Amara fusca, sometimes known as the wormwood moonshiner, is a species of ground beetles in the family Carabidae.

Discovery

The species was re-discovered in West Suffolk on September 6, 1993. They can also be found in Crymlyn Burrows on the Glamorgan coast. Before this the species have not been seen in Britain since 1942. [1]

Description

The colour of the beetle is black.

Habitat

The species lives in a vegetated, and dry soil. It also can be found in sandy and gravelly soil, such as headlands and sand dunes. The larva is a predator. Adult beetles prefer the seeds of Artemisia campestris. [2] The species are common in autumn, usually from 6 September to 13 October. Sometimes they might appear from 15 May to 14 June. [3]

They are more diverse in the temperate region although a few tropical endemics are known. Both subfamilies feed on decaying organic matter such as dead animals. The subfamilies differ in which uses parental care and which types of carcasses they prefer. Lactarius deterrimus, also known as false saffron milkcap or orange milkcap, is a species of fungus in the family Russulaceae. The fungus produces medium-sized fruit bodies (mushrooms) with orangish caps up to 12 centimetres wide that develop green spots in old age or if injured. Its orange-coloured latex stains maroon within 30 minutes. Lactarius deterrimus is a mycorrhizal fungus that associates with Norway spruce and bearberry. The species is distributed in Europe, but has also found in parts of Asia. A visually similar species in the United States and Mexico is not closely related to the European species. Fruit bodies appear between late June and November, usually in spruce forests. Although the fungus is edible—like all Lactarius mushrooms from the section Deliciosi—its taste is often bitter, and it is not highly valued.
