Better is the tenth Korean-language studio album (twentieth overall) by South Korean singer BoA. It was released on December 1,2020,by SM Entertainment,to commemorate her twentieth anniversary. [1] The album features 11 tracks,with the title song serving as the album's lead single. [2] It was met with praise from music critics upon its release.
On November 5,2020,SM Entertainment announced that BoA will come back with her tenth Korean studio album titled Better,two years after the release of her ninth album Woman (2018). The album release marks the singer's twentieth anniversary since her debut in 2000. [3] Preorders began the same day. [4] A music video teaser for the lead single "Better" was released on November 30. [5] The album was released on December 1,2020,by SM Entertainment,through various music portals. [6] The accompanying music video for "Better" was released in conjunction with the album's release. [7]
I still can't believe that 20 years have passed since my debut, [...] it feels like people around me are giving more meaning to this than I am. Gearing up for Better, I tried to keep myself more lighthearted because I was afraid I might not be able to drop it now if I also put a lot of meaning into it and made it too weighty.
"Better" is an alternative R&B written and arranged by longtime collaborator Yoo Young-jin. Alongside music production by Yoo, Aston Rudi, and Jay-Keyz, the song also contains a sample of "Like I Do" by Swedish singer AWA, who was given songwriting credits for the song. [8] A Mandarin version of the song was released in 2022, alongside singer Xin Liu. [9]
The physical album was made available for purchase on December 2, 2020, and has two editions: regular and limited. [10] The limited version was made available in two "special" editions: yellow and beige. [11] [12] [13] A few hours after the album's release, BoA held an online live show titled "Better BoA" which was broadcast through Naver's V Live channel, where she introduced songs from the album. Better received critical acclaim from critics upon release, with several publications listing Better in their rankings of best albums of 2020. It was ranked at number six on Metro UK's list The 20 Best K-Pop comebacks of 2020 and at number one on Billboard 's list of The 10 Best K-pop Albums of 2020. The latter publication described the album as "one of her strongest records to date, and it's filled to the brim with songs that present her as someone assured in her artistry – its excellence is obvious." [14] Rolling Stone (India) included it in their list of the 10 best K-pop albums of 2020. [15]
South China Morning Post named it one of the best K-pop solo albums of 2020 [16] while QQ Music ranked it number 16 on their list of the 100 best K-pop songs of the year. [17] "Start Over" was named the number one Best K-pop B-side of 2020 by MTV, which explained that "BoA's tangy, raspy-edged timbre is a compelling match for the song's pleading urgency and breathless declarations of "You're gonna love me, let me start over." Kwon Bo-ah, known professionally as BoA, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, dancer, producer and actress. One of the most successful and influential Korean entertainers, she is widely known as the "Queen of K-pop".
Choi Sung-hee, known professionally as Bada, is a South Korean singer-songwriter, composer, musical actress and television presenter. She debuted as a member of the South Korean girl group S.E.S. in 1997. After S.E.S. disbanded in December 2002, she released her first solo studio album, A Day of Renew, in October 2003. Since then, she continued her active singing career with songs such as Aurora, Eyes, V.I.P, GoGoGo, Queen, and Mad.
Atlantis Princess is the third Korean studio album by South Korean recording artist BoA, released on May 30, 2003 by SM Entertainment. The record spawned several singles, including the promotional single "Lights of Seoul", the title track "Atlantis Princess", and "Milky Way", with accompanying music videos produced for the latter two songs. An overseas version of the album, containing a bonus video CD, was released in several territories in Asia such as the Philippines, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
My Name is the fourth Korean-language studio album by South Korean singer BoA, released by SM Entertainment on June 11, 2004. Girls on Top is the fifth Korean studio album by South Korean recording artist BoA, released through SM Entertainment on June 23, 2005. A repackage of the album, titled Moto, was released on August 17, 2005. The record saw a continuation of BoA's image change that began with her prior album My Name (2004); Girls on Top sought to portray a "mature and self-confident" image with themes expressing female empowerment. In Japan, a special edition of the album including a DVD was released by Avex Trax on March 26, 2008.
"Every Heart " is a song recorded by South Korea singer BoA. It was released as her fifth single under Avex Trax on March 13, 2002, the same day as her Japanese debut album Listen to My Heart. It featured on the hit anime, Inuyasha, as the fourth and the second (Korean) ending theme song.
"Valenti" is a song by South Korean singer BoA, for her second Japanese studio album of the same name (2003). It was released by Avex Trax as her sixth Japanese single on August 28, 2002, and features "Realize " as a B-side. "Meri Kuri", known in South Korea as "Merry-Chri", is a song recorded in two languages by South Korean singer BoA. A holiday-themed ballad, its lyrics were written by Chinfa Kan and BoA; production was handled by Kazuhiro Hara. It was released on December 1, 2004, as her 14th Japanese single, via Avex Trax; and her 3rd physical Korean single, by SM Entertainment. Both versions are supported with the B-side tracks "Mega Step" and "The Christmas Song". Its music video premiered on her 18th birthday and was shot at the Chapel on the Water and Ochiai Station in Hokkaidō.
"No. 1" is a song recorded by South Korean recording artist BoA. It was released on April 12, 2002, for her second studio album of the same name (2002) through SM Entertainment. In Japan, the song was released as a double A-side CD single with the track "Kiseki" on September 19, 2002, via Avex Trax. The single, titled "Kiseki / No. 1", was included in her second Japanese studio album Valenti (2003). "No. 1" was written by Kim Young-ah, while production was handled by Sigurd Røsnes and Ahn Ik-soo.
Hurricane Venus is the sixth Korean language studio album by South Korean singer BoA, released on August 2, 2010, by SM Entertainment, to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the singer's career. It is BoA's first major Korean-language release since the repackage version of Girls on Top in 2005, and subsequently her second major release in a year following her seventh Japanese album Identity in February 2010.
S.E.S. was a South Korean girl group formed in 1997 by SM Entertainment, featuring three members: Bada, Eugene, and Shoo. Their debut album I'm Your Girl sold 650,000 copies, becoming the third best-selling album by a female group in South Korea. Their follow-up albums, Sea & Eugene & Shoo in 1998, Love in 1999 and A Letter from Greenland in 2000 also became best-sellers.
Kiss My Lips is the eighth Korean-language studio album by South Korean singer BoA. It was released digitally on May 12, 2015, and physically a day later by SM Entertainment, and distributed by KT Music. The album features twelve tracks in total, including two singles; "Who Are You" and the title track. The self-produced record is her first Korean full-length release since Only One (2012).
Awaken the World is the first studio album by Chinese boy band WayV. It was released digitally on June 9, 2020, and physically on June 18, 2020, by Label V and SM Entertainment, with Dreamus as the South Korean distributor and Owhat as the distributor for China. A full-length release which consists of ten songs that fall mostly in the hip-hop and R&B genres with influences from synth-pop, Awaken the World saw the participation of various songwriters and production teams that have worked with SM previously, namely Moonshine, Tay Jasper, Adrian McKinnon, Mike Daley, Mitchell Owens, Deez, Dsign Music, Cazzi Opeia, Ryan S. Jhun, Vedo, LDN Noise, MZMC, and others. Members Hendery and Yangyang also participated in lyric writing for some of the album tracks.
"Masayume Chasing" is the 37th Japanese single by South Korean singer, songwriter, and dancer BoA. It was released on July 23, 2014, as one of the several singles for her eighth Japanese-language studio album, Who's Back? (2014) through Avex Trax. The CD single contains the B-side track "Fun", and was released in six physical editions: two CD+DVD editions, a CD-only edition, a CD-only Fairy Tail edition, and two limited USB editions only sold on BoA's official fan club shop.
Forgive Me is the third extended play by South Korean singer BoA. It was released by SM Entertainment on November 22, 2022, and contains six tracks, including the lead single of the same name.
