A gubernatorial election was held on North Sumatra on 27 November 2024 alongside other local elections nationwide to elect the Governor of North Sumatra to a five-year term. [2]
The election, like other local elections in 2024, follow the first-past-the-post system where the candidate with the most votes wins the election, even if they do not win a majority. [3] It is possible for a candidate to run uncontested, in which case the candidate is still required to win a majority of votes "against" an "empty box" option. Should the candidate fail to do so, the election will be repeated on a later date. [4]
A political party or coalition of parties must held at least 20 seats in the North Sumatra Regional House of Representatives to be able to field a pair of candidates for Governor and Vice Governor. [5] With 22 and 21 seats each, both Golkar and PDI-P are able to field their own pair of candidates for Governor and Vice Governor without the need to form a coalition of parties. [6] Candidates may alternatively demonstrate support in form of photocopies of identity cards, which in North Sumatra's case corresponds to 814,046 copies. [7] No such candidates registered with the General Elections Commission by the provided deadline. [8]
