800 is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language biographical sports film based on the life and career of Sri Lankan international cricketer Muttiah Muralitharan, the highest wicket-taker in the history of cricket. [2] The film is directed by M.S. Sripathy, written by M.S. Sripathy and Shehan Karunatilaka, produced by Movie Train Motion Pictures and Vivek Rangachari, and presented by Sridevi Movies, Sivalenka Krishna Prasad. [3] It stars Madhur Mittal in the lead role. Plot

800 is based on Muthiah Muralidaran’s life, the champion who set the record for taking 800 wickets in Test Cricket. The story captures the many facets of Muralidaran’s life; the tale of an oppressed Tamil and someone who was once called for chucking who championed Sri Lankan Cricket, and went on to become one of the greatest cricketers ever.

It reveals how Murali finds solace in cricket, stands up to bullies, and transforms from an excitable pace bowler into the highest wicket-taker in cricket’s history. It also dives deep into the issue of nationality versus humanity. Murali, being an ethnic Tamil, has to prove his commitment to the Sri Lankan team and fans. The film also gives insight into the tumultuous period surrounding his 'controversial' bowling and how it briefly derailed his cricket career.

Production

The film was originally announced with Vijay Sethupathi starring, and he received criticism. Muralitharan released a statement requesting the actor to drop out, citing he did not want Vijay Sethupathi to "face any kind of trouble". [7] Critics had lamented Muralitharan's neutral stance during the Sri Lankan Civil War and his support for Mahinda Rajapaksa's political party after the conclusion of the war. [8] While Tamil Nadu's political parties also spoke out against the making of the film, supporters of the project stated that Muralitharan's story would be important in telling the untold story of Indian Tamils of Sri Lanka. [9]

Reception

Srinivasa Ramanujan of The Hindu wrote, "Like Murali's reticent and almost-hesitant approach to the sport, the film just touches on many aspects of his life, largely sticking to the facts and thus coming across as just a visual record of the cricketer’s glorious achievements". [10]

Sajesh Mohan of Onmanorama wrote "M S Sripathy, Madhur Mittal, and the '800' team can take pride in the fact that they have narrated the tale of one of cricket's greatest legends, Muttiah Muralitharan, in the best possible manner. That said, the 2 hours and 39 minutes long film feels like a montage of The Magician's life that, at the same time, works for and against the movie." [11]

It was played between Australia and a World XI team of players selected from other countries. The series consisted of three One Day Internationals and one Test match. Australia won all four matches.

The India cricket team toured Sri Lanka between 18 July and 2 September 2001. The two sides played a triangular ODI series also involving New Zealand, following which they played a three-match Test series. The 2008–09 international cricket season was between September 2008 and March 2009. The season saw the security concerns for cricket in Pakistan reach a pinnacle. The ICC Champions Trophy, scheduled to be held in Pakistan in September 2008, was postponed to 2009 after five of the participating nations refused to send their teams for the event. In November 2008, a Pakistani militant group launched terror attacks in Mumbai. This led to India cancelling their tour of Pakistan originally scheduled for January and February 2009. Sri Lanka agreed to tour Pakistan in place of India. However, the tour was jeopardised by a terror attack in Lahore where gunmen fired at a bus carrying the Sri Lankan team, injuring six team members. The Champions Trophy was later relocated to South Africa. No international cricket were played in Pakistan for more than five years. This period of isolation ended when Zimbabwe toured Pakistan in May 2015. After successfully hosting a few T20Is against World-XI, the Sri Lanka cricket team and the West Indians from 2017 to 2018, a few matches of the Pakistan Super League from 2017 to 2019, the whole season in 2020 as well as hosting complete tours against Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi cricket teams respectively during the 2019–20 season, built a good reputation of Pakistan. Hence, by the end of 2019, the Pakistan Cricket Board, announced that they would no longer play any of their future home matches at a neutral venue, indicating that International Cricket has returned to the country on full-time basis.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Warne–Muralitharan Trophy</span> Australia-Sri Lanka cricket award

The Warne–Muralidaran Trophy is awarded to the winner of the Australia–Sri Lanka Test cricket series from 2007–08 season onwards. The trophy is named after the two leading wicket takers in Test cricket, Sri Lanka's Muttiah Muralitharan and Australia's Shane Warne. The trophy celebrates the 25th anniversary of Australia–Sri Lanka Test cricket. The trophy features casts of the two bowlers' right hands and match-used cricket balls bowled by them during their careers. Sri Lanka Cricket, the governing body of cricket in Sri Lanka had written to its Australian counterpart, Cricket Australia, that the winner of the series should be awarded a trophy named after the two bowlers. Cricket Australia had responded positively to the Sri Lankans' proposal. In unveiling the trophy, Cricket Australia said in a statement,

...The two greatest bowlers in world cricket history have lent their names to a perpetual prize that will be played for in the Test series between Australia and Sri Lanka.

The Indian cricket team toured Sri Lanka, playing three Test matches from 18 July to 7 August 2010.

The knockout stage was the second and final stage of the 2011 Cricket World Cup. It featured the top four teams from each group and contested as a single-elimination tournament. This was the first tournament in which a one-over eliminator would be used to decide matches that finished as ties; however, this decider was not required. India and Sri Lanka reached the final, where India chased down Sri Lanka's total of 274 runs for the loss of just four wickets to claim their second Cricket World Cup title.

The 2011 Cricket World Cup Final was the final match of the 2011 Men's Cricket World Cup, the 10th edition of ICC's championship of One Day International (ODI) cricket. The match was played between India and Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Saturday 2 April 2011. It was the first time that two Asian teams had faced each other in an ODI World Cup final. India won the match by six wickets—its second World Cup win after the 1983 tournament—and became the third team to have won the title more than once, after Australia and the West Indies. India became the first country to win the Cricket World Cup in their own country.

The 1996 Singer Cup was a triangular cricket tournament held between 1 and 7 April 1996 in Singapore. The competition featured the national cricket teams of India, Sri Lanka and Pakistan. The tournament was won by Pakistan, which defeated Sri Lanka in the final on 7 April.

The 2007 ICC Awards were held on 10 September 2007 in Johannesburg, South Africa. Previous events were held in London (2004), Sydney (2005) and Mumbai (2006). Having been hosted since 2004, the ICC Awards were now into their fourth year. They were presented in association with the Federation of International Cricketers' Associations (FICA) and honours for Associate Player of the Year were also awarded for the first time. The ICC awards the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy to the Cricketer of the Year, which is considered to be the most prestigious award in world cricket.
