Areal Technology, Inc., was an American hard disk drive manufacturer active from 1987 to 1999. The company was the first to produce hard drives employing glass as the substrate for their platters, allowing for significantly higher data densities and greater shock resistance. Other hard drives manufacturers across the board soon followed suit with this approach. [2] [3] In 1993, Areal was sold to Tomen Electronics and Sanyo, who operated the company as a joint venture. Areal continued as a subsidiary until 1999.

Foundation (1987–1988)

Areal Technology was founded by Jack Swartz in late 1987. [4] Swartz had previously co-founded Maxtor Corporation, one of the largest hard drive manufacturers in the world, in 1982, before leaving them in mid-1987 amid an executive shakeup at the company. [4] [5] Several other veterans of the hard drive industry, including top executives from Maxtor, soon followed Swartz to Areal. [4] [6] Arena's set up their original headquarters in Santa Clara, California. [7] In March 1988, the company set up a research and development office in Tucson, Arizona. [8] In fall 1988, the company opened up their first production facility in Point Arena, California, within a 10,000-square-foot building formerly occupied by the Arena Bowl bowling alley. [9] [10]

Areal's first products were announced in October 1988. They consisted of the BP-50 and the BP-100, 3.5-inch-diameter hard disk drives storing 50 MB and 100 MB of data, respectively. [11] These were the first announced hard drives employing specialized ultra-flat glass as the substrate for their platters. [12] [6] The use of glass allows for much higher data densities and greater shock resistance than those of disks using aluminum as the substrate, which was the industry standard at the time. [5] [6] [13] Areal's main supplier of glass was Hoya Optics, a U.S.-based subsidiary of the Japanese Hoya Corporation which had recently opened a glass factory in the United States for worldwide production. [14] Areal was additionally the first company to build major internal components of their drives using polycarbonate plastic in order to save weight, as their targeted clientele were portable makers. [15] [11] These parts included the actuator arm, the top cover, and the base plate. GE Plastics developed a special blend of their Lexan resin specifically for Areal. [15]

Japanese investors and ouster (1988–1990)

In December 1988, Areal received a multi-million-dollar capital injection from Nippon Sheet Glass (NSG) and Tokyo Boeki. [8] [14] The two companies received a minority stake in the Areal as a result of their capital infusion. [14] The following April, Areal leased 35,000-square-foot of office space for another research and development facility. [16] The company employed 42 people total in November 1989. [17] Between the end of 1988 and the middle of 1990, Areal had received roughly $7.5 million in funding from their Japanese investors, which now also included Toyo Menka Kaisha and Tomen Electronics. Areal ended their relationship with Hoya in the middle of 1990, switching to NSG as a glass supplier. [18]

Despite the capital investment and multiple hiring rounds at the company's Point Arena plant, Areal's 3.5-inch hard drive products were met with multiple delays owing to recurring bugs in the designs of the drives' logic board; and difficulty in bringing the cost of manufacturing down by reducing the number of assembly steps. [19] In addition, Areal's Japanese investors pressured the company into entering the nascent market for 2.5-inch-diameter drives, to the chagrin of Kirby, who saw the most potential returns in the well-established 3.5-inch-diameter drive market. [18] Areal relented to the Japanese investors' demands and announced the MicroDrive (MD) line of 2.5-inch glass hard drives in fall 1989, with a trio of drives measuring between 49 MB and 100 MB. [20] [21] Meanwhile, the delays in the 3.5-inch product led to deadlines being missed for all of their contracts with computer systems manufacturers to provide the latter with production samples and preparatory design materials. [1] [22] A clash between the Japanese investors and Swartz over the direction of the company led to the latter's ouster in July 1990. [18] Swartz's CEO position was filled by Mike Kirby, while Steve Drexler (an early Areal employee) succeeded Swartz as chairman. [1] Kirby terminated all further work on 3.5-inch drives, in favor of developing 2.5-inch drives. [22] By this point, the company had only 25 employees. [1]

Market introduction (1990–1991)

In November 1990, Sanyo announced as part of separate agreements that they had given Areal $7 million in equity infusion and inked a deal to with Areal produce to produce their MD-2000 series of disk drives in volume quantities. [23] [24] The first product in the line, the MD-2060, was capable of storing 60 MB on a single glass platter, with two read heads for each side of the platter. It was introduced in late November 1990 in evaluation quantities, these samples manufactured by Areal's employees in Point Area. [25] Areal by December 1990 had 60 employees total. [26]

Sanyo began producing the MD-2060 in volume quantities in February 1991, after Areal had received their first large contract from Disk Technologies Corporation of Florida worth $4 million in December 1990. [27] [28] [26] The MD-2060 was the first hard drive made with glass platters available on the market, narrowly beating out Toshiba with their 40-MB MK-1122FC, made with glass platters and produced in volume beginning in April 1991. [2] [29] [3] Toshiba's factories were able to produce much more than Sanyo's, with the former producing in excess of 1,000 units per month. [2] Toshiba themselves outfitted their laptops with Areal's drives in the same year, however, due to their higher capacity. [13] Areal reached peak employment of 105 workers in February 1991. [17]

Expansion (1991–1993)

In October 1991, Areal introduced their flagship A-Series 2.5-inch drives with the A180 and the A120. [30] The A180 was the highest-capacity 2.5-inch drive to that date, with 180 MB of capacity across two platters. [31] [32] In 1991, Areal signed on Wearnes Technology of Singapore as a second source of their hard drives. [32]

Areal branched out from the OEM market in May 1992 and began selling to customers directly with the E-Series of external drives. Drives in the E-Series plugged directly to a computer's parallel port, with a passthrough port on the rear to allow other parallel-port devices such as printers to work with the system in tandem. [33] In November 1992, they announced the AA9180 disk array, composed of nine 2.5-inch, 180-MB hard drives occupying the footprint of one 5.25-inch server drive bay, for a total of 1.2 GB of storage. Areal built the AA9180 with a logic board allowing for different RAID configurations, including RAID 5. [34]

Acquisition and decline (1993–1999)

In 1992, Areal achieved sales of nearly US$44 million, with roughly 150,000 drives shipped that year. [35] In January 1993, Tomen and Sanyo acquired a majority stake in Areal for $3 million, effectively buying out the company and placing it under Japanese control. [36] [35] Areal continued as a subsidiary under their joint venture, with employment number dwindling to just under 100 workers by June 1993. [17]

Areal produced their last hard drives in 1995. The company's apex was the A1080, a 2.5-inch drive with a 1.08 GB capacity. [37] [38] Areal operated as a holding company into 1997, with Mitsuhiro Naoe serving as the company's chairman. [39] In March 1999, however, Areal filed its certificate of dissolution, ending the company for good. [40]

In 1953, IBM recognized the immediate application for what it termed a "Random Access File" having high capacity and rapid random access at a relatively low cost. After considering technologies such as wire matrices, rod arrays, drums, drum arrays, etc., the engineers at IBM's San Jose California laboratory invented the hard disk drive. The disk drive created a new level in the computer data hierarchy, then termed Random Access Storage but today known as secondary storage, less expensive and slower than main memory but faster and more expensive than tape drives.

Irwin Magnetic Systems, Inc., also known as Irwin Magnetics, was a computer storage manufacturer active from 1979 to 1989 and based in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was founded by Samuel Irwin in 1979 as Irwin International, Inc. The company's primary export was magnetic tape data storage and backup systems for personal computers. Irwin was one of the first companies to manufacture quarter-inch cartridge (QIC) systems for the personal computer market. In 1989, the company was acquired by Cipher Data Products.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">HP OmniBook</span> Line of laptop computers

OmniBook is a line of laptop computers developed and sold by HP Inc. since 2024. It is the single brand for all consumer-oriented laptops by the company, replacing the Spectre, Envy, Pavilion and Essential lines. A previous business-oriented line also known as OmniBook was marketed by HP Inc.'s predecessor, Hewlett-Packard Company, between 1993 and 2002.

The MBC-550 series, also known as the MBC-550/555, is a series of personal computers sold by Sanyo. It was unveiled at the COMDEX/Spring '83 in April 1983 and first released to market in March 1984. All models in the MBC-550 series featured pizza-box-style cases and Intel 8088 microprocessors and run versions of MS-DOS. On its release in 1984, the MBC-550 was the least expensive IBM PC compatible released to date, at a price of US$995. The MBC-550 series followed Sanyo's MBC-1000 line of CP/M computers.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sharp PC-4500</span> 1987 laptop computer by Sharp Electronics

The Sharp PC-4500 is a line of laptop computers released by Sharp Corporation in 1987. The line comprises the PC-4501, the PC-4502, and the PC-4521. The PC-4501 is a bare-bones unit with only 256 KB of RAM stock, only one floppy drive, no backlighting, and no built-in numeric keypad; the PC-4502 and PC-4521 bumps the stock RAM to 640 KB and includes the latter two features while providing either two floppy drive (PC-4502) or one floppy drive and a 20 MB hard drive (PC-4521). Prices on the line initially ranged from $1,295 to just under $3,000; the PC-4501 was later sold for $995, becoming one of the first sub-$1,000 laptops available on the market. The PC-4500 line received mixed, mostly positive, reviews on its release in September 1987.

The Personal System/2 Model 55 SX is a midrange desktop computer in IBM's Personal System/2 (PS/2) family of personal computers. First released in May 1989, the Model 55 SX features an Intel 386SX processor running at a clock speed of 16 MHz. In October 1990, IBM introduced a diskless workstation version of the Model 55 SX, called the Personal System/2 Model 55 LS. The Model 55 SX was the best-ever selling computer in the PS/2 range, accounting for 23 percent of IBM's PC sales within four months of its introduction. By 1991, the PS/2 Model 55 SX was the best-selling x86-based PC in the world.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">IBM PS/2 Model 60</span> 1987 IBM desktop computer

The Personal System/2 Model 60 is a high-end desktop computer in IBM's Personal System/2 (PS/2) family of personal computers. First released in April 1987, the Model 60 features an Intel 80286 processor running at a clock speed of 10 MHz, the same as its midrange counterpart, the Personal System/2 Model 50. Unlike the Model 50, the Model 60 was built into a tower case and featured four more 16-bit MCA expansion slots and an additional drive bay. The Model 60 was IBM's first Intel-based PC built into a tower form factor and was influential in popularizing towers in computer case design.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">IBM PS/2 Model 70</span>

The Personal System/2 Model 70 386 and Personal System/2 Model 70 486 are midrange desktop computers in IBM's Personal System/2 (PS/2) family of personal computers. The PS/2 Model 70 386, released in June 1988, features an Intel 386 microprocessor clocked between 16 MHz and 25 MHz and features the 32-bit Micro Channel architecture (MCA) bus; the Model 70 486, released in December 1989, features the Intel 486 clocked at 25 MHz and also includes the 32-bit MCA bus. The latter is essentially a Model 70 386 with the 486/25 Power Platform pre-installed; this was a CPU upgrade card for the Model 70 386 released earlier in October 1989 that was the first commercially available product to use the 486 processor. Both editions of Model 70 are housed in the same case as the earlier PS/2 Model 50 from 1987.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">IBM PS/2 Model 80</span> 1987 IBM desktop computer

The Personal System/2 Model 80 is a high-end desktop computer in IBM's Personal System/2 (PS/2) family of personal computers. First released in July 1987, the Model 80 features the 32-bit Intel 386 processor running at a clock speed of 16 MHz. The Model 80 was built into a tower case, the same one as its 16-bit counterpart the PS/2 Model 60. It has several 32-bit MCA expansion slots—the only PS/2 model to include such slots at the time of its release—and between five to six drive bays. The PS/2 Model 80 was the highest-end PS/2 in the original 1987 line-up and was IBM's first PC based on the 386 processor. The Model 80 received several updates over the course of its lifespan, increasing the computer's hard drive capacity as well as the clock speed of its processor and the maximum supported RAM. IBM discontinued the Model 80 in 1992.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Compaq LTE (1st generation)</span>

The LTE, LTE/286, and LTE/386s were a series of notebook-sized laptops manufactured by Compaq from 1989 to 1992. The three laptops comprise the first generation of the LTE line, which was Compaq's second attempt at a laptop following the SLT in 1988 and their first attempt at a truly lightweight portable computer. The LTE line proved highly popular—Compaq selling hundreds of thousands of units between the three—and gave way to successive generations of the line, including the LTE Lite, the LTE Elite, and the LTE 5000 series. With its use of industry-standard floppy and hard drive technologies, the LTE was the first commercially successful IBM PC–compatible notebook and helped launch the fledgling PC notebook industry, which had seen earlier attempts fail due to the use of novel but nonstandard data storage.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Data General Walkabout</span>

The Walkabout is a family of notebook-sized laptops introduced by Data General in 1989 and discontinued in 1993. The first entry in the line, simply named the Walkabout, was a battery-powered portable terminal capable of emulating multiple protocols; as well, it contains a rudimentary word processor, an autodialer utility for placing phone calls, and a real-time clock display and timer application for setting reminders. The successor to the first model, the Walkabout/SX, released in 1990, was an architectural redesign allowing the laptop to be used as a general-purpose IBM PC compatible. The penultimate entry, the Walkabout/320, increased its predecessor's i386SX processor clock speed from 16 MHz to 20 MHz, while the last entry in the line, the Walkabout/386SL, replaced the processor with Intel's portable-centric i386SL processor clocked at 25 MHz.

Jonos International, Inc., originally Jonos, Ltd. (JL), later Netcom Research, Inc., was an American computer company active from 1980 to 1992. The company sold a variety of computer hardware products and systems, including STD Bus peripherals, smart terminals, microcomputers, and portable computers. The company's Courier portable computer was the first microcomputer sold with Sony's then-new 3.5-inch floppy disk drives on its release in June 1982. Jonos' systems were widely used in the fields of construction, roadworks, machining, and military.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Intégral Peripherals</span>

Intégral Peripherals, Inc., or simply Intégral, was an American computer hardware company based in Boulder, Colorado, and active from 1990 to 1998. It was the first company to manufacture hard disk drives with a platter diameter of 1.8 inches, smaller than the typical 2.5-inch hard drives used in laptops and other mobile devices. Initially met with market skepticism, Intégral found success in the mid-1990s with design wins in products by IBM, Hewlett-Packard, and Toshiba, among others. However, its investors dropping out of the company amid the 1997 Asian financial crisis caused the company to file bankruptcy in 1998, after which it was acquired by private equity firm H&Q Asia Pacific.

MiniStor Peripherals, Inc., was a public American computer hardware company based in San Jose, California, and active from 1991 to 1995. The company was the first to manufacture and market PC Card spinning hard drives, based on the 1.8-inch hard drive specification invented earlier by Intégral. The company briefly rode a wave of success in this market before dissolving amid bankruptcy proceedings in April 1995.

Avatar Systems Corporation, later trading as Avatar Peripherals, was an American computer hardware company based in Milpitas, California, and active from 1991 to 1998. The company focused on the production of 2.5-inch cartridge hard disk drives, initially through computer system builders as an OEM and, later, directly to customers as a vendor.

Storage Dimensions, Inc., was an American computer company active from 1985 to 1998 and based in Milpitas, California. The company sold data storage hardware—chiefly magnetic-tape- and hard-drive-based storage subsystems —and developed server software for businesses. The company was perhaps best known for their SpeedStor disk utility software for MS-DOS and Windows. From 1987 to 1992, the company was a subsidiary of Maxtor.
