Meletius I Pegas served as Greek Patriarch of Alexandria between 1590 and 1601. Simultaneously from 1597 to 1598 he served also as locum tenens of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. He is honoured as a saint in the Eastern Orthodox Church, with his feast day held on September 13.

Simone Majoli was an Italian canon lawyer, bishop and author. His encyclopedic work Dies caniculares , covered a wide range of topics in natural history, demonology and other subjects such as werewolves. First published in 1597, it ran to several later editions. He is mentioned in the early history of the explanation of fossils, by Charles Lyell, as a pioneer of volcanic explanations.

The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1597 was a series of nationwide witch trials that took place in the whole of Scotland from March to October 1597. At least 400 people were put on trial for witchcraft and various forms of diabolism during the witch hunt. The exact number of those executed is unknown, but is believed to be about 200. The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1597 was the second of five nationwide witch hunts in Scottish history, the others being The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1590–91, The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1628–1631, The Great Scottish witch hunt of 1649–50 and The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1661–62.
