Ashok M. Raichur is an Indian materials scientist, nanotechnologist and a professor at the Department of Materials Engineering of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Known for his studies on the use of nanotechnology for biomedical and environmental applications, Raichur is a former Alexander von Humboldt Fellow and a life member of the National Academy of Sciences, India. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences, in 2009.
Raichur graduated in engineering from Malaviya Regional Engineering College in 1990 and earned an MS at the University of Kentucky in 1992. [1] His doctoral studies were at the University of Nevada, Reno and after securing a PhD in 1996, he worked at the same institution for his post-doctoral work as a research associate. [2]
In 1997, Raichur joined the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) as an assistant professor at the department of materials engineering in 1997 where he holds the position of a professor since 2009, while serving as an associate faculty of the Bioengineering Program as well as the Interdisciplinary Centre for Water Research (ICWaR) of IISc. [3] In between, he served the IISc as an associate professor from 2003 to 2009, as an associate faculty of the Materials Research Center during 2007–10 and as the associate chairman of the Center for Scientific and Industrial Consultancy from 2006 to 2011. He is also a Professor at the University of South Africa and a former visiting professor at the University of Johannesburg (2012–14). [1] [4]
Raichur's research focuses on biomedical and environmental applications of nanotechnology and he leads a group of scientists at IISc who are involved in the development of polyelectrolyte capsules for gene and drug delivery and nanostructured multilayers for sensing applications, nanoparticle synthesis and their dispersions with the help of biosurfactants. [5] In 2014, he led the team that developed a nanocapsule made of biopolymers which was capable of delivering drugs at specific target sites, such as cancer cells. [6] The drug delivery system developed by them was composed of a drug molecule that resisted premature release or degradation and released the drug at target site with the help of local physiological cues. [7] It was reported that the capsule walls had a cross-linked layer by layer assembly which enabled it to hold large quantities of drugs. [8] He has also developed a catalytic method for cleaning water using nanoparticles which destroyed the organic contaminants in the water. [4] Besides, he has contributed chapters to books. [9]
Raichur is a member of the PI Committee of the National Programme on Technology Enhance Learning (NPTEL), an educational project funded by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India. [10] He is a life member of the National Academy of Sciences, India, the Association of Separation Scientists and Technologists (ASSET), and the Materials Research Society of India. [11] [12] [13]
Raichur received the Biotech Process Development and Commercialization Award of the Department of Biotechnology in 2003, [1] the same year as he received the National Metallurgists Day Award of the Ministry of Steel and Mines of the Government of India. [14] He held Alexander von Humboldt Fellowship during 2004–05 and was selected for the Prof. Satish Dhawan Young Engineers Award by the Government of Karnataka in 2005. [15] [16] Two years later, he received the 2007 MRSI Medal of the Materials Research Society of India. [17] The Department of Biotechnology (DBT) of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards in 2009. [18]
Nanomedicine is the medical application of nanotechnology. Nanomedicine ranges from the medical applications of nanomaterials and biological devices, to nanoelectronic biosensors, and even possible future applications of molecular nanotechnology such as biological machines. Current problems for nanomedicine involve understanding the issues related to toxicity and environmental impact of nanoscale materials.

Bikramjit Basu is currently a full professor at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, specializing in Engineering Ceramics and Biomaterials Science. He was awarded the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for science and technology, the highest science award in India, for the year 2013 in engineering science category. The prize was awarded for his "outstanding contributions encompassing theory and experiments to significantly expand our understanding of the in vitro cell functionality modulation on engineered bio-materials using electric field simulation approach". With a team of clinicians and entrepreneurs, he is actively involved in translating his research into implantable biomedical devices for orthopedic and dental restorative applications and currently leading a center of Excellence at IISc, Bangalore. In 2015, he received the National Bioscience award. Besides, Prof. Basu is also involved in development of Zirconum diboride based UHTCs.
Sandhya Srikant Visweswariah is a scientist and academic at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India. She is currently the Chairperson of the Department of Molecular Reproduction, Development and Genetics and the Co-chair of the Centre for Biosystems Science and Engineering, Indian Institute of Science. She additionally holds the position of Adjunct Professor, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Bergen, Norway. Her research involves the investigation of the mechanism of signal transduction via cyclic nucleotides, phosphodiesterases and novel cyclases in bacteria. Most recently, she was awarded a Bill and Melinda Gates Grand Challenges Explorations Grant for her proposal entitled "A Small Animal Model of ETEC-Mediated Diarrhea".

He is known for his studies on Nanostructured Materials and is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Engineering Sciences in 2012.
Arup Kumar Raychaudhuri is an Indian condensed matter physicist, materials scientist and a Distinguished Emeritus Professor at the S. N. Bose National Centre for Basic Sciences. Known for his pioneering work on the interplay of disorder and interaction, Raychaudhuri is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies viz. Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India and Indian National Science Academy as well as the Asia-Pacific Academy of Materials. Tatu is a proponent of the One Health approach. Ashis K. Mukherjee is an Indian biochemist specializing in snake venom biochemistry, molecular biology and microbiology. He served as the Head of the Department of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology of Tezpur University during 2008– 2011. Known for his research on snake venom biochemistry, proteomic composition and other proteins related work from microbial and plant background, Mukherjee serves as the head and coordinator of the Nodal Center for Medical Colleges and Biomedical Research Institutes of North East India at Tezpur University.
