Atascadero High School (formerly Margarita Black Union High School) is an American public high school located in Atascadero, California. Atascadero High School is 1 of 2 high schools in the Atascadero Unified School District. The school receives its students mainly from the Atascadero Junior High School and Atascadero Fine Arts Academy, and also attracts students from outlying areas of northern and eastern San Luis Obispo County. The school's biggest athletic rival is Paso Robles High School. Both schools are now part of the CIF Central Section as members of the Central Coast Athletic Association and have faced off over the years within the California Individual Finals.

Atascadero High School is home to a performing arts department.

Robotics

Atascadero High School hosts the shop space for FIRST Robotics Competition Team 973 The Greybots. [7] After winning their first event in 2009, [8] the team went to the FIRST Championship every year besides 2010. They won the 2011 World Championship as the 2nd pick in their alliance, as well as the 2017 and 2019 World Championship as captain of their alliance. While no longer formally associated with the district, they continue to meet at their shop on the school campus.

Auto Shop/SkillsUSA

Atascadero High School SkillsUSA Automotive teaches students how to work on their cars and get a career in the automotive service industry. Atascadero High School Competes in Region 2, which serves Fresno, Kern, Kings, Monterey, San Benito, San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Santa Cruz, and Tulare counties. Students compete in Automotive Service Technology and Maintenance and Light Repair. In 2017 at the SkillsUSA State Conference in Ontario, California, the team earned a 3rd place medal in Automotive Service Technology.

History

Atascadero High School was formerly known as Margarita Black Union High School. Work began on the original high school building designed by Colony Architect John Roth in 1920, but it wasn't until May 1921 that Atascadero Masonic Lodge No. 493 conducted the laying of the cornerstone. The original building featured a clock tower, a pitched tile roof and a large library with a fireplace on one end of the building, The clock tower was able to be viewed in all four directions. In the 1950s, the state of California decided the building was unsafe. The clock tower was taken down, the gable roof replaced with a flat one and the fireplace deemed unusable. This resulted in it becoming a square box building, which currently houses the theater rooms, and the original auditorium/gymnasium was knocked down in 1973. The last original building of the high school was recently taken down after close to 90 years of service due to safety hazards such as asbestos. The empty space is likely to be used for future facilities. [9]

Ocean View High School (OVHS) is a public comprehensive college-prep academy located in Huntington Beach, California. OVHS was established in 1976; their mascot is the Seahawks. Currently, there are approximately 1,350 enrolled students. It is part of the HBUHSD school district, with five other high schools. The school is unique in that it features the only IB Program in the district. The implementation of “embedded tutorial” at the end of each period two years ago resulted in the biggest drop in the total number of D and F grades for students in the district. It features a business academy that has 170 participants, the sole Mandarin Chinese foreign language program in the district, and a college preparation curriculum. OVHS is also a two-time California Distinguished School.

Los Angeles Baptist High School (LAB) was a Baptist, private, coeducational day school located in North Hills, California with approximately 848 students enrolled in grades 6 through 12. In the summer of 2012, the school was acquired by another Christian day school in the San Fernando Valley (Hillcrest Christian School), and the two merged to become Heritage Christian Schools. The Pac-8 League was a high school athletic conference in California that was affiliated with the CIF Southern Section (CIF-SS). Member schools were located in San Luis Obispo and northern Santa Barbara counties. Prior to the 2014–15 school year, the conference was known as the Pac-7 League; Mission Prep High School joined as the eighth member. The Pac-8 League was dissolved in 2018 after its member schools left the CIF-SS for the CIF Central Section and formed a new conference, the Central Coast Athletic Conference, with members of the Los Padres League.

Dan Loney is a former American football offensive lineman who last played for the San Jose SaberCats of the Arena Football League. Loney attended Atascadero High School in Atascadero, California, where he played competitive football; he continued to play football at Cal Poly, starting for the Mustangs in the late 1990s and blocking for teammates including Kamil Loud, Antonio Warren, and Alli Abrew, among others. Upon graduating, he was not selected in the 2000 NFL draft; as such, he signed with the San Jose SaberCats in early 2001.

The Central Coast Athletic Association (CCAA) is a high school athletic conference in California that is affiliated with the CIF Central Section. The association was established in 2018 as the Central Coast Athletic Conference and consists of 16 schools in San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties that previously were members of the CIF Southern Section and three of its constituent conferences, the Pac-8, the Los Padres League, and the Channel League.
