While Andrei Gag and Filip Mihaljevic were the leaders after the first round, in the second round Tomas Walsh took the lead. Any one of his remaining five throws would have won the competition, with a best of 21.78 on his final attempt. Gag finished second with his first round attempt of 20.89, while Mihaljevic's personal best 20.87 in round 5 saw him finish third.

Teddy Tamgho is a French triple jumper and long jumper. He specialises in the triple jump. He is the current triple jump world indoor record holder at 17.92 m, achieved in winning the final and gold medal at the 2011 European Indoor Championships. He is the world's sixth best ever triple jumper outdoors, with his best mark of 18.04 metres achieved in winning the final and gold medal at the 2013 World Championships.
Ivana Španović is a Serbian long jumper, reigning World indoor champion and reigning European indoor champion. In 2013, she became the first Serbian track and field athlete to win a medal at the IAAF Outdoor World Championships. In 2018, she became the first Serbian track and field athlete to win a world senior gold medal at the IAAF Indoor World Championships. She is the Serbian record holder in the long jump, indoors and outdoors, and also she is the national indoor record holder in the 60 metres and in the pentathlon. Her coach is Goran Obradović and she is a member of the Athletic Club Vojvodina in Novi Sad.
Bohdan Viktorovych Bondarenko is a Ukrainian high jumper. He is the 2013 World champion, 2014 European champion, and 2016 Olympic bronze medalist.
Mutaz Essa Barshim is a Qatari athlete of Sudanese descent who competes in the high jump. He is the national record and Asian record holder with a best mark of 2.43 m. He won a gold medal at the 2017 World Championships in Athletics in London and at the 2019 World Championships in Athletics in Doha. Barshim also won bronze at the London 2012 Summer Olympics, and silver at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio. He was earlier the Asian Indoor and World Junior champion in 2010, and won the high jump gold medals at the 2011 Asian Athletics Championships and 2011 Military World Games.
Christian Taylor is an American track and field athlete who competes in the triple jump and has a personal record of 18.21 m, which ranks 2nd on the all-time list. He is the reigning Olympic champion and current World Champion.
