Garo Sparo is an American couture design house based in New York City. Its founder and head designer is Gary Spampinato, who goes professionally by Garo Sparo. [1] [2] Sparo is also a television personality who has starred on Unleashed by Garo on the Sundance Channel, and as a contestant on Bravo's Project Runway . [3] [4]

Biography

Sparo moved from North Carolina to New York City in 1995 for an opportunity to show his designs at Absolut Alternative Fashion Week. [2]

Career

In 2000, Sparo opened the Garo Sparo Boutique on St. Mark's Place in Manhattan. [5] At this time he began to focus heavily on corsetry and custom couture. His clientele rapidly grew to include many burlesque and drag icons, [4] such as Miss Understood, Hedda Lettuce, Angie Pontani, World Famous *BOB* and Sequinette. He also has many clients who collect his custom day and evening wear such as fashion icon Daphne Guinness. [6] Garo's designs have also been featured in commercials, films, dance performances and art installations. He is the resident designer for New York production company and sister organization Screaming Queens Entertainment.

Unleashed by Garo

Unleashed by Garo is a six-episode television series about Garo Sparo and the world of fashion and design. It debuted on Sundance Channel in both the U.S. and Canada on September 9, 2011. [7] [8] In each episode, three clients visit Sparo's New York City studio. Participants vary from society brides looking for unique gowns, to performers seeking stagewear.

Project Runway

Sparo was third runner-up on season 17 of Project Runway after Hester Sunshine and winner Sebastian Grey. [9]

Project Runway Season 3 was the third season of Project Runway, Bravo's successful reality competition for fashion designers. The third season of the show, with Heidi Klum returning as the host and Tim Gunn as the designers' guide, began airing on July 12, 2006. This broke tradition from the previous two seasons, which premiered in December, with the finales taking place at Olympus Fashion Week in February.

Project Runway Season 17 is the seventeenth season of the television show Project Runway, returning to Bravo for the first time since season 5. The season began on Thursday, March 14, 2019. Sixteen designers compete to become "the next great American designer." This was the first season to feature: Karlie Kloss taking over for Heidi Klum, Brandon Maxwell as Zac Posen's replacement, additional judge and former editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue, Elaine Welteroth, as well as returning judge and editor-in-chief of Elle, Nina Garcia. In addition, Season 4 winner Christian Siriano replaced Tim Gunn's role as mentor throughout the competition.
