The 2016 IFA Shield (officially known as the LG IFA Shield 2016 [1] [2] for sponsorship reasons) was the 120th edition of the IFA Shield. The tournament is designed as a U19 youth football tournament since 2015.

Contents

This year ten football clubs going to participate including two overseas football clubs. The winners of LG IFA Shield was awarded with an amount of 5 Lakhs, while the second seeded team will get an amount of 3 Lakhs. [3]

The tournament was managed by Ekalavya Sports Foundation, run by former international Kalyan Chaubey and other TFA graduates. [3]

Tata Football Academy became the champions of the tournament by beating AIFF Elite Academy on 6 March 2016 which was played at Mohun Bagan Ground. The score was even 2–2 during the regulation time. After extra time match ended 3–2 in the favour of Tata Football Academy. Shubham Ghosh was awarded the man of the match and Baoringdao Bodo player of the tournament. [4]

Venue

Most of the matches were held at East Bengal Ground and Mohun Bagan Ground while Kalyani Stadium and Barasat Stadium were the other venues. [3]

Qualifying round

Four teams played in knockout format. The winner of the knockouts qualified for the final phase of the tournament.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mohun Bagan Ground</span> Football stadium in Kolkata, India

Mohun Bagan Ground, also known as Mohun Bagan–Calcutta FC Ground, is a football stadium located in Maidan, Kolkata, just opposite Eden Gardens. Due to certain restrictions by the Indian Armed Forces, who own all the land surrounding Fort William, the ground is legally leased to Mohun Bagan AC for their operations. The ground is mostly used as training facilities for the senior football team of Mohun Bagan, but also acts as the home ground in regional tournaments like Calcutta Football League where reserve team participates. The IFA Shield is an annual football competition organized by the Indian Football Association, the football governing body in the Indian state of West Bengal. The IFA came into existence in 1893, and was named after the association. The IFA Shield tournament was started in the same year. It is the third oldest football tournament in India, after Durand Cup and Trades Cup, and is among the oldest football competitions in the world.

Deepak Kumar Mondal is an Indian former professional footballer who played as a centre-back. The 2012–13 Mohun Bagan FC season was the club's 6th season in I-League and 123rd season since its establishment in 1889. The team finished runners-up in the Calcutta Football League and a dismal tenth in the I-League. They were crowned Champions in the Airlines Cup after Mohammedan refused to play the finals and gave a walkover. Mohun Bagan crashed out in the group stage of the Federation Cup and were defeated by arch rivals East Bengal in the semi-finals of the IFA Shield.

The 2013 I-League U20 was the fifth season of the Indian I-League U20 competition. The season took place during the I-League break between February and March. The tournament began on 6 March in Jamshedpur at the facilities which are currently used by Tata Football Academy. The stadiums were officially announced on 29 January 2013 as the JRD Tata Sports Complex and the Gopal Maidan.

Kalyani Stadium is a stadium in Kalyani, West Bengal, India. The stadium holds 20,000 spectators. Currently the stadium is being re-modelled with modern structure and 5-storied gallery with added facilities. It usually hosts matches of I-League and Calcutta Football League.

The 2014–15 I-League U19 is the seventh season of the Indian I-League U19 competition. The season began on 13 December 2014 and concluded on 6 May 2015. AIFF Elite Academy won the trophy for the first time.

The 2015–16 Mohun Bagan FC season was the club's 9th season in I-League and 126th season since its establishment in 1889. During this season, Mohun Bagan started the I-League as the defending champions. The team finished 3rd in the Calcutta Football League and runners-up in the I-League. Mohun Bagan were defeated by Shandong Luneng of China in the preliminary round 2 of the AFC Champions League and were eliminated from the competition at this stage. The 2015–16 I-League U18 is the eighth season of the Indian I-League U18 competition. The season began on 8 October 2015. and on 10 February 2016, AIFF Elite Academy won the title by defeating Tata Football Academy 2–0 in the final. AIFF Elite Academy also remained unbeaten in the tournament.

The 2016–17 Mohun Bagan FC season was the club's 10th season in I-League and 127th season since its establishment in 1889. They finished third in the Calcutta Football League and runners-up in the I-League. Mohun Bagan finished third in group stage of the AFC Cup and ended the season as runners-up of Federation Cup.

The 2016–17 I-League U18 was the ninth season of the Indian I-League U18 and the second season of the competition as an under-18 one. The season began on 15 November with 35 teams divided into eight groups across India. The top 12 teams played in the final group stage in which they were divided into three groups of four and the top team from each group, along with the top second place team, went into the semi-finals, followed by the final. AIFF Elite Academy won the title by defeating East Bengal F.C. in the final.

The 2016–17 season was the East Bengal FC's 97th season in existence. The club had already won the Calcutta Football League and became the runners of 2016 Bordoloi Trophy.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Mohun Bagan Super Giant Reserves and Academy</span> Reserve team and youth system of Mohun Bagan Super Giant

Mohun Bagan Super Giant Reserves and Academy is the reserve team and youth system of the Indian Super League side Mohun Bagan Super Giant. The U-21 and the reserve teams are generally referred to as last stage of progression into the senior squad. The reserve team participates in the Calcutta Football League. Youth teams also participate in the RF Development League and the AIFF Elite League. The concept for a youth team was conceived and materialised under the leadership of Balai Das Chattopadhyay in 1944.

The 2003–04 season was East Bengal Football Club's 8th season in the National Football League, and also marked the club's 84th season. East Bengal successfully defended their league title from the previous season, competing in the 2003-04 NFL. They have also won the 2003 Calcutta Football League and the 2003 ASEAN Club Championship. They became runners-up in the 2003 Super Cup, 2003 Durand Cup and 2003 IFA Shield.

The 2002–03 season is East Bengal Football Club's 7th season in the National Football League, and also marks the club's 83rd season. Coached by Subhash Bhowmick, East Bengal won all five trophies from the five tournaments they participated in, including their second National league title, competing in the 2002–03 NFL. They also won the 2002 Calcutta Football League, 2002 Durand Cup and 2002 IFA Shield and the 2002 Independence Day Cup. This was the third instance in the history of East Bengal club that the club had won 5 trophies in a season, the other two back in 1972 and 1973 during P.K. Banerjee's reign.

The 2005–06 season was East Bengal's 10th season in the National Football League and 86th season in existence.
