Trilochan Mohapatra (born 20 April 1962) is an Indian biotechnologist, geneticist, former government secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) and former director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Known for his studies in the fields of molecular genetics and genomics, Mohapatra is an elected fellow of the National Academy of Sciences, India, the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, the Indian National Science Academy and the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding. The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards, for his contributions to biosciences in 2003. Trilochan Mohapatra was born on 20 April 1962 at Kharibil village in Cuttack in the Indian state of Odisha. [2] After completing early schooling at Laxmi Narayan High School at Eranch near his home village in 1978, he did his pre-university studies at Ravenshaw College (present day Ravenshaw University) in 1980. Joining Orissa University of Agriculture and Technology (OUAT), he earned a BSc in agriculture in 1985 as well as an MSc in genetics in 1987 [3] and continued at the institution for his doctoral studies to secure a PhD in 1992. [4] He started his career in 1992 as a senior scientist at the National Research Centre on Plant Biotechnology (NRCPB), a centre of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) for advanced research in the fields of molecular biology and biotechnology in crop plants where he worked until 2012, serving as a principal scientist from 2005. In between, he did advanced training in rice genome sequencing at the Arizona Genomics Institute of the University of Arizona during 2003–04. [5] In 2012, he was appointed as the director of Central Rice Research Institute [6] as well as the vice-chancellor of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute. [7] He served as the director of IARI in the year 2015-16 and on 22 February 2016, he was appointed as the secretary of the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), [8] [9] a department working under the Ministry of Agriculture to act as the government interface for promoting agricultural research and education in India a position he served till 2022. [10] Simultaneously, he was holding the position of the director general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research till 2022. Thereafter he was succeeded by Himanshu Pathak. [11]

Mohapatra is married [2] and the family resides at National Agriculture Science Centre (NASC) Complex along Dev Prakash Shastri Marg in New Delhi. [12]

Legacy

Mohapatra, whose research interests covered the fields of molecular genetics and genomics, [13] is known to have worked on the bacterial sequencing of rice and tomato and is credited with the development of a high-yielding basmati rice which is resistant to bacterial leaf blight [6] [14] which was accomplished using molecular marker assisted selection, physical mapping and genome sequencing. [15] Molecular mapping of genome and tagging of gene in mustard, molecular mapping and gene isolation in Basmati rice hybrid, marker assisted selection for powdery mildew resistance in pea, molecular marker analysis of sugarcane, identification of pearl millet hybrids, sex differentiation of kiwifruit employing Random Amplification of Polymorphic DNA technique and evaluation of genetic diversity of jute were some of the other research projects he has undertaken, and he holds several patents for the processes he has developed. [16] His studies have been documented by way of a number of articles [17] [note 1] and ResearchGate, an online repository of scientific articles has listed 182 of them. [18] He has also guided several students in their doctoral and master's studies [2] and has imparted training on molecular breeding to over 25 scientists. [3]

As the head of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research, Mohapatra is in charge of 101 ICAR institutes and 71 agricultural universities, spread across India. [8] He sits in the council of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences [4] and is a member of the executive committee of Borlaug Institute for South Asia. [19] He served as an expert on Germplasm Characterization at the National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology, Korea, having received an invitation from the National Institute of Agricultural Biotechnology (NIAB), in 2004. He is a life member of the Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding [2] and the Society of Plant Biochemistry and Biotechnology. [20] He is also a former associate editor of BMC Genetics and the Journal of Genetics. [21]

Awards and honors

Mohapatra received two awards from the Indian National Science Academy in 1994, [22] namely INSA Young Scientist Medal [23] and Professor LSS Kumar Memorial Award. [24] He was selected for the NAAS-Tata Young Scientist Award of the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) in 2001; he also received two other honors from NAAS, the elected fellowship in 2006 [4] and the Recognition Award in 2016. [25] The next year, the Indian Agricultural Research Institute selected him for the B. P. Pal Memorial Award. [26] The Department of Biotechnology of the Government of India awarded him the National Bioscience Award for Career Development, one of the highest Indian science awards in 2003. [1] The Indian Society of Genetics and Plant Breeding elected him as a fellow in 2004 [21] and he received the elected fellowships of the National Academy of Sciences, India in 2005 [27] and the Indian National Science Academy in 2013. [28] The National Academy of Sciences, India honored him again in 2007 with the NASI-Reliance Platinum Jubilee Award [29] and he received the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Indian Genetics Congress of 2015. He is also a recipient of the Bioved Agri-Innovation Award of 2015 and the Om Prakash Bhasin Award and the IMS Diamond Jubilee Memorial Award, both in 2016. [3] The award orations delivered by him include the Prasanna Kumar Dash Memorial Lecture of the Orissa Environmental Society (2013), Dr. Gopal Chandra Patnaik Memorial Lecture of the Bigyan Prachar Samiti (2013), Platinum Jubilee Lecture Award of 101st Indian Science Congress (2014) and the inaugural Prof. S.N. The Central Arid Zone Research Institute (CAZRI) is one of the biggest research institutes of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), an autonomous organization working under the aegis of the Department of Agriculture Research and Education (DARE) of the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare of Government of India. CAZRI has the distinction of being one of the first institutes in the world exclusively devoted to arid zone research and development. Nagendra Kumar Singh is an Indian agricultural scientist. He is presently a National Professor Dr. B.P. Pal Chair and JC Bose National Fellow at ICAR-National Institute for Plant Biotechnology, Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. He was born in a small village Rajapur in the Mau District of Uttar Pradesh, India. He is known for his research in the area of plant genomics, genetics, molecular breeding and biotechnology, particularly for his contribution in the decoding of rice, tomato, wheat, pigeon pea, jute and mango genomes and understanding of wheat seed storage proteins and their effect on wheat quality. He has made significant advances in comparative analysis of rice and wheat genomes and mapping of genes for yield, salt tolerance and basmati quality traits in rice. He is one of the highest cited agricultural scientists from India for the last five years.

Rajeev Kumar Varshney is an Indian agricultural scientist, specializing in genomics, genetics, molecular breeding and capacity building in developing countries. Varshney is currently serving as Director, Western Australian State Agricultural Biotechnology Center; Director, Centre for Crop & Food Innovation; and International Chair in Agriculture & Food Security with the Food Futures Institute at Murdoch University, Australia since Feb 2022. Before joining Murdoch University, Australia he served International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), a global agriculture R&D institute, for more than 16 years in different scientific and research leadership roles including Research Program Director for three global research programs– Grain Legumes, Genetic Gains and Accelerated Crop Improvement Program. He has the onus of establishing and nurturing the Center of Excellence in Genomics & Systems Biology (CEGSB), a globally recognized center for genomics research at ICRISAT that made impacts on improving agriculture and development of human resources in several countries including India, China, Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria, Ghana, Mali, Senegal, Burkina Faso, etc. Varshney holds Adjunct/Honorary/Visiting Professor positions at 10 academic institutions in Australia, China, Ghana, Hong Kong and India, including The University of Western Australia, University of Queensland, West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement, University of Hyderabad, Chaudhary Charan Singh University and Professor Jayashankar Telangana State Agricultural University.

Ebrahimali Abubacker Siddiq is an Indian agricultural scientist, whose research in genetics and plant breeding is reported to have assisted in the development of various high-yielding rice varieties such as dwarf basmati and hybrid rice. The government of India honoured Siddiq in 2011 with the fourth-highest civilian award of Padma Shri.

Vijaipal Singh in Narsan Kalan, Haridwar District of Uttarakhand State, India is an Agricultural scientist associated with the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and is known for his contributions to the science of rice genetics and breeding. He is well known for his contributions in developing the most popular Basmati rice variety, Pusa Basmati 1121. A post graduate and a doctoral degree (PhD) holder in Agriculture Botany from Agra University, he started his career as a research assistant at the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi in 1968 and retired as a professor at the Division of Genetics, IARI. Singh is credited with several articles published in peer reviewed journals. In recognition of his services to the nation, he was honored by the Government of India, in 2012, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

Atmaram Bhairav Joshi was an Indian agricultural scientist and academic, known for his contributions to the field of wheat and other crop breeding. He was the vice-chancellor of Mahatma Phule Krishi Viswavidyalaya, Rahuri and the chairman of the Research Advisory Committee of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi. The Government of India awarded him the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri in 1975.

Asis Datta is an Indian biochemist, molecular biologist and genetic engineer, known for his research on genetically modified foods and food nutritional security. He was the founding Director of the National Institute of Plant Genome Research and is credited with the discovery of genes that assist in extended preservation of fruits and vegetables. He is a recipient of the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award, the highest Indian award and in the Science category, and was awarded the fourth highest civilian award of the Padma Shri, by the Government of India, in 1999. In 2008, he was included again in the Republic Day Honours list for the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Swapan Kumar Datta</span> Indian scientist (born 1953)

Swapan Kumar Datta is a (Professor) of rice biotechnology who focuses on genetic engineering of Indica rice. Datta has demonstrated the development of genetically engineered Indica rice from protoplast derived from haploid embryogenic cell suspension culture. Golden Indica Rice with enriched Provitamin A and Ferritin rice with high iron content were developed by his group with a vision to meet the challenges of malnutrition in developing countries. Datta has been named as one among the top 25 Indian scientists from all fields of science by India Today.

Virender Lal Chopra was an Indian biotechnologist, geneticist, agriculturalist and a director-general of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), known to have contributed to the development of wheat production in India. He was the chancellor of Central University of Kerala, a Chancellor of the Central Agricultural University, Imphal and a member of the Planning Commission of India. An elected fellow of several science academies such as Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India, European Academy of Sciences and Arts and The World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), he was a recipient of a number of honors including Borlaug Award, FAO World Food Day Award and Om Prakash Bhasin Award. The Government of India awarded him the third highest civilian honour of the Padma Bhushan, in 1985, for his contributions to agricultural science.

Hari Krishan Jain was an Indian cytogeneticist and plant breeder, known for his contributions to the field of genetic recombination and the control of interchromosome level. He is a former chancellor of the Central Agricultural University, Imphal, a former director of the Indian Agriculture Research Institute and a recipient of honours such as Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Award, Borlaug Award and Om Prakash Bhasin Award. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1966, for his contributions to biological sciences. Sushil Kumar was an Indian geneticist and academic, known for his Plant and microbial genetical genomics, especially the studies on Escherichia coli and Lambda phage as well as on the mutants of Rhizobium. He was a former director of the Central Institute of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research and an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, National Academy of Sciences, India, and Indian Academy of Sciences. Akhilesh Kumar Tyagi is an Indian plant biologist and the former director of National Institute of Plant Genome Research. Known for his studies on plant genomics and biotechnology, Tyagi is an elected fellow of all the three major Indian science academies namely Indian Academy of Sciences, Indian National Science Academy and National Academy of Sciences, India as well as The World Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Anil Grover is an Indian molecular biologist, professor and the head of the Department of Plant Molecular Biology at the University of Delhi. Ashwani Pareek is Executive Director of NABI a prominent plant biologist and educator noted chiefly for his contribution in plant molecular biology and biotechnology. He is currently working as Professor of plant molecular biology and biotechnology at the School of Life Sciences, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, and adjunct professor at the University of Western Australia, Perth, Australia. He is a recipient of several honors including the Visitors award for Technology Development from the President of India for developing Stress Tolerant Rice of the Next Generation (STRONG) that has the potential to enhance the income of rice farmers. The award ceremony was held at the Rashtrapati Bhawan on 2 May 2018. Recently on 26 February 2020, he has been awarded "Tata Innovation Award 2020" by Department of Biotechnology, Govt of India. He has interest in understanding the physiological and molecular adaptations in xero-halophytic plants and development of transgenic rice plants with enhanced tolerance towards multiple abiotic stresses.

Dr. Ashok Kumar Singh is an Indian scientist specializing in the field of Plant Genetics and Breeding. He is known for his contribution to Basmati rice breeding. He is currently the director and vice-chancellor of the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi, a deemed to be university. Dr Singh is an alumnus of Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi where he did his bachelor's degree and Masters Program in agriculture with specialisation in plant genetics and breeding. He received doctorate degree from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute, New Delhi for his research on rice breeding.
