Anugerah Industri Muzik (literally: "Music Industry Award"), commonly known by the acronym AIM, is the award ceremony to honour the Malaysian music industry. The award is organised by Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) and was first held on 15 December 1993. It is Malaysia's equivalent of the Grammy awards. [1] [2] The award is not only focused on Malay-language music produced in Malaysia, but also English, Chinese and Indian language music as well, in which separate awards were introduced for the latter two language music subcategories in 1999 and 2013 respectively. (The former ceremony, known as the AIM Chinese Music Awards, had been held in 1999 and 2001 before encountering a twelve-year hiatus due to insufficient funds. [3] )

Some categories may have been replaced and/or removed. In the first award in 1993, there are only ten categories. After the first award, Best New Artist (Solo) was split into male and female categories, until 1999. There is also a Best New Artist (Group) category until 1999. Genre-specific best albums are introduced in 1995 and was abolished in 2010 due to declining number of albums released. The focus on Best Vocal Performance was changed from album to single in 2009. Best Indonesian Album category was introduced in 1997, and was replaced by Best Malay Song Performed by a Foreign Artist in 2008 until 2013/2014. RIM has added five new categories that recognizes the achievement of songs and music videos based on digital sales on all digital platforms. This new awards recognise significant contributions by record labels in the local music industry ecosystem and provide opportunities to the public to be the jury through the new category, Best Malaysian Singer. Best songs according to genres

A nasheed is a work of vocal music that is either sung acappella or accompanied by percussion instruments such as the daf. In general, Islamic anasheed do not contain lamellaphone instruments, string instruments, or wind and brass instruments, although digital remastering – either to mimic percussion instruments or create overtones – is permitted. This is because many Muslim scholars state that Islam prohibits the use of musical instruments except for some basic percussion.

Notes

  1. In 2011, the Best Song was originally given to Penakut by Yuna. However, the announcement was later found out to be a technical error on behalf of the awards' official external auditor, Ernst & Young. The co-manager for the award, Rosmin Hashim, had explained that the winner of the Best Song award has to be selected from by the most voted of five song entries in each of four subcategories: Best Pop Song, Best Rock Song, Best Ethic Pop Song and Best Nasyid Song, in which Penakut did not won in any of them. The award was later given instead to Sedetik Lebih by Anuar Zain. [8]
