Grenadiers or rattails are generally large, brown to black gadiform marine fish of the subfamily Macrourinae, the largest subfamily of the family Macrouridae. Found at great depths from the Arctic to Antarctic, members of this subfamily are amongst the most abundant of the deep-sea fish.
Charles Tate Regan FRS was a British ichthyologist, working mainly around the beginning of the 20th century. He did extensive work on fish classification schemes.
Lanternfish are small mesopelagic fish of the large family Myctophidae. One of two families in the order Myctophiformes, the Myctophidae are represented by 246 species in 33 genera, and are found in oceans worldwide. Lanternfishes are aptly named after their conspicuous use of bioluminescence. Their sister family, the Neoscopelidae, are much fewer in number but superficially very similar; at least one neoscopelid shares the common name "lanternfish": the large-scaled lantern fish, Neoscopelus macrolepidotus.
Symbolophorus is a genus of lanternfishes. It feeds on various small forms of sea life, in particular fish. Some species in this genus are known to exhibit the Stylophthalmine trait in their larval form
Protomyctophum is a genus of lanternfishes.
Lampanyctus is a genus of lanternfishes.
Ceratoscopelus is a genus of lanternfish.
Gymnoscopelus is a genus of lanternfishes. The name is from the Greek gymnos, "naked" and skopelos, "lanternfish."
Diaphus is a genus of lanternfishes. It is the most species-rich lanternfish genus.
Myctophum is a genus of lanternfishes, some species of which, such as M. punctatum are noted for having the Stylophthalmine trait in their larval form.
Hygophum is a genus of lanternfishes.
Lampadena is a genus of lanternfishes.
Nannobrachium is a genus of lanternfishes.
Stenobrachius is a genus of lanternfishes.
Tarletonbeania is a genus of lanternfishes found in the Pacific Ocean.
Scopelogadus is a genus of ridgeheads. The generic name derives from the Greek σκόπελος and γάδος.
Tarletonbeania crenularis is a species of lanternfish. The first member of this species was retrieved by Dr. Tarleton H. Bean off of Vancouver Island in 1880, which is where the genus name originates from. The species name comes from the Latin word for a small notch (crenula), and this refers to the slight notch seen at the edges of the scales.
The headlight fish is a species of lanternfish in the family Myctophidae. It is also sometimes referred to as the headlight lanternfish, or even the lanternfish, though it is not the only species to be called this.
Benthosema pterotum, also known as the skinnycheek lanternfish and opaline lanternfish, is a species of fish in the family Myctophidae. It is found in the Indian Ocean and western Pacific Ocean. It is dominant species in the mesopelagic of the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden. It is a minor fishery species.
Benthosema suborbitale is a species of fish in the family Myctophidae.
