Ballston Quarter is one of the first major suburban shopping centers built in the Washington metropolitan area. It opened in 1951 as Parkington Shopping Center and was the nation's first shopping center built around a multi-story parking garage. [1] It is located at the intersection of Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard in the Ballston neighborhood of Arlington County, Virginia, two blocks from Ballston–MU station on the Washington Metro's Orange and Silver lines. It was remodeled as Ballston Common Mall in 1986 and again in 2019 as Ballston Quarter. [2]
The site of the mall was known as Ball's Crossroads, when Ball's Tavern was located at the site in the early 1800s. [3] Located at the intersection of Wilson Boulevard and Glebe Road, it became the site of Ballston Stadium in the 1930s, a football stadium used by multiple teams, [4] including the Washington Commanders, who practiced there in 1938. [5]
After World War II, with the growth of the suburbs, the stadium was demolished for the construction of Parkington Shopping Center, a $6.5 million development constructed by The Hecht Co. and named for the complex's cutting-edge four-story parking garage. [5] The center was anchored by a Hecht's department store that opened on November 2, 1951. [6] [7] A man was electrocuted during the construction of the store. [8] At its opening, the five story, 300,000-square-foot (28,000 m2) store was the largest suburban department store on the East Coast. [9] The store's façade included a massive three-story glass wall containing 87 10x14ft panels that were used to post community messages, becoming a local landmark. The mall was considered so futuristic that the United States Information Agency and the BBC jointly produced a half-hour documentary about it, titled "Report From America: Parkington Shopping Center." [5]
Over the years, the $15 million Parkington Shopping Center expanded to 30 stores including Giant Food, McCrory Stores, W. T. Grant, Brentano's Books, Casual Corner, and others. [10] [11] The mall was an enormous success, and had gross sales of over $223 million in 1959. In 1963, a 12-story office building was added. [12] In May 1974, JCPenney opened a 36,327-square-foot (3,374.9 m2) soft line merchandise and catalog store. [13]
By 1982, the 30-year-old Parkington Shopping Center was in need of a facelift. [14] Beginning that year, Arlington County embarked on a $100 million renovation project and expansion of the single-story outdoor shopping center to an enclosed, multi-story mall totaling 530,000 square feet (49,000 m2), in limited partnership with May Centers, a subsidiary of The May Department Stores Company, which had acquired Hecht's, the original developer. [15] The mall's new name, "Ballston Common", came from a contest among Arlington residents. [16] After some complications, the renovated and expanded Ballston Common opened on October 20, 1986. The expansion added a 120,000 sqft JCPenney anchor store and brought the mall from 1 to 4 stories of retail, with a 9-story office tower above. [12]
In the early 2000s, the mall became home to the MedStar Capitals Iceplex, the headquarters and practice facility for the National Hockey League's Washington Capitals, and the ComedySportz improvisational theatre organization. [17] The JCPenney anchor store closed in early 2000 [18] and was soon after remodeled as Hecht's Furniture Gallery. In late 2000, Ballston Tower, an adjoining 16-story office tower was completed, with a Regal Cinemas multiplex and retail on the lower levels. [19] In 2003, the triangular surface parking lot in front of Hecht's at the intersection of Glebe Road and Wilson Boulevard was redeveloped, with the construction of 4300 Wilson Boulevard, an 11-story office tower. [20] All Hecht's stores were rebranded as Macy's in 2006.
The owner of the mall started planning its redevelopment in 2013. [21] In September 2013, Forest City Washington purchased the Macy's Furniture Store (formerly JCPenney) anchor store building as part of that plan. [22]
On May 31, 2016, most businesses closed so the mall could be redeveloped. The mall returned partially to its roots, with about half of its roof removed, making it an outdoor mall again. The vacant Macy's Furniture anchor store on the mall's east side was demolished and replaced with a new 22-story, 406-unit apartment tower called Origin Ballston. [23] Ballston Quarter reopened officially in November 2018. [24] Currently, Regal Cinemas and a gym are the major anchors. [25]
Macy's closed in April 2024 [26] as part of a plan to close 5 stores nationwide, which left the mall without any traditional anchors. [27] The Macy's anchor store is set to be demolished in late 2024 for construction of a 500-unit apartment building. [26]
On September 14, 2019, the Arlington County Police Department was dispatched to the mall due to reports of a mass shooter. After the mall was searched, it was revealed that there was no shooter. It was suspected to be a prank, but it was later found out that someone misinterpreted the line "Pennywise has sharpshooter activated," while they were watching the movie It Chapter Two at the theatre. The report summoned a massive police presence with police helicopters from Washington, D.C. and neighboring Fairfax County. [28]
Tysons Corner Center is a shopping mall in the unincorporated area of Tysons in Fairfax County, Virginia, United States. It opened to the public in 1968, becoming one of the first fully enclosed, climate-controlled shopping malls in the Washington metropolitan area. The mall's anchor department stores are Macy's, Nordstrom, and Bloomingdale's. The mall also features prominent specialty retailers including Everlane, Fabletics, Untuckit, Oak + Fort, Intimissimi, Aesop, and Warby Parker.
Fashion Centre at Pentagon City, originally the Pentagon City Mall, is an enclosed regional shopping mall in the Pentagon City neighborhood of Arlington, Virginia, near Interstate 395 and Hayes Street. Its Metro level is directly connected to the Pentagon City station on the Blue and Yellow Lines of the Washington Metro. The mall features Macy's and Nordstrom, and also houses the Ritz-Carlton Pentagon City hotel.
Ballston–MU station is a side platformed Washington Metro station in the Ballston section of Arlington County, Virginia. The station opened on December 1, 1979, and is operated by the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA). The station is part of the Orange and Silver Lines and serves the transit-oriented community of Ballston, Ballston Quarter, and Marymount University (MU).
Ballston is a neighborhood in Arlington County, Virginia. Ballston is located at the western end of the Rosslyn-Ballston corridor. It is a major transportation hub and has one of the nation's highest concentrations of scientific research institutes and research and development agencies, including DARPA, the Office of Naval Research, the Advanced Research Institute of Virginia Tech, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and engineering, management, and public sector consulting firms. Ballston also includes a section known as Virginia Square and sometimes the area is collectively known as Ballston-Virginia Square.
Clarendon is an urbanized, developed neighborhood in Arlington County, Virginia, located between the Rosslyn area and the Ballston area. It was named after Edward Hyde, 1st Earl of Clarendon, a leading statesman and historian of the English Civil War. The main thoroughfares are Wilson Boulevard and Clarendon Boulevard.
Hecht's, also known as Hecht Brothers, Hecht Bros. and The Hecht Company, was a large chain of department stores that operated mainly in the mid-Atlantic and southern region of the United States. The firm originated in Baltimore, Maryland.
Hanes Mall is a shopping mall located off I-40 via the Stratford Road and Hanes Mall Boulevard exits, on Silas Creek Parkway. Hanes Mall Boulevard, the road named after the mall, has become a very high traffic count area with over 250 businesses stretching over 2.9 miles. The mall has 1,435,164 square feet (133,331 m2) GLA and has 3 anchor stores and over 170 tenants in all.
White Marsh Mall is a regional shopping mall in the unincorporated and planned community of White Marsh, Maryland. It is one of the largest regional malls in the Baltimore metropolitan area, with 6 anchor stores and 134 specialty shops in 1,200,000 square feet (110,000 m2). The mall is anchored by Macy's, Macy's Home Store, Boscov's, JCPenney and Dave & Buster's. White Marsh Mall is the fourth largest mall in the Baltimore area, behind Towson Town Center, Arundel Mills Mall and Annapolis Mall. It is adjacent to an IKEA store and The Avenue at White Marsh shopping center.
Dulles Town Center is a two-level enclosed shopping mall in Sterling in Loudoun County, Virginia. It is located five miles (8.0 km) north of Washington Dulles International Airport. It is part of the Dulles Town Center census-designated place for population statistical purposes.
Boulevard Mall was a shopping mall located north of the city of Buffalo at the western edge of the Town of Amherst in Erie County, New York, United States. The name derives from its location on Niagara Falls Boulevard, which divides Amherst from the Town of Tonawanda. Boulevard Mall features a gross leasable area of 904,000 square feet. The mall retains the traditional retailers Macy's, JCPenney, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Gabe's.
The Mall at Prince George's, formerly known as Prince George's Plaza, is an enclosed regional shopping mall located in Hyattsville, Maryland, at the intersection of Belcrest Road and East-West Highway. It is served by a Washington Metro station, Hyattsville Crossing. This station is on the Green Line. Located across Belcrest Road from the Mall is the University Town Center mixed-use development.
The Shops at Montebello is a shopping mall mainly located within the city limits of Montebello, California, with over 120 national and local retail outlets such as Aéropostale, Hollister, Victoria’s Secret and BJ's Restaurant & Brewery. A small portion of its eastern side is actually within the city limits of Rosemead. It features major department stores, children's stores, smaller shops such as beauty and bath stores, health stores and salons, as well as a small food court. The boundary line between Montebello and Rosemead runs through the eastern end of the mall. Policing is provided by the City of Montebello. It was managed by The Macerich Company before being sold to Simon Property Group in 2011. The mall features 758,504 sq ft of leasable retail space. As of 2019, Simon no longer owns the mall. Pacific Retail announced ownership of the mall on the company Instagram page on January 24, 2019. As of April 2024, the mall is currently managed by Spinoso Real Estate Group.
The Mall in Columbia, also known as the Columbia Mall, is the central shopping mall for the planned community of Columbia, Maryland, United States. It has over 200 specialty stores and the anchor stores are AMC Theatres, Lidl, Main Event Entertainment, Barnes & Noble, JCPenney, Macy's, and Nordstrom. Restaurants include PF Chang's, Maggiano's Little Italy and The Cheesecake Factory. It is located in the Town Center area of the city and attracts shoppers from surrounding counties in Maryland.
Christiana Mall is a shopping mall located in Christiana, Delaware between the cities of Newark and Wilmington. The one-level, enclosed super-regional mall is situated at the intersection of Interstate 95 and Delaware Route 1/Delaware Route 7 near the center of the Northeast megalopolis.
Rivergate Mall is a super-regional shopping mall located in Goodlettsville, Tennessee, United States, just outside of Nashville, the state capital of Tennessee. Opened in October 1971, the mall features 1,129,035 square feet (104,890.8 m2) of gross leasable area, with approximately 80 stores and restaurants, as well as a food court. Rivergate Mall has two anchor stores: Dillard's and JCPenney. There are two vacant anchor stores that were formerly Macy's and Sears. Its original anchor stores were Cain-Sloan, Castner Knott, and JCPenney. The mall sits in the core of a shopping district that is shared by the city of Goodlettsville and the Nashville neighborhood of Madison. This area is colloquially referred to by locals as "Rivergate," after the mall. Rivergate Mall is managed by Hendon Properties.
Laurel Mall was a shopping mall located on the west side of U.S. Route 1 in Laurel, Maryland. The mall opened on October 11, 1979 and connected two pre-existing structures – the freestanding Montgomery Ward on its south side and Laurel Shopping Center to the north. The mall closed permanently on May 1, 2012.
Security Square Mall is a mall in Woodlawn, Baltimore County, Maryland, a suburb of Baltimore, in the United States. The mall features over 100 stores and restaurants, as well as a food court. One section of the mall, Grand Village Plaza, previously included Korean shops and restaurants; however, most of these establishments had closed by 2010. Security Square Mall is located adjacent to the North American School of Trades. The anchor stores are Bayit Furniture, Set the Captives Free Outreach Center, Burlington, and Macy's. There is one vacant anchor store that once housed Sears.
Westfield Wheaton, formerly known as Wheaton Plaza, is a 1.7 million square-foot, two-level indoor shopping mall in Wheaton, Maryland, north of Washington, D.C. It is owned by Unibail-Rodamco-Westfield and Its anchor stores include Macy’s, Target, JCPenney, Dick's Sporting Goods, and Costco.
Pembroke Lakes Mall, often referred to as Pines Mall or Pembroke Lakes, is an enclosed shopping mall located in Pembroke Pines, Florida, a suburb of Miami and Fort Lauderdale. Located on the intersection of State Road 820 and State Road 823, it is in between Interstate 75 and Florida's Turnpike. Owned and managed by Brookfield Properties, the mall was opened in 1992, and has 1,135,374 square feet (105,479.7 m2) on one floor. As of 2018, Pembroke Lakes is one of South Florida's most popular malls. The anchor stores are Round One Entertainment, AMC Theatres, 2 Dillard's stores, JCPenney, and 2 Macy's stores.
Regency Mall is an enclosed shopping mall outside of Richmond, Virginia in unincorporated Henrico County, Virginia, United States. Opened in 1975 as Regency Square, the mall features a food court and more than 60 tenants, currently with no anchors. Macy's, which had two locations at Regency Square, closed in spring 2016, Sears closed in summer 2017, and JCPenney closed in fall 2020. Forever 21 closed in early 2020 as part of that brand's restructuring plan.
