by the end of 2020. [5]

Richmond Hill Centre Terminal

Richmond Hill Centre Terminal is a York Region Transit, Viva, and GO Transit bus terminal in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Despite its name, the terminal is not located in downtown Richmond Hill, but is situated 4 km to the south at the city's southern limits, bordering Vaughan and Markham, near the connecting road that links the grade-separated Yonge Street and Highway 7 intersection. It opened on September 4, 2005. It is immediately west of the Langstaff GO train station, but is separated by the tracks. A pedestrian bridge over the tracks was opened in March 2008 to connect the bus terminal and the train station. Public washrooms were added to the terminal in December 2012.

Viva Yellow or the Davis Drive corridor line, is a Viva bus rapid transit line that serves Newmarket, Ontario, Canada on the Davis Drive Rapidway. This route is within York Region Transit's North Division, and is operated by Tok Transit under contract from York Region.

The Green Lane Rapidway is a proposed bus rapid transit extension in Newmarket and East Gwillimbury, Ontario. It does not have a committed schedule under the Vivanext plan. It is listed in Metrolinx's regional transportation for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area, The Big Move under the 25-year plan. It will extend from Davis Drive west of Yonge, then north along Yonge Street from Davis Drive to Green Lane, then from Yonge Street in the west along Green Lane East to the East Gwillimbury GO Station just east of Main Street North in the east.

The Big Move is a regional transportation plan (RTP) published in 2008 and consisting of 62 rapid transit projects to be implemented across the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). These rapid transit projects are intended to form a seamlessly integrated regional rapid transit network, which is the first priority action in the regional transportation plan. These projects form two long-term templates with 15 and 25 year horizons. These templates outline broad projects; specific details about technology, alignment, stations and service levels for each project are subsequently determined though a cost–benefit analysis or an environmental assessment process.

Viva Silver is a bus rapid transit route planned by York Region Transit to operate in Regional Municipality of York, Ontario, Canada. It is expected to begin service in 2022 as part of the Viva Rapid Transit service, after the opening of the Vaughan Metropolitan Centre subway station on the Spadina extension of the Line 1 Yonge–University subway in Toronto.
