BoA is the only English studio album (twelfth overall) by South Korean recording artist BoA. The album was released on March 17,2009,in the United States through SM Entertainment. BoA was released in Japan through Avex Trax the following day and was boxed with her second greatest hits album, Best &USA ,as a 2-in-1 CD. [1] The record was originally titled Look Who's Talking,and was recorded at studios across the United States,Australia,and Thailand.
Commercially,BoA became the first album by a South Korean artist to appear on the US Billboard 200,peaking at number 127. It also peaked at number 3 on the US Top Heatseekers and number 5 on the US Dance/Electronic Albums chart. On August 31,2009,BoA:Deluxe was released digitally via iTunes and included the single version of "Energetic" and two bonus songs:"Crazy About" and "Control". On September 22,2009,the album was released worldwide. [2]
In January 2008,it was reported that BoA was planning to enter the US market. [3] However,Lee Soo Man,the head of BoA's label SM Entertainment,denied this,saying there was still more work to do in Asia. [4] On August 29,2008,SM Entertainment announced it had started a subsidiary label in the U.S.,SM Entertainment USA. News reports started to surface once again about BoA breaking into the U.S. market. [5] [6] On September 2,2008,BoA's label officially announced that she would be entering the US market under their subsidiary label. [7] On September 10,a press conference was held at the Seoul Imperial Palace Hotel to further clarify her plans. [7] With the album,BoA hoped to become a "world-renowned entertainer" in the vein of Janet Jackson. [8]
For the album,BoA worked with well-known music producers such as Bloodshy &Avant,Brian Kennedy and Sean Garrett. [9] The recording of the album took place in Thailand,Australia,Atlanta and Los Angeles. [10] On Space Shower Music Update during her interview,BoA said that the album consisted of upbeat songs and the use of a vocoder. [11] The album was originally titled Look Who's Talking. [12]
During her press conference,SM Entertainment announced "Eat You Up" was chosen to be the lead single from the album. [13] The track was produced by Henrik Jonback (who worked with artists such as Britney Spears and Madonna). "Eat You Up" was released online on October 21,2008. The single charted on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart peaking at the number 8 spot. [14] "Look Who's Talking" was first performed at MTV World Presents:BoA Live in New York on December 3,2008. [15] BoA also performed the single at the 2008 Jingle Ball,which was held at the Anaheim Honda Center. [16]
"I Did It for Love" was the second official single from the album. A 1:30 snippet of the song was released online on February 17,2009,on various websites. [9] The track was written and produced by Sean Garrett,who is featured on the single. The single charted on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart peaking at the number 18 spot. On May 30,before their performance at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards Japan,BoA and Sean Garrett confirmed in an interview [17] that "Energetic" would be the new single. It is another track written and produced by Sean Garrett,therefore continuing their partnership. According to Kenny Wormald,one of BoA's backup dancers,the music video for Energetic was shot between June 3 and 5,2009. [18] The music video was released online on July 21,2009,through EW.com. The single charted on the Billboard Hot Dance Club Play chart at number 17. [2]
In order to promote the album,BoA performed at the YouTube Live Tokyo event in November. [15] A taping was held on December 3,2008,at the MTV studio in Times Square of a live performance titled MTV World Presents:BoA Live in New York. She performed "Eat You Up","Look Who's Talking" and the title song of her fifth Korean studio album, Girls on Top . [15] BoA also performed at the 2008 Jingle Ball,as an opening act. [19] She also promoted in South Korea at the 2008 SBS Gayo Daejun. [20] BoA herself told EW.com that she has a "repackaged album [to be] released in September",with the new songs "Control" produced by Brian Kennedy and "Crazy About",produced by Sean Garrett. [2]

Kwon Bo-ah, known professionally as BoA, is a South Korean singer, songwriter, dancer, producer and actress. She is often referred to as the "Queen of K-pop".
Garrett Robin Hamler, known professionally as Sean Garrett, is an American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. He is known his songwriting work on a series of commercially successful R&B and hip hop songs, beginning with Usher's 2004 single "Yeah!". Peaking atop the Billboard Hot 100, Garrett co-wrote five other songs which did so—"Goodies" for Ciara that same year; "Check on It" for Beyoncé, "Run It!" for Chris Brown in 2005; "London Bridge" for Fergie, "Grillz" for Nelly in 2006—as well as 17 other singles that peaked atop the UK Singles, US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs, or Dance Club Songs charts. Throughout his career, Garrett has been nominated for four Grammy Awards.
Kamaljit Singh Jhooti, better known by the stage name Jay Sean, is a British singer and songwriter. He debuted in the UK's Asian Underground scene as a member of the Rishi Rich Project with "Dance with You", which reached No. 12 on the UK Singles Chart in 2003. This led to him being signed to Virgin Records and having two UK top 10 hits as a solo artist in 2004: "Eyes on You" at No. 6 and "Stolen" at No. 4. They were included in his critically acclaimed debut album Me Against Myself which, though only moderately successful in the UK, sold more than two million copies across Asia and remains his most successful album to date. Alongside the Rishi Rich Project, Sean was a pioneer of Bhangra-R&B fusion, which his debut album helped popularize among the worldwide South Asian diaspora.
TVXQ, known as Tohoshinki in Japan, is a South Korean pop duo formed by SM Entertainment, composed of U-Know Yunho and Max Changmin.
Super Junior , also known as SJ or SuJu, is a South Korean boy band. The group is composed of Leeteuk, Heechul, Yesung, Shindong, Sungmin, Eunhyuk, Siwon, Donghae, Ryeowook, and Kyuhyun. Han Geng, Kibum, and Kangin were originally part of the group before departing in 2011, 2015 and 2019, respectively. The group was formed by the founder of SM Entertainment, Lee Soo-man in 2005 as a 12-piece group with rotational members but the concept was abandoned after addition of Kyuhyun in 2006. They are also dubbed by the media as the "King of Hallyu Wave" due to their contributions in Korean Wave.
"Valenti" is a song by South Korean singer BoA. It was released for her second Japanese studio album of the same name (2003) on August 28, 2002, serving as her sixth Japanese single under Avex Trax. It features "Realize " as a B-side. A Korean version of "Valenti" was released as part of her compilation album Miracle, which was made available by SM Entertainment on September 24, 2002.
"Like This" is a song by American singer Kelly Rowland, featuring vocals by rapper Eve. Recorded late into the production of Rowland's second solo album Ms. Kelly (2007), the song was released on March 13, 2007, as the lead single from the album. The artists co-wrote the song with its producers Sean Garrett, Polow da Don, Blac Elvis, and Jason Perry, with additional production from S-Dot. "Like This" is a R&B song, with its lyrics referring to a woman growing out of a past relationship.
Wonder Girls (Korean: 원더걸스) was a South Korean girl group formed by JYP Entertainment. The group debuted in February 2007 with the single "Irony" and 5 members: Yeeun, Sunye, Sunmi, Hyuna, and Sohee. After Hyuna's departure in July, Yubin was added into the group prior to the release of their debut studio album, The Wonder Years (2007). The album spawned the hit single "Tell Me", which topped various South Korean music charts.
Girls' Generation, also known as SNSD, is a South Korean girl group formed by SM Entertainment. The group is composed of eight members: Taeyeon, Sunny, Tiffany, Hyoyeon, Yuri, Sooyoung, Yoona, and Seohyun. Originally a nine-piece ensemble, member Jessica departed from the group in September 2014. Among the most known South Korean figures and successful K-pop groups worldwide, Girls' Generation has earned numerous accolades and the honorific nickname "The Nation's Girl Group" in their home country.
"Whatever U Like" is the debut solo single by American singer Nicole Scherzinger, featuring rapper T.I. and Sean Garrett. Far East Movement is an American hip hop and electronic music group based in Los Angeles, composed of Kev Nish, Prohgress, J-Splif, Jon Street, Ray Ro, DJ Virman, and Jerm Beats. They signed with Martin Kierszenbaum's Cherrytree Records, an imprint of Interscope Records to release their 2010 single, "Like a G6" which peaked the Billboard Hot 100, making them the first Asian American group to reach number one on the chart. Their follow up single, "Rocketeer", peaked at number seven and led their third album and major label debut, Free Wired (2010). It performed moderately on the Billboard 200, while their fourth album, Dirty Bass (2012) saw a steep commercial decline, although its lead single, "Live My Life" reached number 24 on the Billboard Hot 100.

The track was written by B.o.B, Mars, Philip Lawrence, and Ari Levine, with the latter three producing it as the Smeezingtons. She debuted as a member of the girl group Girls' Generation in August 2007, which went on to become one of the best-selling artists in South Korea and one of the most widely known K-pop groups worldwide.
