Assam Women's University is a public university located in Jorhat, Assam, India. It was established by the Assam Women's University Act, 2013 (XXII of 2013) by the Assam Government. [1] [2] [3] [4] It is the first women's university in Assam. [5]

During the initial set up Assam Agricultural University Vice-Chancellor was appointed as the mentor of the university by the state government. [6]

On 12 September 2019, the Governor of Assam and chancellor of the university Jagdish Mukhi appointed Malinee Goswami as the first vice chancellor of the university. [7]

Academics

The university offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and research programs in various disciplines such as Arts, Science, Commerce, Management, Social Work, and Education. Some of the popular courses offered by AWU are BA, B.Sc, B.Com, BBA, MBA, MCA, M.Sc, MA, M.Ed, BPT, and Ph.D. [5] The university follows a semester system for all its courses.

During his tenure as the chief minister, he is credited with ending militant insurgency and mitigating violence in addition to improving the state's fiscal condition.

Jorhat Institute of Science and Technology, formerly Jorhat Science College is an engineering college established in 1971 by the government of Assam. It is located in Sotai, on the outskirts of Jorhat city. It is the first science college of Upper Assam and the third state-government-run engineering college of Assam. It is affiliated to Assam Science and Technology University. It is also the only government engineering college of Assam which offers both engineering and basic science courses.

Hitendra Nath Goswami is an Indian politician from Bharatiya Janata Party. He served as Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly from 30 January 2017 to 20 May 2021. Goswami is a member of Assam Legislative Assembly from Jorhat constituency. He was a member of Asom Gana Parishad until 16 February 2013, when he resigned from the party membership "expressing his frustration at the failure of the party leadership to bring in new blood to revive the regional force". He joined BJP on 10 March 2014 in New Delhi. However, he made it clear that he has nothing against the aims and objectives of the regional force and he would always continue his anti-Congress stand.

The foundation stone of the Jorhat NID was laid on February 19, 2011, by then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The fund for the institute was allocated in February 2014. The Union Minister of Commerce and Industry Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the institute at Rajabari on 22 February 2019 via video telecast. The institute offers four year courses in Textile, Apparel design, Communication design and Industrial design.

Jitendranath Goswami is an Indian scientist from Jorhat, Assam. He was the Chief Scientist of Chandrayaan-1, and was also the developer of this project. He served as a director of Physical Research Laboratory situated at Ahmadabad, Gujarat. He was also associated with Chandrayaan-2 and Mangalyaan.

Mihir Kanti Chaudhuri is an Indian inorganic chemist and a former vice chancellor of Tezpur University. He is known for his studies on the synthesis of dioxygen complexes and fluorine compounds of metals and non metals and is an elected fellow of the Indian National Science Academy, and the Indian Academy of Sciences. The Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, the apex agency of the Government of India for scientific research, awarded him the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology, one of the highest Indian science awards, in 1989, for his contributions to chemical sciences.
