The 2016 IFA Shield (officially known as the LG IFA Shield 2016 [1] [2] for sponsorship reasons) was the 120th edition of the IFA Shield. The tournament is designed as a U19 youth football tournament since 2015.
This year ten football clubs going to participate including two overseas football clubs. The winners of LG IFA Shield was awarded with an amount of ₹ 5 Lakhs, while the second seeded team will get an amount of ₹ 3 Lakhs. [3]
The tournament was managed by Ekalavya Sports Foundation, run by former international Kalyan Chaubey and other TFA graduates. [3]
Tata Football Academy became the champions of the tournament by beating AIFF Elite Academy on 6 March 2016 which was played at Mohun Bagan Ground. The score was even 2–2 during the regulation time. After extra time match ended 3–2 in the favour of Tata Football Academy. Shubham Ghosh was awarded the man of the match and Baoringdao Bodo player of the tournament. [4]
Most of the matches were held at East Bengal Ground and Mohun Bagan Ground while Kalyani Stadium and Barasat Stadium were the other venues. [3]
Four teams played in knockout format. The winner of the knockouts qualified for the final phase of the tournament.

Mohun Bagan Athletic Club is an Indian professional sports club based in Kolkata, West Bengal. Founded in 1889, its football section is one of the oldest in India and Asia. The club is most notable for its victory over East Yorkshire Regiment in the 1911 IFA Shield final. This victory made Mohun Bagan the first all-Indian side to win a championship over a British side and was a major moment during India's push for independence. Although Mohun Bagan is a multi-sport club, the primary sport since its foundation had been football.
Mohun Bagan Ground, also known as Mohun Bagan–Calcutta FC Ground, is a football stadium located in the maidan region of central Kolkata, just opposite the Eden Gardens. The stadium is leased to Mohun Bagan AC and is mostly used as training ground of ATK Mohun Bagan FC. The stadium has a capacity of 22,000 spectators. The club offices of Mohun Bagan are adjacent to it. It is also the home ground of Calcutta FC which it shares with Mohun Bagan.
Subhash Bhowmick was an Indian football player and manager. During his playing career, he represented the "Big Two" of Kolkata football, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan. He also represented India in various international tournaments between 1970 and 1985. He was popularly known as Bhombol in the football arena of the West Bengal.
The IFA Shield is an annual football competition organized by the Indian Football Association West Bengal. The IFA is the governing body of football in the state of West Bengal, came into existence in 1893. Named after the association, the IFA Shield tournament was started in the same year. It is the third oldest football tournament in India, after Durand Cup and Trades Cup, and the one of the oldest football competitions in the world.
Deepak Kumar Mondal is an Indian professional footballer who last played as a right-back for Food Corporation of India FC. A graduate of the Tata Football Academy, Mondol, an Arjuna Award winner, was one of India's most prominent right backs for over a decade, earning 47 caps with the India national team. Mondal also played with both the Kolkata giants, East Bengal and Mohun Bagan, spending five years at each club, captaining both of them.

The 2012–13 Mohun Bagan A.C. season is the 123rd season of Mohun Bagan A.C. since the club's formation in 1889 and their 16th season in the I-League which is India's top football league. The team finished runners-up in the Calcutta Football League and a dismal tenth in the I-League. They were crowned Champions in the Airlines Cup after Mohammedan refused to play the finals and gave a walkover. Mohun Bagan crashed out in the group stage of the Federation Cup and were defeated by arch rivals East Bengal in the semi finals of the IFA Shield.
The 2013 I-League U20 was the fifth season of the Indian I-League U20 competition. The season took place during the I-League break between February and March. The tournament began on 6 March in Jamshedpur at the facilities which are currently used by Tata Football Academy. The stadiums were officially announced on 29 January 2013 as the JRD Tata Sports Complex and the Gopal Maidan.
Prasun Banerjee is a retired international footballer and an Arjuna Award Winner (1979) from Kolkata, India. Younger brother of the Pradip Kumar Banerjee, Prasun had also captained the India national football team in international tournaments.
The 2014–15 I-League U19 is the seventh season of the Indian I-League U19 competition. The season began on 13 December 2014 and concluded on 6 May 2015. AIFF Elite Academy won the trophy for the first time.
The 2015–16 I-League was the ninth season of the I-League, the Indian professional football league, since its establishment in 2007. The season commenced on 9 January 2016, after the Indian Super League finished, and concluded on 24 April 2016.
The 2015–16 Mohun Bagan A.C. season is the 126th season of Mohun Bagan A.C. since the club's formation in 1889 and their 9th season in the I-League which is India's top football league. During this season, Mohun Bagan started the I-League as the defending champions. The team finished 3rd in the Calcutta Football league and runners-up in the I-League. Mohun Bagan were defeated by Shandong Luneng of China in the preliminary round 2 of the AFC Champions League and were eliminated from the competition at this stage. They bowed out of the AFC Cup in the round of 16 where they were defeated by the Tampines Rovers of Singapore. They were crowned Champions of the Federation Cup after they defeated Aizawl in the final.
The 2015–16 season is East Bengal FC's 96th season in existence. The club had won the Calcutta Football League this season and became the runners of 2015 Sheikh Kamal International Club Cup.
The 2015–16 I-League U18 is the eighth season of the Indian I-League U18 competition. The U-18 I-League is the premier age-group football tournament of the country which has been re-structured keeping AFC U-19 Championship in mind. The season began on 8 October 2015. and on 10 February 2016, AIFF Elite Academy won the title by defeating Tata Football Academy 2–0 in the final. AIFF Elite Academy also remained unbeaten in the tournament.
The 2016–17 Mohun Bagan A.C. season is the 127th season of Mohun Bagan A.C. since the club's formation in 1889 and their 10th season in the I-League which is India's top football league. They finished third in the table in the Calcutta Football League. They finished second in the I-League and third in group stage of the AFC Cup. Mohun Bagan ended the season as runners-up of Federation Cup.
The 2016–17 season was the East Bengal FC's 97th season in existence. The club had already won the Calcutta Football League and became the runners of 2016 Bordoloi Trophy.
Mohun Bagan youth teams were the under-18, under-15 and under-13 football teams of Indian professional multi-sports club Mohun Bagan. The Under-18 team of the club was generally referred to as the primary youth team as it was the last stage of progression for promotion of youth players into the first team. The youth teams participated in the Calcutta Football League and the Elite league of various age groups. The team was set up with the leadership of the footballer Balai Das Chattopadhyay in 1944.
The 2003–04 season was East Bengal Football Club's 8th season in the National Football League, and also marked the club's 84th season. East Bengal successfully defended their league title from the previous season, competing in the 2003-04 NFL. They have also won the 2003 Calcutta Football League and the 2003 ASEAN Club Championship. They became runners-up in the 2003 Super Cup, 2003 Durand Cup and 2003 IFA Shield.
The 2007–08 season was East Bengal's 1st season in the I-League and 88th season in existence.
The 2005–06 season was East Bengal's 10th season in the National Football League and 86th season in existence.
