Defending champion Roger Federer defeated Andre Agassi in the final, 6–3, 2–6, 7–6(7–1), 6–1 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2005 US Open. It was his second US Open title and sixth major title overall. This was Agassi's last appearance in a major final.
This was the first US Open in which future champions Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka competed in the main draw. Noteworthy in this tournament was a strong performance by American men, despite 2003 champion and former world No. 1 Andy Roddick losing in the first round. Wildcard James Blake reached the quarterfinals, upsetting world No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the third round before losing to Agassi. Robby Ginepri, whose run was enhanced by Roddick's early defeat, reached the semifinals and also lost to Agassi.
This was also the last major tournament for former world No. 6 and French Open champion Albert Costa.
The seeded players are listed below. Roger Federer is the champion; others show the round in which they were eliminated.

Rafael Nadal defeated Mariano Puerta in the final, 6–7(6–8), 6–3, 6–1, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2005 French Open. It was his first major title, the first of a record 14 French Open titles, and the first of a record 22 major men's singles titles overall. Nadal won the French Open on his tournament debut, the first man to do so since Mats Wilander in 1982, and was the youngest champion since Michael Chang in 1989, at 19 years and two days old when he won the title.
Andy Roddick defeated Juan Carlos Ferrero in the final, 6–3, 7–6(7–2), 6–3 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2003 US Open. It was his first and only major title. Roddick remains the most recent American to win the US Open men's singles title, as well as any major men's singles title. Defending champion Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the final, 1–6, 6–1, 6–4, 7–6(7–4), to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2006 French Open. It was his second French Open title and second major title overall. It was the first of three consecutive years Nadal and Federer would contest the French Open final. This marked Federer's first defeat in a major final; he was attempting to complete the career Grand Slam and to become the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to hold all four major titles at once, having won the preceding Wimbledon, US Open and Australian Open titles. The latter feat would ultimately be achieved a decade later by Novak Djokovic, at the same tournament, who here reached the quarterfinals at a major for the first time.
Two-time defending champion Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick in the final, 6–2, 4–6, 7–5, 6–1 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2006 US Open. It was his third US Open title and his ninth major title overall. Federer became the sixth man to reach all four major finals in one calendar year, the second to do so in the Open Era, and the first to do so since Laver in 1969. Also, he reached a record-equalling 10th consecutive major semifinal, after Laver and Ivan Lendl.

Novak Djokovic defeated the defending champion Roger Federer in the final, 7–6(7–2), 2–6, 7–6(7–2) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2007 Canadian Open. With the win, he became the first man to beat the world's top three players in one event since Boris Becker in 1994 in Stockholm, having also defeated Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick en route to the final.
Three-time defending champion Roger Federer defeated Novak Djokovic in the final, 7–6(7–4), 7–6(7–2), 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2007 US Open. It was his fourth consecutive US Open title and 12th major title overall. With the win, Federer marked his third year in which he won three of the four majors. Also, he reached a record-equaling 14th consecutive major quarterfinal, after Roy Emerson and Ivan Lendl. It was Djokovic's maiden major final, and the first of an eventual record 33 major final appearances.
Novak Djokovic defeated Guillermo Cañas in the final, 6–3, 6–2, 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2007 Miami Open. It was his first Masters singles title, and the first of an eventual record 38 Masters titles. He did not lose a single set in the entire tournament.
Rafael Nadal defeated Novak Djokovic in the final, 6–2, 7–5 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2007 Indian Wells Masters. He did not lose a single set in the entire tournament. By reaching the final, Djokovic entered the world's top 10 in rankings for the first time in his career.
Novak Djokovic defeated Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final, 4–6, 6–4, 6–3, 7–6(7–2) to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2008 Australian Open. It was his first major title, the first of a record ten Australian Open titles, and the first of an all-time joint-record 22 major men's singles titles overall. Djokovic became the first Serbian man to win a major singles title. It was the first major final since the 2005 Australian Open not to feature either Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, who were beaten by Djokovic and Tsonga, respectively, in the semifinals. Alongside second-seeded Nadal, Tsonga defeated three more seeds en route to the final, including ninth-seed Andy Murray.
Andy Roddick won the men's singles tennis title at the 2004 Miami Open after Guillermo Coria retired in the final, with the scoreline at 6–7(2–7), 6–3, 6–1.
Rafael Nadal defeated Roger Federer in the final, 7–5, 3–6, 7–6(7–3), 3–6, 6–2 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2009 Australian Open. It was his first Australian Open title and his sixth major title overall. Nadal became the first Spaniard to win the title.

Roger Federer defeated Robin Söderling in the final, 6–1, 7–6(7–1), 6–4 to win the men's singles tennis title at the 2009 French Open. It was his first and his only French Open title and 14th major title overall, completing the career Grand Slam and equaling Pete Sampras' then-record of men's singles major titles. It was Federer's fourth consecutive French Open final, having lost the previous three to Rafael Nadal. Söderling became the first Scandinavian major finalist since Thomas Johansson at the 2002 Australian Open.
Roger Federer defeated Andy Roddick in the final, 5–7, 7–6(8–6), 7–6(7–5), 3–6, 16–14 to win the gentlemen's singles tennis title at the 2009 Wimbledon Championships. It was his sixth Wimbledon title and record-breaking 15th major title overall, passing Pete Sampras' all-time record. It was the longest men's singles major final in history with 77 games, breaking the record of 71 games set at the 1927 Australian Open. The match also had the longest fifth set (16–14) in a major men's singles final, surpassing the 11–9 fifth set in the 1927 French Open final. The match took 4 hours and 17 minutes to complete, and the fifth set alone lasted 95 minutes. It was a repeat of the 2004 and 2005 finals, where Federer also beat Roddick to win the title. This was Federer's 11th grass-court title, surpassing the previous record held by Sampras (10). Notably, Roddick lost despite only having his serve broken once, in the last game of the match. By winning the title, Federer regained the world No. 1 singles ranking.
