Aussie Broadband (also known as Aussie or ABB) is an Australian operated telecommunications company that was formed in Morwell in Victoria's Gippsland region in 2008.

The company also has offices in Victoria (Dandenong South and Melbourne CBD), Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and remote staff scattered across Australia. Their customer service centres are based wholly in Australia, and they are one of the largest employers in the Latrobe Valley region.

Aussie Broadband's market share of NBN services sits at 8.3%, with the company totalling 765,800 broadband connections as of February 2024. [1]

The company was formed in 2008 after the amalgamation of Wideband Networks and Westvic Broadband. [2]

Aussie Broadband is the fourth largest retail internet service provider in Australia. [3]

History

Aussie Broadband was the formed with the amalgamation of Wideband Networks and Westvic Broadband, both of which had been trading since 2003. Wideband Networks was formed by now Managing Director Phillip Britt and Chief Technical Officer (CTO) John Reisinger.

After the merger, Aussie Broadband focused on providing services to regional areas, such as Gippsland, Western Victoria, South Australia and the Northern Territory.

In 2010, Aussie Broadband sold its satellite customer base to SkyMesh, the largest sale of a satellite customer base in Australia. [4]

Aussie Broadband started providing NBN services as of 2017, ceasing third party reseller agreements. [5]

In October 2018, Fetch and Aussie Broadband announced a partnership. [6] [7]

In 2019, Aussie Broadband upgraded its national and international networks to provide capacity for 500,000 customers with direct peering in Los Angeles, San Jose, and Singapore, as well as buying capacity on multiple international fibre optic cables. [8]

In September 2019 it was announced work had commenced to prepare the company for going public, and in September 2020 Managing Director Phil Britt formally announced the company would be launching an initial public offering and listing on the Australian Securities Exchange. [9] The public offer was extended to customers of the company, and current employees were eligible to be gifted a small package of shares. [10] [11] The company began trading on the market at 11am on 16 October 2020 under the ticker ABB. [12] [13]

In March 2022, Aussie Broadband acquired Brisbane-based IT company Over the Wire for $344 million. Over the Wire provides voice networks, security services and cloud-based management systems for businesses. [14]

Aussie Broadband bought the NBN customer base (15,000 subscribers) of Uniti Group in May 2023. [15] In November 2023, Aussie Broadband acquired Symbio for $262 million, expanding its wholesale business. [16]

Awards

In 2019, Managing Director Phillip Britt was recognised by CommsDay for his contributions to the Australian telecommunications industry by being inducted into the Edison Awards Hall of Fame. [17] [18]

Internet in Australia first became available on a permanent basis to universities in Australia in May 1989, via AARNet. Pegasus Networks was Australia's first public Internet provider in June 1989. The first commercial dial-up Internet Service Provider (ISP) appeared in capital cities soon after, and by the mid-1990s almost the entire country had a range of choices of dial-up ISPs. Today, Internet access is available through a range of technologies, i.e. hybrid fibre coaxial cable, digital subscriber line (DSL), Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) and satellite Internet. In July 2009, the federal government, in partnership with the industrial sector, began rolling out a nationwide fibre-to-the-premises (FTTP) and improved fixed wireless and satellite access through the National Broadband Network. Subsequently, the roll out was downgraded to a Multi-Technology Mix on the promise of it being less expensive and with earlier completion. The National Broadband Network (NBN) is an Australian national wholesale open-access data network. It includes wired and radio communication components rolled out and operated by NBN Co, a government-owned corporation. Internet service providers, known under NBN as retail service providers or RSPs, contract with NBN to access the data network and sell fixed Internet access to end users.

AusBBS was an Australian Internet service provider (ISP) offering Internet and phone services. It was one of the first ISPs to launch with a specific focus on Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN) which is being rolled out by the Federal Government via the fully owned NBN Co. Providers such as AusBBS have also been referred to as Retail Service Providers (RSPs) since the commencement of the NBN.

MyNetFone Australia Pty Ltd is part of the MNF Group, the company that owns and operates Australia's largest VoIP network, which is also the 3rd largest interconnected voice network in the country. MyNetFone provides broadband internet and cloud-based communication services to residential, business and government sectors.

MyRepublic Group Limited is a Singaporean communications service provider. Launched in 2011, MyRepublic currently operates in Singapore and licenses its platform to operators in Brunei and Indonesia.

The Sky Muster satellites are two geostationary (GEO) communications satellites operated by NBN Co Limited and built by SSL. They were launched in 2015 and 2016 to provide fast broadband in areas where NBN didn't want to either lay fiber or install enough wireless antennas and offshore. The satellites are positioned 35,786 kilometres (22,236 mi) above the equator, north of Australia. They provide download speeds to users of up to 100 Mbit/s, and upload speeds of 5 Mbit/s in a best-case scenario.

Amaysim is an Australian provider of mobile phone plans. Amaysim operates as a Mobile Virtual Network Operator on the Optus mobile network, and specialises in offering a range of SIM-only mobile plans.

Vodafone is the third-largest wireless carrier in Australia, with 5.8 million subscribers as of 2020.

Superloop is an Australian telecommunications company and ISP. It was founded in 2014 by Bevan Slattery.
