Ashley Nell Tipton (born 1991) [1] [2] is an American plus-size clothing designer. She is best known for her appearance on season 14 of Project Runway .

Early life

Tipton grew up in Encanto, San Diego. [3] She learned how to sew at the age of 7 from her grandmother. [4] She attended University City High School, and later graduated from Fashion Careers College in 2012. [3]

Tipton was invited to showcase at the 2012 Full Figure Fashion Week in New York. She subsequently quit her retail jobs at Torrid and The Gap. [3]

Career

Tipton launched her first clothing line in 2013. [3] She was working out of her garage when she applied to be on Project Runway . She was cast to be on season 14, which aired in 2015. [5] She was the first designer in the franchise to cater towards plus-sized women, and won the grand-prize of the show. [6]

Tipton's win was contentious. Tim Gunn, despite being a vocal proponent of plus-sized women's wear, panned Tipton's winning collection as "hideous". In an op-ed for The Washington Post , he stated that Tipton's victory "reeked of tokenism." [7]

Following her run on Project Runway, Tipton partnered with JCPenney in 2016 to produce a plus-size clothing line. By 2017, she launched her own brand and started a jewelry line. [2] [4]

Personal life

Tipton is Mexican-American. She underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2017, with some fans feeling that she betrayed the fat acceptance movement in doing so. [8]

Plus-size clothing is clothing proportioned specifically for people above the average clothing size. The application of the term varies from country to country, and according to which industry the person is involved in.

Project Runway season 2 is the second season of Bravo's Project Runway, a reality competition for fashion designers. Season 2 began airing on December 7, 2005. Following a nationwide search earlier in the year, sixteen designers were chosen as semi-finalists and brought to New York City in June 2005. After the first challenge, called "Road To The Runway", fourteen went on to compete as finalists. The winning designer, Chloe Dao, received $100,000 in seed money to help launch her own line, a 2007 Saturn Sky roadster, a spread in ELLE magazine, and a mentorship with the Banana Republic Design Team. Winning alongside Dao was her model, Grace Kelsey, who received the ELLE magazine spread. Michael Kors and Nina Garcia returned as judges for the second season. The fourth judging seat rotated each week, based on the challenge. Tim Gunn, fashion chair at Parsons The New School for Design, returned as a mentor for the designers.

The designers were described by Tim Gunn as "kids [who] have grown up watching this show".

Project Runway Season 18 began Thursday, December 5, 2019. Sixteen designers compete to become "the next great American designer." Returning as judges are supermodel Karlie Kloss, editor-in-chief of Elle, Nina Garcia, fashion designer Brandon Maxwell, and former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue Elaine Welteroth. Season 4 winner Christian Siriano returns to mentor the designers and use the "Siriano save" for the first time to bring an eliminated designer back into the competition if he disagrees with the judge’s verdict. A "save" was also used by Tim Gunn beginning in season 12 and continuing for the remainder of his time with the show.
