Wang Hao won the title in 2009 and was therefore the defending champion. [1] He reached the final where he met fellow Chinese player Zhang Jike.

Contents

Zhang won against Hao 12–10, 11–7, 6–11, 9–11, 11–5, 14–12. This was the first time Zhang appeared in the Men's singles event at the World Championships and thus his first medal in this category. [2]

His records led the International Table Tennis Federation to nickname him "The Dictator" and "The Dragon". Since 2014, he has been the captain of the Chinese national table tennis men's team.

The 2009 World Table Tennis Championships men's doubles was the 50th edition of the men's doubles championship. Wang Hao and Chen Qi won the title after defeating Ma Long and Xu Xin in the final by four sets to one.

The men's singles table tennis event was part of the table tennis programme at the 2012 Summer Olympics in London. The event took place from Saturday 28 July to Thursday 2 August 2012 at ExCeL London. The tournament was a single elimination tournament with a third place playoff played between the two losing semi-finalists. In the 2008 event all three medals were won by Chinese athletes with Ma Lin taking gold.

Zhang Yining won the title in 2009 but has since retired from international table tennis.

The 2011 World Table Tennis Championships men's doubles was the 51st edition of the men's doubles championship.
