The B20 and B83 constitute bus routes between Broadway Junction and East New York, running primarily on Pennsylvania Avenue in Brooklyn, New York City. They are operated by the New York City Transit Authority, with the B20 being based out of the Fresh Pond Depot and the B83 being based out of the East New York Depot.
The B20 begins at the Forest Avenue station. The B20 then heads west to Fresh Pond Road, and then turns south on that road to Myrtle Avenue. It then heads southwest on Summerfield and Schaefer Streets (Decatur Street northbound), with the southbound route taking a detour at Wyckoff Avenue via Covert Street. After reaching Broadway, it turns east on Broadway until reaching Broadway Junction. It then heads east on Jamaica Avenue, later turning south on Pennsylvania Avenue until Wortman Avenue, where it turns east to serve the Linden Houses until turning north on Ashford Street, then east on Linden Boulevard. After reaching Eldert Lane, it turns south there, and right onto Stanley Avenue, and finally turning left on Postal Facility Road and running on it until reaching it southern terminus at the Brooklyn General Mail Facility.
On weekday afternoons, every other B20 trip only runs between Broadway Junction and Brooklyn General Mail Facility.
The B83 begins at Broadway Junction and shares the same route with the B20 until reaching New Lots Avenue. It runs east on New Lots Avenue until Van Siclen Avenue, then running south on it until Vandalia Avenue, which it travels west on to return to running on Pennsylvania Avenue. It runs onto the Belt Parkway and leaves the parkway at the next exit in either direction, and then turns left onto Erskine Street, and left again on Gateway Drive and running on it until reaching the Gateway Center Bus Terminal.
The B20 began service on November 30, 1931, by Brooklyn-Manhattan Transit.
In May 1936, service was extended along Pennsylvania Avenue to Linden Boulevard. [2]
It initially operated via Linden Boulevard between Pennsylvania Avenue and Eldert Lane until 1978. It was rerouted in 1978 from Linden Boulevard to serve the Boulevard and Linden Houses via Wortman Avenue between Pennsylvania Avenue and Ashford Street. The rest of route was unchanged.
The B83 began as a new route on February 27, 1966, on a six-month trial basis. [3] At the time of its inception, its northern terminus was Livonia Avenue and Pennsylvania Avenue, while the original southern terminus was Cozine Avenue and Schenck Avenue. On November 13, 1966, the route was extended five blocks from Schenck Avenue and Cozine Avenue to Ashford Street and Cozine Avenue to serve the Boulevard Houses development. [4] It was extended north to Broadway Junction at an unknown date and in 1978, it was rerouted from Pennsylvania Avenue to run along Van Siclen Avenue and into Spring Creek Towers. It was then extended to Gateway Mall via Pennsylvania Avenue and the Belt Parkway on November 18, 2007. [5] [6] On August 31, 2014, it was extended even further to the new bus terminal at Gateway Center North. [7]
On December 1, 2022, the MTA released their draft plan for the Brooklyn Bus Redesign. As part of the plan, B20 service north of Broadway Junction would be discontinued, with service on Broadway and service north of Broadway replaced by the B53 and B7 local bus routes, respectively. It would also be rerouted from Wortman Avenue to Stanley Avenue and become a "Rush" route, making limited stops on Pennsylvania Avenue. The B83 would become a "Local" route and run straight down Pennsylvania Avenue to Belt Parkway instead of deviating to Van Siclen Avenue. It would become the local service along Pennsylvania Avenue and have increased frequency to compensate for the loss of B20 local service along the corridor and would gain overnight service, which will terminate at Spring Creek Towers. Closely spaced stops along both routes would be eliminated. [8] [9] [10]
Until 2024, the B83 school trippers running from Spring Creek Community School to Broadway Junction were based out of the Flatbush Depot.
The J Nassau Street Local and Z Nassau Street Express are two rapid transit services in the B Division of the New York City Subway. Their route emblems, or "bullets", are colored brown since they use the BMT Nassau Street Line in Lower Manhattan.
The BMT Canarsie Line is a rapid transit line of the B Division of the New York City Subway system, named after its terminus in the Canarsie neighborhood of Brooklyn. It is served by the L train at all times, which is shown in medium gray on the New York City Subway map and on station signs.
The BMT Jamaica Line, also known as the Broadway - Brooklyn Line, is an elevated rapid transit line of the B Division of the New York City Subway in Brooklyn and Queens. It runs from the Williamsburg Bridge southeast over Broadway to East New York, Brooklyn, and then east over Fulton Street and Jamaica Avenue to Jamaica, Queens. In western Jamaica, the line goes into a tunnel, becoming the lower level of the Archer Avenue lines in central Jamaica. The J and Z trains serve the entire length of the Jamaica Line, and the M serves the line west of Myrtle Avenue.
The IND Fulton Street Line is a rapid transit line of the IND Division of the New York City Subway, running from the Cranberry Street Tunnel under the East River through central Brooklyn to a terminus in Ozone Park, Queens. The IND Rockaway Line branches from it just east of Rockaway Boulevard. The A train runs express during daytime hours and local at night on the underground portion of the line; it runs local on the elevated portion of the line at all times. The C train runs local on the underground portion of the line at all times except late nights.
The Liberty Avenue station is a local station on the IND Fulton Street Line of the New York City Subway, located at the intersection of Liberty and Pennsylvania Avenues in East New York, Brooklyn. It is served by the C train at all times except nights, when the A train takes over service.
The Myrtle–Wyckoff Avenues station is a New York City Subway station complex formed by the intersecting stations of the BMT Canarsie Line and the BMT Myrtle Avenue Line, served by the L and M trains at all times. It is located at Myrtle Avenue and Wyckoff Avenue in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn and the Ridgewood neighborhood of Queens. The complex is connected by a set of stairs and several elevators and escalators between the elevated and underground levels. The station was renovated completely from 2004 to 2008.
The Grand Street Line is a public transit line in Brooklyn and Queens, New York City, running mostly along the continuous Grand Street and Grand Avenue between Williamsburg, Brooklyn and Maspeth, Queens. It then continues down Queens Boulevard to the 63rd Drive–Rego Park station. Originally a streetcar line, it is now the Q59 bus route, operated by the New York City Transit Authority between Williamsburg and Rego Park, Queens.

The Sumner Avenue Line and New Lots Avenue Line were two streetcar lines in Brooklyn, New York City, running mainly along Marcus Garvey Boulevard, East 98th Street, and New Lots Avenue between northern Bedford–Stuyvesant and New Lots. Originally streetcar lines, the two lines were combined as a bus route in 1947. That bus route became the present B15 Marcus Garvey Boulevard / New Lots Avenue service, operated by MTA New York City Bus' East New York Depot in East New York. The B15 continues east from New Lots to John F. Kennedy International Airport in Queens.
The B13 is a bus route in the New York City borough of Brooklyn, which serves the corridor of Crescent Street, as well as Gates Avenue north of the Myrtle–Wyckoff Avenues station. Originally operated by Independent Buses, it is now operated by MTA Regional Bus Operations under the New York City Transit brand.

The Flatlands Avenue Line, consisting of the B84, is a public transit line in Brooklyn in New York City, running mostly on Flatlands Avenue right between East New York and Spring Creek. The route began operating in 2013, replicating the B83 route in East New York through Jerome Street and Berriman Street.
Jamaica Avenue is a major avenue in the New York City boroughs of Brooklyn and Queens, New York, in the United States. Jamaica Avenue's western end is at Fulton Street and Broadway, as a continuation of East New York Avenue, in Brooklyn's East New York neighborhood. Physically, East New York Avenue connects westbound to New York Avenue, where East New York Avenue changes names another time to Lincoln Road; Lincoln Road continues to Ocean Avenue in the west, where it ends. Its eastern end is at the city line in Bellerose, Queens, where it merges into NY 25 to serve the rest of Long Island.
Linden Boulevard is a boulevard in New York City and Nassau County. Its western end is at Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, where Linden Boulevard travels as an eastbound-only street to Caton Avenue, where it becomes a two-way street. The boulevard stretches through both Brooklyn and Queens – in addition to southwestern Nassau County. This boulevard, especially the area of Cambria Heights between Springfield Boulevard and the Nassau County line represents a smaller version of shopping centers located on Jamaica Avenue and Queens Boulevard.
Spring Creek, previously called Spring Creek Basin, is a neighborhood within the East New York section of Brooklyn in New York City. It roughly comprises the southern portions of East New York between Flatlands Avenue to the north, and Jamaica Bay and the Gateway National Recreation Area to the south, with the Brooklyn neighborhood of Canarsie to the west and the Queens neighborhood of Howard Beach to the east. It is named after Spring Creek, one of several creeks that formerly ran through the area and drained into Jamaica Bay.
Broadway is an avenue in the New York City borough of Brooklyn that extends from the East River in the neighborhood of Williamsburg in a southeasterly direction to East New York for a length of 4.32 miles (6.95 km). It was named for the Broadway in Manhattan. The East New York terminus is a complicated intersection with East New York Avenue, Fulton Street, Jamaica Avenue, and Alabama Avenue. The BMT Jamaica Line of the New York City Subway runs on elevated tracks over Broadway from the Williamsburg Bridge to East New York on its way to Queens. Broadway forms the boundary between the neighborhoods of Bushwick, which lies above Broadway to the northeast, and Bedford–Stuyvesant, which is to the southwest.
Pennsylvania Avenue is a major north–south street in the East New York neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City. It generally runs north to south, from the Jackie Robinson Parkway in Broadway Junction to the Belt Parkway in Starrett City.
Rockaway Boulevard is a major road in the New York City borough of Queens. Unlike the similarly named Rockaway Beach Boulevard and Rockaway Freeway, it serves mainland Queens and does not enter the Rockaways.
The Q72 bus route constitutes a public transit route along Junction Boulevard and 94th Street in Queens, New York City. It operates between the Rego Park and East Elmhurst neighborhoods of Queens, and extends into LaGuardia Airport at the north end of the borough. It is city-operated under the MTA Bus Company brand of MTA Regional Bus Operations.
