The All Bengal Teachers Association (ABTA) is a trade union of teachers in Indian state of West Bengal. [1]
ABTA was founded under the leadership of Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy on 6 February 1921. It was the first such association of teachers in Asia. [2]
Following the independence of India, ABTA's structure was reformed in 1952. The union also underwent several splits, with the Headmasters' Association and the West Bengal Teachers' Association being the first to leave the union. [1]
Satyapriya Roy was its general secretary from 1953 to 1964.
In early 2022, ABTA protested an alleged plan by the government of West Bengal to run education in the state as a public–private partnership. [3] [4]
Jadavpur University is a public state university with its main campus located in Jadavpur, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It was established in 1906 as Bengal Technical Institute and was converted into Jadavpur University in 1955. Medical College, Kolkata, also known as Calcutta Medical College, is a public medical college and hospital located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. It is one of the oldest existing hospitals in Asia. The institute was established on 28 January 1835 by Lord William Bentinck during British Raj as Medical College, Bengal. It is the second oldest medical college to teach Western medicine in Asia after Ecole de Médicine de Pondichéry and the first institute to teach in English language. The college offers MBBS degree after five and a half years of medical training.
Durgapur is a major industrial city and a planned tier-II urban agglomeration in the Indian state of West Bengal. Located in Paschim Bardhaman district, it is the third most important city and urban agglomeration in West Bengal after Kolkata and Siliguri and the most important industrial hub of West Bengal. It was planned by two American architects, Joseph Allen Stein and Benjamin Polk in 1955. Durgapur is the only city in eastern India to have an operational dry dock. Hare School is one of the oldest schools in Kolkata, India, teaching grades one to twelve under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education and the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education. It is a state government-administered boys school and was established by the Scottish watch-maker, David Hare. The establishment date is not agreed upon, but the official year of establishment is 1818. Thus the school is declared as the oldest western type school in Asia. The school is situated opposite the Presidency University, and is also adjacent to the University of Calcutta and Hindu School. The combined campuses of the Hare School and Presidency College is one of the largest in Kolkata.

The Jalpaiguri Government Engineering College, abbreviated as JGEC, is an autonomous college, owned fully by Government of West Bengal, and affiliated to Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology. The courses conducted by JGEC have the approval of the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE), and accredited by the National Board of Accreditation (NBA). JGEC is also a NAAC accredited institute. JGEC is a premier institute of technical education in West Bengal, established in the year 1961.

They are a group of 25 interdisciplinary technology-based-engineering research institutions in India which are focused on information technology. Baba Saheb Ambedkar Education University, formerly known as West Bengal University of Teachers' Training, Education Planning and Administration (WBUTTEPA), was established by an Act of the West Bengal legislature published in the Kolkata Gazette, Extraordinary, 16 January 2015. This is the first university in India set up by any State Government exclusively for training teachers. The university was established in 2015 and Prof. Mita Banerjee became the first Vice Chancellor. It offers different teacher's training courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level. The courses are approved by National Council for Teacher Education. It has 200 teachers' training colleges affiliated to its jurisdiction and its horizon encompasses the entire state of West Bengal.
The National Education Mission is an overarching programme for the school education sector extending from pre-school to class 12, launched in 2018. It was allocated a budget of ₹385.72 billion (US$4.8 billion) in the 2019 Interim Union Budget of India. The stated mission comprises four schemes, namely Saakshar Bharat, Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan, Rashtriya Madhyamik Shiksha Abhiyan and the Centrally Sponsored Scheme on Teacher Education (CSSTE). In 2021, the NIPUN Bharat Mission was launched as part of Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan, teaching literacy and numeracy skills in universities by Grade 3.

Satyapriya Roy (1907–1978) was a politician belonging to the Communist Party of India (Marxist). A prominent leader of the teacher's movement. He was the General Secretary of the All Bengal Teachers Association from 1953 to 1964. He was the education minister in the West Bengal Government during the second Mukherjee ministry.
