Men's javelin throw events for athletes with cerebral palsy were held at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in the Athens Olympic Stadium. Events were held in three disability classes. [1]

Cerebral palsy A group of disorders affecting the development of movement and posture, often accompanied by disturbances of sensation, perception, cognition, and behavior. It results from damage to the fetal or infant brain.

Cerebral palsy (CP) is a group of permanent movement disorders that appear in early childhood. Signs and symptoms vary among people and over time. Often, symptoms include poor coordination, stiff muscles, weak muscles, and tremors. There may be problems with sensation, vision, hearing, swallowing, and speaking. Often, babies with cerebral palsy do not roll over, sit, crawl or walk as early as other children of their age. Other symptoms include seizures and problems with thinking or reasoning, which each occur in about one third of people with CP. While symptoms may get more noticeable over the first few years of life, underlying problems do not worsen over time.

2004 Summer Paralympics

The 2004 Summer Paralympics, the 12th Summer Paralympic Games, were a major international multi-sport event for athletes with disabilities governed by the International Paralympic Committee, held in Athens, Greece from 17 September to 28 September 2004. 3,806 athletes from 136 National Paralympic Committees competed. 519 medal events were held in 19 sports.

Nicholas Ian Newman is a Paralympian athlete from Bloemfontein, South Africa competing mainly in category F36 javelin events. He was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy from birth. In the 2001 SA Games (Stellenbosch) he broke the Senior world record while being a Junior and in the 2003 SA Games (Germiston) he broke his own world record. He competed in the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece where he did not win a medal in the F36 shot put but continued on to win the gold medal in the F36/38 javelin competition. Four years later in Beijing, China he finished third, winning a bronze medal, when attempting to defend his title in the F36/38 javelin. In 2013 he competed in the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final, held in London, where he finished in 13th place. In 2015, he competed in the ITU World Paratriathlon Event held in Buffalo City, South Africa where he finished in 12th place. One year later he competed again and placed in 13th. In 2014, 2015, 2017, and 2018, he competed in the RSA Paratriathlon National Championships placing fourth twice, second, and first respectively. He recently completed a 70.3 Ironman in Buffalo City, South Africa. He has been selected to participate in the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Lausanne in Lausanne, Switzerland from August 30th, 2019 to September 1st, 2019. He regularly completes triathlons in 1 Hour and 27 Minutes to 1 Hour and 32 Minutes.

South Africa competed at the 2004 Summer Paralympics in Athens, Greece. The team included 51 athletes, 31 men and 20 women. Competitors from South Africa won 35 medals, including 15 gold, 13 silver and 7 bronze to finish 13th in the medal table.
