The 2024 European Parliament election in Portugal will elect the Portuguese delegation to the European Parliament from 2024 to 2029. This will be the ninth European Parliament election held in Portugal. The election will be held on Sunday, 9 June 2024. [1]
This election takes place just three months after the 10 March 2024 legislative election, which resulted in a very narrow win for the Democratic Alliance, thus is being seen as a "second round" of the March elections. [2]
The voting method to be used, for the election of European members of parliament, is by proportional representation using the D'Hondt method. For the 2024 European Parliament elections, Portugal has 21 seats to fill. Members of Parliament are elected in a single constituency, corresponding to the entire national territory.
The proposed election day, 9 June, conflicted with the Portugal Day holiday on 10 June, plus several other local holidays. The government feared that an election close to so many holidays would suppress turnout [3] and attempted to find a compromise with EU countries to find an alternative date, but, no unanimity was reached and the election was then expected to be held on 9 June. [4]
On 4 April 2024, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa confirmed that the election will be held on 9 June 2024. [5]

The campaign is being dominated by issues like Immigration and Defense [24] , with national politics also an issue due to the narrow victory of the Democratic Alliance in the 10 March legislative elections and the unstable situation of Luís Montenegro's minority government, with the prospect of a snap election in the short term.
