Rakesh Aggarwal (born 1961) is an Indian gastroenterologist, who is currently the Director of Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER), Puducherry, India. He was previously a Professor of Gastroenterology at the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences. Known for his studies on Gastrointestinal diseases, Liver diseases, and Viral Hepatitis, Aggarwal is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies, namely National Academy of Sciences, India, the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy, and of the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences in 2002. Rakesh Aggarwal was born in 1961, and spent his childhood in Chandigarh. [2] After obtaining an MBBS degree in 1983 and completing his residency (with MD General Medicine) in 1986 from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, he joined the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh for a fellowship in gastroenterology, obtaining his DM (Gastroenterology) degree in 1989. [3] Thereafter, he joined the Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences, Lucknow (SGPGI) as a faculty member in the department of gastroenterology, where he held the position of a Professor of Gastroenterology. [4] In between, he trained at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at their hepatitis branch during 1996-1998 doing laboratory research on Hepatitis E, and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine from where he obtained a masters degree in epidemiology in 2008. [3]

Dr. Rakesh Aggarwal joined as Director, Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education & Research (JIPMER) in Pondicherry, India with effect from January 1, 2019. [5] He currently resides at JIPMER, Puducherry while the last three decade of his life had been spent in the SGPGI Campus in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. [6]

Legacy

Aggarwal's work is focused in the fields of gastroenterology and hepatology with special emphasis on viral hepatitis, in particular Hepatitis E and Hepatitis B, on which he has conducted research from epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory perspectives. [3] He has also contributed to the areas of health economics and immunization. [7] His studies have been documented by way of a number of articles [8] [9] [note 1] and ResearchGate, an online repository of scientific articles has listed several of them. [10] Besides, He has mentored several research scholars in their doctoral studies. [11]

Aggarwal has been the principal investigator of several projects funded by various Indian funding agencies. Biomedical Informatics Centers of ICMR was another project managed by him, on sponsorship from the Indian Council of Medical Research. [12] He sits in the Panel of experts on Gastroenterology of the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare [13] as well as the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee on Viral Hepatitis of the World Health Organization and has conducted several workshops which included the V. S.R. Naik Memorial Workshop on Computers and Informatics in Medicine held in 2008 [14] and the Workshop on Scientific Writing of the Indian Council of Medical Research held in September 2010. [15] He was a member of the experts' panel of SAGE Working Group on Hepatitis E from October 2013 to December 2014 [16] and has also been associated with scientific journals as an editor. [3]

Awards and honors

The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards in 2002. [1] The National Academy of Sciences, India elected him as a fellow in 2007 [17] and he received the elected fellowships of the Indian Academy of Sciences the same year. [2] The Indian National Academy of Sciences, the third of the major Indian science academies, elected him as a fellow in 2017. [18] [19]

Badri Nath Tandon was an Indian gastroenterologist, hepatologist, medical researcher and academic, and the Chairman and Senior Consultant of Gastroenterology, at Metro Hospitals and Heart Institute, Noida. He is a former Professor and Head of Department of Gastroenterology and Human Nutrition Unit at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi (AIIMS) and a former Director and Senior Consultant of Hepatology and Gastroenterology at Pushpawati Singhania Research Institute for Liver, Renal and Digestive Diseases, New Delhi. He is a recipient of several awards including Sasakawa WHO Health Prize and Jubilee Medal of the RAMS. Shiv Kumar Sarin is an Indian physician; an outstanding hepatologist, gastroenterologist, translational scientist, accomplished researcher, mentor, and a gifted teacher. Under the aegis of Delhi Govt., he set-up the Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS); the largest liver hospital and a deemed Liver University, and a WHO Centre. Kallipatti Ramasamy Palaniswamy is an Indian gastroenterologist, medical academic and writer and a senior consultant at Apollo Hospital, Chennai. He is a former president (2004–05) of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology and a patron its Tamil Nadu chapter. After graduating in medicine from JJM Medical College, Davangere in 1972, he continued his studies to secure an MD in general medicine in 1977 and a DM in gastroenterology in 1981, simultaneously working as a member of faculty. In 1986, while working as an assistant professor, he was deputed to Stanley Medical College, Chennai as a professor where he established the department of gastroenterology.

Vinod Bhakuni (1962–2011) was an Indian molecular biophysicist and the head of the Molecular and Structural Biology Division of the Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI). He was the founder of the Protein Chemistry laboratory of CDRI and was known for his contributions to the study of protein folding. A recipient of the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, he was an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Sciences, India. Shyam Swarup Agarwal was an Indian geneticist, immunologist and the director of Sanjay Gandhi Postgraduate Institute of Medical Sciences (SGPGI-MS), Lucknow. A former director of the Advanced Center for Treatment, Research and Education in Cancer (ACTREC) at the Tata Memorial Centre, he was the pioneer of medical genetics and clinical immunology education in India. Known for his researches in the fields of genetics and molecular biology, he was an Emeritus Professor of the National Academy of Medical Sciences, and an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies, namely, the Indian Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India, and the Indian National Science Academy. Subrat Kumar Panda is an Indian virologist, professor and Head Department of Pathology at All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Delhi. Known for his researches in viral hepatitis, Panda is an elected fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and the National Academy of Medical Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards for his contributions to Medical Sciences in 1995.
