The Filmfare Awards South are annual awards that honour artistic and technical excellence in the Telugu cinema, Tamil cinema, Malayalam cinema and Kannada cinema. They are presented by Filmfare magazine of The Times Group. When it was introduced in 1954, the Filmfare Awards initially only recognized achievements in the Hindi cinema. In 1964 the awards were extended to Telugu, Tamil, Bengali and Marathi languages. Malayalam cinema was included in the awards in 1967 and Kannada cinema followed in 1970.

It is given in honor of an actor who has delivered an outstanding performance in a supporting role while working within the Kannada film industry. Although the awards for Kannada films started in 1970, awards for the best supporting actor category started only in 2007. At the 54th Filmfare Awards South ceremony held in 2007, Rangayana Raghu was the first winner of this award for his role in Cyanide. Since its inception, the award has been given to eight actors. Achyuth Kumar has received the most awards in this category with three awards.

At the 54th Filmfare Awards South ceremony held in 2007, Leelavathi was the first winner of this award for his role in Kannadada Kanda.

The Black lady was unveiled by actress Tamannaah Bhatia at a press meet held in Chennai, on 20 June 2013. The awards were announced and distributed at Hyderabad on 20 July 2013. Sundeep Kishan and Chinmayi Sripaada were the honorable anchors of the show with Chinamyi hosting the filmfare the second time.

The 65th Filmfare Awards South ceremony honoring the winners and nominees of the best of South Indian cinema in 2017 was an event that was held on 16 June 2018 at Novotel and HICC Complex in Hyderabad. The nominations for all the main awards were announced on 4 June 2018.
