Brian Francis (born September 28,1957) is a Mi'kmaq leader,Chief of the Abegweit First Nation from 2007 to 2018. On 11 October 2018 he was appointed to the Senate of Canada representing Prince Edward Island. [2] He is the first Mi'kmaq from Prince Edward Island appointed to the Senate.
Prior to becoming chief,he was an Aboriginal programs co-ordinator with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. [2]

The Acadians are an ethnic group descended from the French who settled in the New France colony of Acadia during the 17th and 18th centuries. Most Acadians live in the region of Acadia,as it is the region where the descendants of a few Acadians who escaped the Expulsion of the Acadians re-settled. Most Acadians in Canada continue to live in majority French-speaking communities,notably those in New Brunswick where Acadians and Francophones are granted autonomy in areas such as education and health.
Citadel Hill is a hill that is a National Historic Site in Halifax,Nova Scotia,Canada. Four fortifications have been constructed on Citadel Hill since the city was founded by the English in 1749,and were referred to as Fort George—but only the third fort was officially named Fort George. According to General Orders of October 20,1798,it was named after King George III. The first two and the fourth and current fort,were officially called the Halifax Citadel. The last is a concrete star fort.

Abegweit First Nation is a First Nations government originally known as the Lennox First Nation that is located on Prince Edward Island,Canada. The Abegweit First Nation is headquartered at Scotchfort,known as Skaqmk. This is the location of a historic Míkmaq portage route connecting Mimtugaak to Kadotpichk. This First Nation comprises three reserves:Morell 2,Rocky Point 3 and Scotchfort 4.
Edward Cornwallis was a British career military officer and was a member of the aristocratic Cornwallis family,who reached the rank of Lieutenant General. After Cornwallis fought in Scotland,putting down the Jacobite rebellion of 1745,he was appointed Groom of the Chamber for King George II. He was then made Governor of Nova Scotia (1749–1752),one of the colonies in North America,and assigned to establish the new town of Halifax,Nova Scotia. Later Cornwallis returned to London,where he was elected as MP for Westminster and married the niece of Robert Walpole,Great Britain's first Prime Minister. Cornwallis was next appointed as Governor of Gibraltar.

Lennox Island is a Mi'kmaq First Nations band government in the Canadian province of Prince Edward Island. Its only currently inhabited reserve is Lennox Island 1,on Lennox Island,purchased by the Aborigines' Protection Society on behalf of the Mi'kmaq of Prince Edward Island in 1870 or 1878. The population on reserve is approximately 450. In 2005 the population was 320 on reserve and 720 off reserve,with 60% of the population being younger than 35. The 2016 census counted 323 residents on reserve. The band has two other reserves,Lennox Island 5,located in East Bideford,and Lennox Island 6,located in Fernwood,both acquired in the 2000s.
Lennox Island is an island located in Malpeque Bay off the northwest coast of Prince Edward Island,Canada. Connected by a short causeway and bridge,Lennox Island is home to the Lennox Island First Nation,of the Mi'kmaq people. The Mi'kmaq name for the island is L'nui Minegoo,and it has been informally known by European settlers as Indian Island.
The history of Prince Edward Island covers several historical periods,from the pre-Columbian era to the present day. Prior to the arrival of Europeans,the island formed a part of Mi'kma'ki,the lands of the Mi'kmaq people. The island was first explored by Europeans in the 16th century. The French later laid claim over the entire Maritimes region,including Prince Edward Island in 1604. However,the French did not attempt to settle the island until 1720,with the establishment of the colony of Île Saint-Jean. After peninsular Acadia was captured by the British in 1710,an influx of Acadian migrants moved to areas still under French control,including Île Saint-Jean.

The Battle at Port-la-Joye was a battle in King George's War that took place with British against French troops and Mi'kmaq militia on the banks of present-day Hillsborough River,Prince Edward Island in the summer of 1746. French officer Jean-Baptiste Nicolas Roch de Ramezay sent French and Mi'kmaq forces to Port-la-Joye where they surprised and defeated a force of 200 Massachusetts militia in two British naval vessels that were gathering provisions for recently captured Louisbourg.
Nova Scotia is a Canadian province located in Canada's Maritimes. The region was initially occupied by Mi'kmaq. The colonial history of Nova Scotia includes the present-day Maritime Provinces and the northern part of Maine,all of which were at one time part of Nova Scotia. In 1763,Cape Breton Island and St. John's Island became part of Nova Scotia. In 1769,St. John's Island became a separate colony. Nova Scotia included present-day New Brunswick until that province was established in 1784. During the first 150 years of European settlement,the colony was primarily made up of Catholic Acadians,Maliseet,and Mi'kmaq. During the last 75 years of this time period,there were six colonial wars that took place in Nova Scotia. After agreeing to several peace treaties,the long period of warfare ended with the Halifax Treaties (1761) and two years later,when the British defeated the French in North America (1763). During those wars,the Acadians,Mi'kmaq and Maliseet from the region fought to protect the border of Acadia from New England. They fought the war on two fronts:the southern border of Acadia,which New France defined as the Kennebec River in southern Maine,and in Nova Scotia,which involved preventing New Englanders from taking the capital of Acadia,Port Royal and establishing themselves at Canso.
The Qalipu First Nation,is a Mi’kmaq band government,created by order-in-council in 2011 pursuant to the Agreement for the Recognition of the Qalipu Mi’kmaq Band. After the band was approved as a First Nation,100,000 people applied for membership and a total of 23,000 were approved.
