Albert Botran i Pahissa (born 14 January 1984) is a Spanish historian and politician from Catalonia and a former member of the Congress of Deputies of Spain. He was previously a member of the Parliament of Catalonia. [1]
Botran was born on 14 January 1984 in Molins de Rei,Catalonia. [2] [3] He has a degree in history and a master's degree in comparative history from the Autonomous University of Barcelona. [2] [3]
Botran has been active in the leftist Catalan independence movement since 2002 and helped found the Molins de Rei branch of Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) in 2007. [3] [4] He was a member of the CUP's national secretariat from 2009 to 2013 and from 2018 to 2019. [2] [3] Botran works for the Òmnium Cultural. [3] [4] In 2010 he won the 24th Francesc Carreras i Candi Award for his work Pensar Històricament els Països Catalans. La Historiografia i el Projecte Nacional dels Països Catalans (1960-1985). Botran contested the 2011 local elections as a Popular Unity Candidacy–Active People (CUP-PA) electoral alliance candidate in Molins de Rei and was elected. [6] [7] Botran was one of the signatories of the October 2014 Nous Temps,Noves Eines - Per la Independència,pel Socialisme,pels Països Catalans:Ni un pas Enrere’, manifesto by leftist Catalan nationalists. [8] [9] The manifesto led to the formation,in November 2014,of Poble Lliure of which Botran is a member. [3] [4] [10] He did not seek re-election at the 2015 local elections. [11]
Botran contested the 2015 regional election as a CUP candidate in the Province of Barcelona and was elected to the Parliament of Catalonia. [12] [13] In February 2017 Botran attended an event in Castellóde Farfanya marking the 30th death anniversary of Catalan independence activist JuliàBabia,a member of the Movement for Defence of the Land. [14] [15] As a consequence,in September 2017 the Spanish Attorney General started an investigation on charges of extolling terrorism against four members of Poble Lliure:Botran,Toni Casserras,Ferran Dalmau and Guillem Fuster. [16] [17] In December 2018 the Audiencia Nacional started investigating the case against the four and three others - Marcel·líCanet,Marcel Casellas and Josep Maria Cervelló. [18]
At the 2017 regional election Botran was placed 81st on CUP's list of candidates in the Province of Barcelona but the party only won three seats in the province and as a result he failed to get re-elected. [19] [20] He contested the 2019 November general election as a Popular Unity Candidacy–For Rupture candidate in the Province of Barcelona and was elected to the Congress of Deputies. [21] [22] In 2023 general elections he wasn't reelected.

"Els Segadors" is the official national anthem of Catalonia, nationality and autonomous community of Spain.
Terra Lliure, sometimes referred to as TLL, was a Catalan nationalist far-left Marxist-Leninist paramilitary group. Formed in 1978, the group carried out hundreds of attacks that left many people injured and five dead.
The Popular Unity Candidacy is a left-wing to far-left pro-Catalan independence political party active primarily in Catalonia, where it has political representation, but also in other autonomous communities in Spain it considers to be part of the Catalan Countries. The CUP traditionally has focused on municipal politics, and is made up of a series of autonomous candidatures that run in local elections. Its presence is strongest within the borders of Catalonia.

La Forja - Jovent Revolucionari is a left-wing Catalan independence youth organization that is active in all the Catalan Countries. La Forja is part of the Popular Unity Candidacy–Constituent Call (CUP-CC) coalition and has very close ties with the political party Poble Lliure.
The Free Catalan Territory are those declared municipalities or regions of Catalonia that had approved a motion in a plenary session by the councillors of the town or the region council, as they represent the municipality's local authority. Such motions declare that Spanish laws and regulations are considered provisional, waiting for the Government and Parliament of Catalonia to enact new Catalan laws after having assumed national sovereignty, and therefore turning Catalonia into an independent state.
The 2015 Catalan regional election was held on Sunday, 27 September 2015, electing the 11th Parliament of the autonomous community of Catalonia. All 135 seats in the Parliament were up for election. This was the third regional Catalan election in only five years, after the 2010 and 2012 elections and the first one in over 37 years in which Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC) and Democratic Union of Catalonia (UDC) ran separately, after the dissolution of Convergence and Union (CiU) in June 2015 over disagreements on the coalition's separatist turn.
Democrats of Catalonia is a Christian-democratic, pro-Catalan independence political party in Catalonia founded in July 2015 from a split in Democratic Union of Catalonia (UDC). Its members included the then-Speaker of the Catalan parliament Núria de Gispert and former UDC president Joan Rigol. The party has received accusations of xenophobia for its controversial statements against Spaniards and for having ties with xenophobic organizations.
Junts pel Sí was a Catalan electoral, political and parliamentary alliance focused on achieving the independence of Catalonia from Spain. Established ahead of the 2015 Catalan regional election, it was formed by Democratic Convergence of Catalonia (CDC), Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC), Democrats of Catalonia (DC), Left Movement (MES) and Independence Rally (RI.cat), as well as a number of independent personalities from pro-independence sectors of civil society, including the pro-independence organizations Catalan National Assembly, Òmnium and the Association of Municipalities for Independence. The Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP) had been invited to participate in the alliance, but refused to do so and ran on its own instead, citing its disagreement with the presence of politicians in the list.
Left Movement of Catalonia is a social-democratic, pro-independence political party in Catalonia. The party was founded in November 2014 from the merger of New Catalan Left (NECat) and Catalonia Movement, which had both been formed by dissident members of the Socialists' Party of Catalonia (PSC) who were dissatisfied with what they saw as the party's lack of support for the independence movement. Its founders included Marina Geli and Ernest Maragall (NECat), but both have ever since left for other parties—Geli joined the Together for Catalonia alliance ahead of the 2017 Catalan regional election, whereas Maragall defected to Republican Left of Catalonia (ERC) in 2018.
The Greens–Green Alternative is a political party based in Catalonia, founded in September 1999 by former members of The Greens–Ecologist Confederation of Catalonia (EV–CEC), after the party had split in March 1998 over the type of relationship to establish with the newly-autonomous Initiative for Catalonia (IC).

Joaquim Torra i Pla, known as Quim Torra, is a Catalan lawyer and journalist from Spain. He served as President of the Government of Catalonia from 17 May 2018 to 28 September 2020, when the Supreme Court of Spain confirmed a court ruling by the High Court of Justice of Catalonia condemning him for disobeying the Central Electoral Board during the April 2019 general election, leading to his disqualification from office.
