Shantall Lacayo (born May 4, 1984) is a Nicaraguan fashion designer. She is known for being a contestant on Project Runway Latin America and Project Runway , as well as for her design company and fashion shows.
Lacayo was born in Managua, Nicaragua on May 4, 1984. [1] She began working as a fashion designer at the age of 17. In 2003, she attended U.A.M. for marketing and publicity, finishing her studies in 2008. She subsequently moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina to continue studying design and fabrics technology at Escuela Argentina de Moda. [2]
In 2009, Lacayo opened her first studio in San Telmo, Buenos Aires. [2] In 2010, she was invited to compete on the first season of Project Runway Latin America , [3] where she made it to the finale. Lacayo, alongside Camila Ortega Murillo, founded Nicaragua Diseña in 2012, a platform for promoting Nicaraguan designers. [4] In 2015, Lacayo dressed Nicaraguan filmmaker Gabriel Serra at the 87th Academy Awards. [5]
Lacayo settled in Miami, Florida, to help build her brand in the United States. [6] In May 2018, her show at Miami Fashion Week was the subject of protests due to her association with Camila Ortega Murillo, the daughter of controversial Nicaraguan politicians Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo. Public figures such as Ana Navarro and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen spoke out against Lacayo's participation. Lacayo subsequently cancelled her show. [4] That November, Lacayo also declined to participate in the Nicaragua Diseña event in solidarity against the Ortega regime. [7]
In 2019, as part of the Fashion Designers of Latin America (FDLA), Lacayo participated in her first New York Fashion Week. [8]
In 2021, Lacayo participated in season 19 of the reality television series Project Runway . Lacayo won the grand prize of the competition, the first Latin American woman to do so. [9] She planned to move to New York following the win. [10]
José Daniel Ortega Saavedra is a Nicaraguan politician and the 58th president of Nicaragua since 10 January 2007. Previously, he was leader of Nicaragua from 18 July 1979 to 25 April 1990, first as Coordinator of the Junta of National Reconstruction from 19 July 1979 to 10 January 1985, and then as the 54th president from 10 January 1985 to 25 April 1990. During his first term, he implemented policies to achieve leftist reforms across Nicaragua. In later years, Ortega's left-wing radical politics cooled significantly, leading him to pursue pro-business policies and even rapprochement with the Catholic Church. However, in 2022, Ortega resumed repression of the Church, and has imprisoned prelate Rolando José Álvarez Lagos.
José Arnoldo Alemán Lacayo is a Nicaraguan politician who served as the 56th president of Nicaragua from 10 January 1997 to 10 January 2002. In 2003, he was convicted of corruption and sentenced to a 20-year prison term; the conviction was overturned by the Supreme Court of Nicaragua in 2009.
Félix Rubén García Sarmiento, known as Rubén Darío, was a Nicaraguan poet who initiated the Spanish-language literary movement known as modernismo (modernism) that flourished at the end of the 19th century. Sergio Ramírez Mercado is a Nicaraguan writer and intellectual who was a key figure in 1979 revolution, served in the leftist Government Junta of National Reconstruction and as vice president of the country 1985–1990 under the presidency of Daniel Ortega. He has been described as Nicaragua's "best-known living writer". Since the 1990s, he has been involved in the left-wing opposition to the Nicaraguan government, in particular in the Movimiento de Renovación Sandinista. He was exiled from the country in 2021 and stripped of his nationality by the government in 2023.
Rosario María Murillo Zambrana is a Nicaraguan politician and poet who is the Vice President of Nicaragua, the country's second highest office, since January 2017 and First Lady of Nicaragua since 2007 and from 1985 to 1990 as the wife of President Daniel Ortega. Murillo has served as the Nicaraguan government's lead spokesperson, government minister, head of the Sandinista Association of Cultural Workers, and Communications Coordinator of the Council on Communication and Citizenry. She was sworn in as vice president of Nicaragua on 10 January 2017. In August 2021, she was personally sanctioned by the European Union, over alleged human rights violations.

Project Runway Latin America is a Latin American reality television series on Glitz* which focuses on fashion designs and is hosted by model Rebecca de Alba. The contestants will have to compete with each other to create the best clothes and are usually restricted in time, materials and theme. Their designs are to be judged, and one or more designers are eliminated each week. The show was canceled after its third season.

The Miss Nicaragua 2005 pageant, was held on March 5, 2005 in Managua, after several weeks of events. At the conclusion of the final night of competition, Daniela Clerk from Managua won the title. She represented Nicaragua at Miss Universe 2005 held in Thailand later that year. The rest of the finalists would enter different pageants.

The nineteenth season of Project Runway began Thursday, October 14, 2021. Sixteen designers competed to become "the next great American designer." Elle editor-in-chief Nina Garcia, fashion designer Brandon Maxwell, and former Teen Vogue editor-in-chief and journalist Elaine Welteroth returned as judges. Season 4 winner Christian Siriano returned to mentor the designers and use the "Siriano Save" to bring an eliminated designer back into the competition if he disagrees with the judges' verdict. Karlie Kloss did not return as host and head judge but appeared in the penultimate episode of the season as a guest judge.
