In order to realise UNESCO's goals of promoting and preserving the different cultures through the influential medium of cinema, it honours and promotes the films, actors, directors, and cultures of the Asia Pacific area to a worldwide audience.

The Asia Pacific Screen Award for Achievement in Directing has been given annually by the Asia Pacific Screen Academy since 2007.

<i>Drive My Car</i> (film) 2021 film by Ryusuke Hamaguchi

Drive My Car is a 2021 Japanese drama film directed by Ryusuke Hamaguchi and written by Hamaguchi and Takamasa Oe. It follows a theatre director, who directs a multilingual production of Uncle Vanya while dealing with the death of his wife. It is based on Haruki Murakami's short story of the same name and other stories from his 2014 collection Men Without Women. Tōko Miura, Park Yu-rim, Jin Dae-yeon, Sonia Yuan, Ahn Hwitae, Perry Dizon, Satoko Abe, and Masaki Okada also star.

The 16th Asian Film Awards was held on March 12, 2023 at Hong Kong Jockey Club Auditorium in Hong Kong Palace Museum. The nominations were announced on January 6, 2023. At the 16th edition of the awards ceremony, 30 films from 22 regions and countries were shortlisted for 81 nominations. South Korean film Decision to Leave received 10 nominations most for any film whereas Drive My Car with eight nominations was second.
