Autocrat, LLC (now named Finlay Extracts and Ingredients USA (Finlays)) is a coffee and tea extracts manufacturing company based in Lincoln, Rhode Island, United States. [1] [2] The company's coffee syrups are often used to make coffee milk, which was made the official state drink of Rhode Island in 1993. [1] [3] [4] The company's name change occurred in 2015, and its retail products remain marketed under the Autocrat brand name.

History

Autocrat, LLC was established in 1895 under the name Brownell & Field Coffee Company, and began manufacturing coffee syrup in the 1930s. [4] [5] [6] In 1991, the firm acquired Eclipse, a coffee syrup manufacturer, after which it became the sole manufacturer of coffee syrup in the United States. [6] [7] In January 2012, the firm partnered with RFI, LLC to expand coffee product offerings. [8] In April 2014, the company was acquired by James Finlay Limited, a British tea extract producer, and continued to operate under the Autocrat name. [9] [5] In July 2015, the company's corporate name was changed to Finlay Extracts and Ingredients USA (Finlays). [5] Retail products remain marketed under the Autocrat brand name. [5]

Products

The company produces a brand of coffee syrup under the Autocrat name, and also as Coffee Time Syrup, [4] [10] and after the acquisition of Eclipse in 1991, it also continued to manufacture coffee syrup under the Eclipse brand name. It also manufactures and markets frozen and powdered coffee and tea extracts and concentrates. [2]

Autocrat and Coffee Connection collaborated to invent the Frappuccino in 1992, and in 1994 Starbucks acquired all of the 23 Coffee Connection locations, along with the trademark rights to the "Frappuccino" name. [5]

In December 2013, Narragansett Brewing Company marketed a limited edition stout brewed with Autocrat Coffee syrup. [11] [12]

Frappuccino is a trademarked brand of the Starbucks Corporation for a line of iced, blended coffee drinks. It consists of coffee or crème base, blended with ice and other various ingredients like flavored syrups, usually topped with whipped cream and or spices. Frappuccinos are also sold as bottled coffee beverages in grocery stores, convenience stores and from vending machines.

Iced coffee

Iced coffee is a type of coffee beverage served chilled, brewed variously with the fundamental division being cold brew – brewing the coffee cold, yielding a different flavor, and not requiring cooling – or brewing normally (hot) and then cooling, generally by simply pouring over ice or into ice cold milk. In hot brewing, sweeteners and flavoring are often mixed into the hot coffee before cooling, due to faster dissolution in hot water. Alternatively, syrup may be used, particularly gum syrup.

Yuenyeung

Yuenyeung, yuanyang, coffee with tea, also commonly known as Kopi Cham in Malaysia is a popular beverage in Hong Kong. Made of a mixture of three parts of coffee and seven parts of Hong Kong-style milk tea, it can be served hot or cold.

Nestea

Nestea is a Swiss brand of iced tea and pop beverages owned by Nestlé, manufactured by The Coca-Cola Company and distributed by Nestlé's beverage department in the United States and by Beverage Partners Worldwide (BPW), a joint venture between The Coca-Cola Company and Nestlé, in the rest of the world. It competes with Unilever/PepsiCo's Lipton Iced Tea and Fuze Tea. Nestea provides a variety of tea products, including liquid and powdered tea concentrates, refrigeratable teas, and ready-to-drink bottles dispensed by vendor or vending machine. The beverage comes in several flavors, depending on the country.

Tassimo

The Tassimo Hot Beverage System is a consumer single-serve coffee system that prepares one-cup servings of espresso, regular coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and various other coffee drinks, notably those including milk such as latte or cappuccino. However, in May, 2020, a letter from product support at Gevalia.com, the source for Tassimo products in the United States, indicates that all of their Tassimo Cappuccino, Latte and Milk Creamer products have been discontinued from Gevalia.com but chat support indicated that a creamer product is still in production and available on Amazon. The brand is owned by Jacobs Douwe Egberts.

The Narragansett Brewing Company is an American brewery founded in Cranston, Rhode Island in 1890. Founders included John H. Fehlberg, Augustus F. Borchandt, Herman G. Possner, George M. Gerhard, Constand A. Moeller, and Jacob Wirth.

Arnott's Biscuits Limited is Australia's largest producer of biscuits and the second-largest supplier of snack food. American private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR) bought Arnott's from the Campbell Soup Company in 2019.

Coffee jelly

Coffee jelly is a jelly dessert flavored with coffee and sugar. Although once common in British and American cookbooks, it is now most common in Japan, where it can be found in most restaurants and convenience stores. Coffee jelly can be made using instant mix or from scratch. It is served in restaurants and cafés.

Mazagran (drink)

Mazagran is a cold, sweetened coffee drink that originated in Algeria. Portuguese versions may use espresso, lemon, mint and rum, and Austrian versions are served with an ice cube and include rum. Coffee sauce is a culinary sauce that includes coffee in its preparation. It is sometimes prepared using instant coffee. Coffee sauce has been used in American cuisine since at least 1904. Coffee sauce may be sweet or savory.
