FC Barcelona enjoyed a decent season by winning both Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. The team extended its increasingly frustrating run without winning the league title to three years, as Real Madrid emerged as league winners. During the season, Ronaldo, a Brazilian youngster was the club's top scorer, netting 47 goals in all competitions. Upon winning both trophies, manager Bobby Robson left the club, eventually signing with PSV Eindhoven after spending a sabbatical year. He was replaced by former Ajax coach Louis Van Gaal. Top scorer Ronaldo would leave the club after this season in a surprise transfer to Inter Milan.

The 1997–98 La Liga season, the 67th since its establishment, started on 30 August 1997 and finished on 16 May 1998. On 29 March 1998, Sporting Gijón drew 0–0 with Real Zaragoza while Racing Santander, who were 19th in the table at the time, lost by Athletic Bilbao 4–3, to make Sporting Gijón the first team in La Liga history to be relegated in March, ending the season with a League record low points tally of just 13.
The 1996–97 La Liga season, the 66th since its establishment, started on 31 August 1996 and finished on 23 June 1997. Four or five clubs were relegated to Segunda División at the end of the season as the number of clubs was reduced to 20 starting from the 1997–98 season. This was the last season played with 22 teams.
The 1996–97 season was the Real Madrid CF's 66th season in La Liga. This article shows player statistics and official matches that the club played during the 1996–97 season. For the first time since 1977–78, Real Madrid was not involved in any European competitions due to the previous season's lowest league finish in 19 years.
The 1997–98 FC Barcelona season saw the club win the La Liga title and the Copa Del Rey, under the guidance of new coach Louis van Gaal. Hired from Ajax Amsterdam, Van Gaal brought striker Sonny Anderson and attacking midfielder Rivaldo with him. The club sold Ronaldo to Inter Milan just before the season began, with Anderson becoming their main striker. Van Gaal introduced a 4-3-3 formation to Barcelona, under which Rivaldo scored 20 goals in the league as centre forward. Barcelona won their 15th La Liga title, 2nd European Super Cup title and their 24th Copa del Rey title, thus winning a domestic double. Barcelona crashed out of the UEFA Champions League, finishing last in their group.
The 1995–96 season was FC Barcelona's 97th season in existence and 67th consecutive season in the top flight of Spanish football, La Liga. Barcelona again failed to follow up on their 1993-94 league title, instead finishing third in the league. In April, the team lost the chance at three trophies in 10 days. First, Barcelona reached the finals of the Copa del Rey, losing 1-0 to Atlético Madrid. They then stumbled in the UEFA Cup as they were knocked out by Bayern Munich in a 1-2 loss at home, before losing definitively to Atlético Madrid at home, erasing the chance of a league win.
The 1995–1996 campaign was the 90th season in Atlético Madrid's history and their 60th season in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football. The team won 'The Double' both La Liga and Copa del Rey in a great season for supporters.
The 1996–1997 campaign was the 91st season in Atlético Madrid's history and their 62nd season in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football.
The 1997–1998 campaign was the 92nd season in Atlético Madrid's history and their 63rd season in La Liga, the top division of Spanish football.
A season after promotion, Betis finished third and reached the Copa del Rey final.
The 1997–98 season was the 96th season in Real Madrid CF's history and their 67th consecutive season in La Liga.
In the 1996–97 season, CD Tenerife failed to improve on the previous season's fifth-place finish, although they made up for the league disappointment by reaching the UEFA Cup semi-finals. Tenerife scored 69 goals in the league and could have possibly finished higher were it not for their leaky defence, which conceded more goals than all but five of the La Liga teams not relegated during the season.
FC Barcelona did not repeat its successful season in 1993–94, and fell back to fourth in La Liga, as well as knocked out of the Champions League in the quarter-finals by Paris Saint-Germain.
The 1990–91 season is FC Barcelona's 92nd season in existence and the club's 60th consecutive season in the top flight of Spanish football.
During the 1995–96 Spanish football season, Valencia CF competed in La Liga and the Copa del Rey.
In the 1997–98 season Real Club Deportivo Mallorca competed in La Liga and Copa del Rey.
Deportivo La Coruña's 1996–97 season included its 32nd appearance in La Liga, where it ranked third place. Welsh manager John Toshack was replaced after 23 rounds by Brazilian head coach Carlos Alberto Silva.
During the 1997–98 season, Betis competed in La Liga, Copa del Rey and UEFA Cup Winners' Cup.
During the 1994–95 season Valencia CF competed in La Liga and Copa del Rey
