Defending champion John Newcombe successfully defended his title, defeating Stan Smith in the final, 6–3, 5–7, 2–6, 6–4, 6–4 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 1971 Wimbledon Championships. It was his third Wimbledon singles title.

Rod Laver defeated Andrés Gimeno in the final, 6–3, 6–4, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 1969 Australian Open. It was the first step in an eventual Grand Slam for Laver. This was the first edition of the tournament to be open to professional players, marking a period in tennis history known as the Open Era.

The draw comprised 32 teams of which four were seeded. Ilie Năstase and Ion Țiriac were the defending champion but did not participate in this edition. Third-seeded Rod Laver and Ken Rosewall won the doubles title, defeating unseeded Owen Davidson and John Newcombe in the final, 7–5, 7–6.
