Odesa Oblast is subdivided into districts ( raions ) which are subdivided into territorial communities ( hromadas ).

On 18 July 2020, the number of districts was reduced from 31 to seven (now incorporating also the 5 formerly separate city municipalities). [1] [2] These are:

  1. Berezivka (Березівський район), the center is in the city of Berezivka;
  2. Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi (Білгород-Дністровський район), the center is in the city of Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi;
  3. Bolhrad (Болградський район), the center is in the city of Bolhrad;
  4. Izmail (Ізмаїльський район), the center is in the city of Izmail;
  5. Odesa (Одеський район), the center is in the city of Odesa;
  6. Podilsk (Подільський район), the center is in the city of Podilsk;
  7. Rozdilna (Роздільнянський район), the center is in the city of Rozdilna.

Before July 2020, Odesa Oblast was subdivided into 31 regions: 26 districts ( raions ) and 5 city municipalities (mis'krada or misto), officially known as territories governed by city councils. [3]

The raion was abolished on 18 July 2020 as part of the administrative reform of Ukraine, which reduced the number of raions of Odesa Oblast to seven. The area of Tatarbunary Raion was merged into Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi Raion. The last estimate of the raion population was 38,065.

The area of Ovidiopol Raion was split between Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi and Odesa Raions. The last estimate of the raion population was 77,278 (2015 est.).

One abolished raions, Biliaivka Raion, Biliaivka and Illichivsk municipalities, parts of Lyman and Ovidiopol raions, as well as the cities of Odesa, Teplodar, and Yuzhne, which were previously incorporated as a city of oblast significance, were merged into Odesa Raion.
