Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC), is a union for film producers in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, based in Chennai. Formed on 18 July 1979, the group has a charitable trust fund to provide financial support to retired producers, voiced support for film producers and have collectively protested for socio-political issues. Elections in the Producers council, which is made up of over 1500 members, are held once every two years to determine the president of the group. Actor-producer Vishal has been elected as the President of the Producers council after he won the election held in April 2017. [2] [3] [4] [5] On 25 December 2018, R. Parthiepan was appointed as the new Vice President of the Tamil Film Producers Council replacing RK SURESH and kathireasan who were jointly holding the position until 24 December 2018. [6]

History

2017 - present

Election for new office bearers was held on 2 April 2017 at Kandasamy Naidu College in Anna Nagar, conducted by election officer S. Rajeshwaran, a retired judge. [7] [8] To contest in the election, Vishal formed a new team called "Namma Ani". Main administrators of Namma Ani are Vishal, K. E. Gnanavel Raja, S R Prabhu, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Mysskin and Prakash Raj. [9] Namma Ani is formed mainly due to improve the present business model. The team contested in the elections and won the same. [10] [11] Upon winning, the new team is planning to organise a fund raiser music concert to be conducted by Ilayaraja. [12] [13]

In April 2017, Vishal and his team has announced film production strike from 30 May 2017, if state and central Governments are not taking any actions against piracy. [14] Theatre owners association is supporting this strike against piracy. [15] Later the strike was called off. [16] Opposing the non-clarity of state government entertainment tax after the implementation of central government GST, Tamil Nadu Theater Owners Association, has announced the closure of cinemas starting from 3 July 2017. [17] [18] [19] TFPC has declared his non-support for that strike and urges state government to come up with the solution at the earliest. [20] Also TFPC has requested central government to move regional cinemas from top GST slab to lower GST slab in order to compete with high budget Hollywood films. [21] As there's no decision made by Government, theatre owners strike has been prolonged until 5 July 2017. [22] The strike has been called off and the cinemas started playing the movies starting Friday 7 July 2017. [23] [24] [25] [26] Government has formed a committee to decide on the existence of state's 30% entertainment tax. Its reported that, per day business loss during the strike was around ₹ 20 crores.

In July 2017, TFPC decided to break the exclusivity of them to work only with employees from FEFSI, so they announced that they will be working with both FEFSI members and non-FEFSI members. Though TFPC has signed exclusivity with FEFSI, FEFSI has not signed any exclusivity with TFPC, hence FEFSI members can work with TFPC producers and also with other languages producers and ad film makers. TFPC's another agenda is, to regulate the excessive travel per-diem and the mandatory clauses to employ minimum a certain number of employees from FEFSI to film any particular scene of a movie. Office bearers are President Kalaipuli S Thanu, vice presidents S. Kathiresan, P.L. Thenappan, general secretaries T. Siva, R Radhakrishnan and treasurer T. G. Thiagarajan. [29]

2019

Tamil Nadu government issued show-cause notice to the office bearers of Tamil Film Producers Council, seeking explanation for allegedly mishandling of the council's funds. [30]

Vishal Krishna Reddy, professionally known as Vishal, is an Indian actor and producer who works in Tamil films. Born to film producer G. K. Reddy, Vishal is known for his roles in action films. He also produces films under his production company, Vishal Film Factory. Vishal was conferred with the Kalaimamani award in 2006, for his contributions to Tamil cinema.

Tamil Nadu State Film Awards were given for excellence in Tamil cinema in India. They were given annually to honour the best talents and provide encouragement and incentive to the South Indian film industry by the Government of Tamil Nadu. The awards were decided by a committee headed by a Judge. The awards were first given in 1967 and discontinued after 1970. The awards were given again in 1977 and continued till 1982. The awards were not given in the years 1971 to 1976. However, in the year 1977, the awards for Best Actress and Best Actor were announced for the years 1971 to 1976 by way of honorary certificates by the government led by the then chief minister M.G.Ramachandran. Since 1988, the awards were regularly given until it became defunct in 2008.

Immanuel Vasanth Dinakaran, better known as D. Imman, is an Indian film composer and singer, predominantly working in Tamil cinema. Also worked in Kannada, Malayalam, Telugu, and Hindi film industry. His first film as music director was Thamizhan in 2002. Since then he has composed music for more than 100 films. Formed in 1952, the group has a charitable trust fund to provide pensions to retired actors, voice support for actors caught in controversy, and have collectively protested socio-political issues.

Madras Rajagopalan Radhakrishnan Ravi is an Indian actor and politician who played supporting roles throughout his career. He is the son of actor M. R. Radha and the uncle of Vasu Vikram and half-brother of Raadhika. He is a former chief member of the Tamil Nadu Film Artistes' Association. Raman Abdullah is a 1997 Indian Tamil-language comedy film written, directed, photographed and edited by Balu Mahendra. The film stars Sivakumar, Karan and Vignesh. It is a remake of the 1994 Malayalam film Malappuram Haji Mahanaya Joji. The film was released on 22 August 1997, and failed at the box office.

He is also a partner in Potential Studios, which is another film production company. S. R. Prabhu is a relative of the veteran actor Sivakumar and cousin of actors Suriya and Karthi.

The Film Employees Federation of South India (FEFSI) is an Indian organisation consisting of technicians from the Tamil film industry in Tamil Nadu, India. A total of 23 unions belonging to different trades in the film and television industry are affiliated to the FEFSI that has around 25,000 members.

<i>Mersal</i> (film) 2017 film directed by Atlee

Mersal (transl. Zapped) is a 2017 Indian Tamil-language action thriller film directed by Atlee who co-wrote the film with V. Vijayendra Prasad and S. Ramana Girivasan. Produced by Thenandal Studio Limited in the studio's hundredth feature film production, the film stars Vijay in a triple role with S. J. Suryah while Sathyaraj, Vadivelu, Nithya Menen, Kajal Aggarwal, Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Hareesh Peradi, Kovai Sarala and Sathyan appear in pivotal supporting roles. The story revolves around two brothers, who were separated at birth; one is a magician avenging his parents's deaths and medical crimes, and the other, a reputed doctor who charges meagre amounts from his patients.

The delay in establishing a Cauvery Management Board in order to share equal river share award has sparked off protests in Tamil Nadu against the Karnataka state government.

<i>Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu</i> 2022 film directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon

Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu,, also known as Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu Part I: The Kindling, is a 2022 Indian Tamil-language neo-noir gangster film directed by Gautham Vasudev Menon and written by B. Jeyamohan. It is produced by Ishari K. Ganesh. The film stars Silambarasan and Siddhi Idnani with Raadhika Sarathkumar, Neeraj Madhav and Siddique in supporting roles. The film score and soundtrack is composed by A. R. Rahman.

The 2014 Tamil film Lingaa, despite being one of the highest-grossing Tamil films of the year, was considered a box-office bomb due to the high production and distribution costs involved. The distributors faced huge losses and asked for their money back, with few of them submitted petitions to go on a hunger strike to protest against the losses incurred. Many of them claimed that the film had incurred only 30 percent of the down payment after 25 days of its release. Rajinikanth later refunded one-third of the ₹33 crore (US$4.1 million) loss reportedly incurred by distributors and exhibitors. He decided to pay them ₹10 crore (US$1.3 million) 'on a humanitarian basis', who demanded a full refund and had threatened a "begging protest" in front of the actor's residence.

The 2017 Indian film Mersal was subjected to several controversial issues. The first of this kind was the title naming issue, where a lawsuit was filed against the producers for using the title for promotions. The release further faced complications following the Tamil Film Producers Council's strike following the double taxation issue; protesting against the 10% entertainment tax additionally over the 28% GST, with the last minute denial of censorship, after Animal Welfare Board of India denied NOC over the usage of few animals without their permission. Upon release, the film was criticised by several organisations including the Bharatiya Janata Party and the then ruling AIADMK government objected to scenes featuring Vijay criticising the recently introduced Goods and Services Tax, and another scene in which a character ridicules the Digital India initiative. The party demanded that those scenes must be removed from future viewership. The Indian Medical Association and several other medical associations called for a boycott on the film, following their criticism over the alleged cynical portrayal of doctors working in government-operated hospitals. Several opposition parties and the film fraternity of India condemned the actions instructed by political organisations as a critical attack on freedom of speech in India.
