The 2000 IFA Shield Final was the 106th final of the IFA Shield, the second oldest football competition in India, and was contested between Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan on 16 September 2000. [1] [2]

Contents

East Bengal won the final 41 via penalties after the game ended 11 after extra-time, to claim their 25th IFA Shield title. [3]

East Bengal entered the 2000 IFA Shield as one of the National Football League teams from Kolkata and were allocated into Group A alongside BNR, JCT and Calcutta Port Trust. In the opening game against BNR on 5 September, East Bengal managed a 10 victory courtesy of a solitary goal from Bijen Singh. In the second game, East Bengal defeated JCT 30 with a brace from Dipendu Biswas and Bijen Singh scoring the third for the team. East Bengal defeated Calcuta Port Trust 30 in the last game of the group stage with Dipendu Biswas scoring another brace and Bijen Singh scoring in third consecutive match as East Bengal topped the group with three wins and reached the last four. In the semi-finals, East Bengal defeated Tollygunge Agragami 10 courtesy of a solitary strike from Surkumar Singh as they reached the final. [1] [2]

Mohun Bagan entered the 2000 IFA Shield as the defending champions and were allocated into Group B alongside State Bank of Travancore, George Telegraph and Tollygunge Agragami. In the opening game, Mohun Bagan defeated State Bank of Travancore 31 with Jose Ramirez Barreto scoring a brace and an own goal from Paul Anthony. Sylvester Ignatius scored the only goal for SBT. Mohun Bagan defeated George Telegraph 30 in the second match. Jose Barreto, R. C. Prakash and Satyajit Chatterjee scored for the team. In the last match of the group stage, Mohun Bagan drew 11 with Tollygunge Agragami after Bhabani Mohanty scored an early goal for Tollygunge only to be equalised by Jose Barreto in the second half as Mohun Bagan topped the group with two wins and a draw to reach the last four. In the semi-finals, Mohun Bagan defeated JCT 10 with Basudeb Mondal scoring the only goal taking them to the final. [1] [2]

The National Football League (NFL) was the men's highest level of the Indian football league system from 1996 to 2007. Founded by the All India Football Federation (AIFF) in 1996, the NFL was the first football league in India to be organized on a national scale. Subrata Bhattacharya is an Indian football manager and former professional footballer. He primarily played as a defender for India national team and spent seventeen years playing for Mohun Bagan. He was the stopper back for Mohun Bagan during 1975 IFA Shield final when East Bengal beat Mohun Bagan 5–0, the biggest ever margin in the Kolkata Derby. He won Indian National Football League for two times as a coach of Mohun Bagan. He was conferred with the Arjuna Award in 1989.

The 2012–13 Mohun Bagan FC season was the club's 6th season in I-League and 123rd season since its establishment in 1889. The team finished runners-up in the Calcutta Football League and a dismal tenth in the I-League. They were crowned Champions in the Airlines Cup after Mohammedan refused to play the finals and gave a walkover. Mohun Bagan crashed out in the group stage of the Federation Cup and were defeated by arch rivals East Bengal in the semi-finals of the IFA Shield.

The 2015–16 Mohun Bagan FC season was the club's 9th season in I-League and 126th season since its establishment in 1889. During this season, Mohun Bagan started the I-League as the defending champions. The team finished 3rd in the Calcutta Football League and runners-up in the I-League. Mohun Bagan were defeated by Shandong Luneng of China in the preliminary round 2 of the AFC Champions League and were eliminated from the competition at this stage. They bowed out of the AFC Cup in the round of 16 where they were defeated by the Tampines Rovers of Singapore. They were crowned Champions of the Federation Cup after they defeated Aizawl in the final.

The 2016–17 Mohun Bagan FC season was the club's 10th season in I-League and 127th season since its establishment in 1889. They finished third in the Calcutta Football League and runners-up in the I-League. Mohun Bagan finished third in group stage of the AFC Cup and ended the season as runners-up of Federation Cup.

The 1998 Indian Federation Cup, also known as 1998 Kalyani Black Label Federation Cup due to sponsorship reasons, was the 21st season of the Indian Federation Cup. It was held between 23 August and 12 September 1998. Salgaocar were the defending champions, but were eliminated in the first round by State Bank of Travancore. Mohun Bagan won the tournament for the tenth time, following a 2–1 over East Bengal in the final played at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata, a replay of the previous edition's semifinal when the latter won. Amit Das and Hemanta Dora of Mohun Bagan were named the Player and Goalkeeper of the Tournament.

The 2016–17 season was the East Bengal FC's 97th season in existence. The club had already won the Calcutta Football League and became the runners of 2016 Bordoloi Trophy.

The 2018–19 season is the club's 99th season in existence. East Bengal discontinued its tie-up with their main sponsors "Kingfisher" after 20 long years of partnership. On 5 July 2018, East Bengal announced a partnership with business giants Quess Corp as their main sponsors, leading to the formation of a new entity named "Quess East Bengal FC Pvt. Ltd." (QEBFC).

The 2018 Calcutta Football League Premier Division was the 121st season of the Calcutta Premier Division, a state association football league within the Indian state of West Bengal. The league is divided into two groups – Division A and Division B. The Championship title is awarded only to the Division A winner, while four teams from Division A are relegated to Division B at the end of the season and four teams from Division B are simultaneously promoted to Division A for the next season. The fixtures of Division A and Division B started on 3 August and 5 August 2018 respectively.

The 2003–04 season was East Bengal Football Club's 8th season in the National Football League, and also marked the club's 84th season. East Bengal successfully defended their league title from the previous season, competing in the 2003-04 NFL. They have also won the 2003 Calcutta Football League and the 2003 ASEAN Club Championship. The 2002–03 IFA Shield Final was the 108th final of the IFA Shield, the second oldest football competition in India, and was contested between Kolkata giants East Bengal and Churchill Brothers of Goa on 22 January 2003.

The 2007–08 season was East Bengal's 1st season in the I-League and 88th season in existence.

The 2005–06 season was East Bengal's 10th season in the National Football League and 86th season in existence.

The 1970 IFA Shield Final was the 74th final of the IFA Shield, the second oldest football competition in India, and was contested between Kolkata giant East Bengal and Iranian giant PAS Tehran on 25 September 1970 at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.

The 2004 Durand Cup Final was the 117th final of the Durand Cup, the oldest football competition in India, and was contested between Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan on 10 November 2004 at the Ambedkar Stadium in Delhi.

The 1975 IFA Shield Final was the 79th final of the IFA Shield, the second oldest football competition in India, and was contested between Kolkata giants East Bengal and Mohun Bagan on 30 September 1975 at the Mohun Bagan Ground in Kolkata.
