The 59th New York Film Festival took place from September 24 to October 10, 2021. [1] Unlike the 2020 New York Film Festival, which was staged online due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 festival returned to physical screenings at the Lincoln Center.

Contents

Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth was announced as the opening film [2] with Pedro Almodóvar's Parallel Mothers announced as the closing film. [3] Jane Campion's The Power of the Dog was the festival's centerpiece screening. [4] [5] [6]

The 48th Telluride Film Festival took place from September 2–6, 2021 in Telluride, Colorado, United States. After the cancellation of the previous year's event due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Colorado, the festival required proof of vaccination, a negative COVID-19 test within 72 hours and masks worn indoors to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

The 31st Annual Gotham Awards, presented by the Gotham Film & Media Institute, were held on November 29, 2021. The nominees were announced on October 21, 2021. Actors Peter Dinklage and Kristen Stewart, director Jane Campion, film executive Eamonn Bowles, playwright Kathleen Collins, and the cast of The Harder They Fall all received tribute awards. Collins received her tribute award posthumously.

Ari Wegner, ACS, ASC, is an Australian cinematographer. Her work includes films such as Lady Macbeth (2016), True History of the Kelly Gang (2019), and Zola (2020). In 2021, she served as cinematographer on The Power of the Dog for which she received widespread critical acclaim including an Academy Award nomination for Best Cinematography, becoming only the second woman to do so in the award's 94-year history.

The 56th National Society of Film Critics Awards, given on 8 January 2022, honored the best in film for 2021.

The Room Next Door is a 2024 Spanish drama film written and directed by Pedro Almodóvar in his English-language full-length debut, based on the novel What Are You Going Through by Sigrid Nunez. Tilda Swinton and Julianne Moore star with John Turturro and Alessandro Nivola in supporting roles. The plot follows the relationship between two close friends as the former faces the prospect of ending her life due to terminal illness.

The Tragedy of Macbeth (Soundtrack from the Apple Original Film) is the soundtrack to the 2021 film The Tragedy of Macbeth, directed by Joel Coen in his first sole directorial outing, starring Denzel Washington. The film's orchestral score accompanied the 14-track soundtrack which was composed by Carter Burwell and also featured dialogues spoken by Washington, Frances McDormand, Kathryn Hunter amongst others. Milan Records released the film's soundtrack digitally on December 24, 2021, and physically on January 14, 2022.
