The 1952 Winter Olympics, officially known as the VI Olympic Winter Games, took place in Oslo, Norway, from 14 to 25 February 1952. A total of 694 athletes representing 30 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated in the Games, taking part in 22 events from 6 sports.

Maria Helena Saarninée Selin is a Finnish retired ice hockey player. She was a member of the Finnish women's national ice hockey team throughout the 1990s and won a bronze medal at the inaugural Olympic women's ice hockey tournament at the 1998 Winter Olympics. With the national team, she also won bronze at the IIHF Women's World Championship tournaments in 1999 and 2000, and at the 1996 IIHF European Women Championship.

Petra Maria Paulina Vaarakallio is a Finnish retired ice hockey player and ringette player. She played on the women's ice hockey team for Finland at the 1998 Winter Olympics, and won a bronze medal. Vaarakallio scored the first-ever goal in women's ice hockey at the Olympics.

The 1962 World Rowing Championships were the inaugural world championships in rowing. The competition was held in September 1962 on the Rotsee in Lucerne, Switzerland. Rowers from West Germany dominated the competition, winning five of the seven boat classes.
